Title: It makes such little sense....
Post by: jt92 on April 01, 2014, 01:00:15 PM
What bothers me most about the last ten days is that regardless of who said it, we did need to make an "impact hire." This was not an impact hire.  Wojo has a familiar name to those of us who follow cbball but he is an unproven assistant from an institution that has produced a number of "average at best" head coaches from their asst. coach ranks.  I was very critical of Cuonzo Martin because he just didn't seem to have the level of success or potential level of success to build upon what the last 12 years has produced at MU.  He wasn't/isn't a good recruiter.  With Crean we heard he was a good recruiter and we also heard that with Buzz as well, and for the most part they were.  But lets not forget that the Big East was the best conference in basketball and was a huge tool in recruiting.  We don't have that tool anymore.  Plus, we all know that Coach K could walk into any high school gym in the country and pick whoever he wants without the help of an assistant like wojo.

I think it was Bill Cords who stated that Marquette is a "destination" job.  The hiring of Wojo flies in the face of that.  If he were to have any success here he will be mentioned at Coach K's successor.  If I'm a coach recruiting against him I am making that point loud and clear that he is not committed to MU and as soon as the next opportunity comes he is gone.   Buzz and Crean's coyness about their futures had to of hurt us in recruiting.

We need(ed) a coach who would have made an impact, who had a track record and who wanted to coach here. Apparently the administration and some big donor who has to flex his muscle all the time didn't see it that way.  I will continue to root for MU and hope coach does well, but with all the money they are saving I will simply not donate to the school this year.  I'll leave that to the big donors since they seem to have all the influence.

There was no one who met every one of your criteria who wanted to come.    Fact.   Wojo won the interview.   He gets to coach.   If his coaching matches up with the vision he is reported to have shown in the interview, then, yes, he will leave MU one day.   But only after sustaining and building on the success of Buzz and Crean.

We can't get an impact hire existing coach.  It is what it is.

Wojo is an impact hire from the media point of view.  He might be one from a coaching perspective, we'll find out.  But it seems clear to me that MU will be flirted with by some good existing coaches, but they are never coming.  Good mid major coaches will come potentially.

Make the most of it.  Welcome to MU Wojo

I don't need to post anymore today. Pretty much on board with all of yours so far.

Chicos - based on today's press conference, do you think it's safe to assume Wojo has been offered jobs previously? If so, it makes me kind of wonder if Northwestern hired Collins purely for the PR generated by his family name and illinois HS career. I mean, why didn't they hire Wojo? That'd be my question.

I'm with Chicos.

Howland was a retread with a decent postseason history but a checkered past with UCLA's program.
Cuonzo is still not proven.
Wojo, despite not having as much experience as Cuonzo or Howland, hails from a successful D1 program (much like Crean did with MSU) and has the youth and energy to take MU to the next level.

Of course, Wojo being here for the long haul is of serious concern due to the impending retirement of Coach K in 5 years, but give the boy the support and chance to make his mark. I'm positive he'll give it his all. I just hope he understands Marquette basketball can be a home for him and not a stepping stool.

Perfectly stated JT92.....they really botched the entire hiring process which culminated with the wrong coach getting the job.....I wish Wojo the best but MU took a huge step back this year with the obviously weakened new conference, Buzz intentionally blowing the season, Buzz leaving and then an embarrassing search process where leaks destroy the process of getting and "A" lister only to end up with a kiss your sister pick.

I'm having a beer at 10,000 feet right now.  Going out to ski again in about 20 min.  Haven't seen the presser but after I do I can answer your question.
