I always liked watching Al McGuire's teams at Marquette. I even remember watching the 1977 NCAA Championship game. Granted, I was only 7 months old at the time....

Hahaha! So true
Wake up people, this is April Fools Day!!! We all know how this is going to turn out. Cords calls a press conference and introduces "the next Head Coach of Marquette University - Steve Wojciechowski". Crowd goes wild. Loud applause. Wojo takes the podium. Then....dramatic pause and stunned gasp from the audience as "WoJo" slowly peels off fake-skin facemask to reveal....SHAKA SMART!!!
Cords rips open his shirt to reveal the words "DONE DEAL!"
Yawn! We've all seen it before, people. Don't be fooled again.

Why is Ferraro there? He ran the President not this search, right?

I love how Steve and Juan just clap on cue. Whether they understand the reference to Polish food or not.
I really hope he mentions the Big East and TV deal. Totally flies in the face of what Brent said

Well I asked Coach K if he would be my associate head coach, lol
Had Collins not taken the Northwestern job last year, would he be standing at the podium today?
Coach K talked us up... I remember when head coaches talked assistants out of taking the MU job.
Tip of my hat to Coach K.
I hope our recruits give this guy a chance. Can't believe any of them were that sold on playing for the [phony who deserted us.
Yea, a lot of good battles with Duke in the last 10 years. I think we are W 1, L2. Which isn't that bad against Duke.

I like the guy, he seems genuine, family guy, I believe him when he talks. Comes from a great program where that's what he knows. MU's giving him tools to go out and be successful.
Maybe I'm drinking the kool aid too much right now, but I'm pumped for the Wojo era.
I want someone to ask "Do you see this as a stepping stone job?" or "Do you think you'll return to Duke if offered the job when Coach K leaves?"
FUN FACT: This marks only the third press conference since March of 2012 where an MU head coach did not use the words "butcher" or "candlestick".
Wojo sounds like Woody Harrelson's character in True Detective

For the First press conference as a head coach, he did well. I expect more of his personality to show up in future press conferences, when he gets comfortable. 24 hours ago, he didn't know he'd be doing this press conference and this is a huge crossroads for him and his family. His decision just changed their futures. Hopefully he can take Mayo's surplus of energy and use it on the defensive end.

1) Loved that the new President mentioned Wojo as a recruiter with #1 class.
2) Having the team behind him was fantastic, was the entire squad there?
3) Eloquent speaker, humble, and family man
4) Fast attacking style of play in which players like. Nice.......
5) Head over heels than Buzz in public speaking, no life quality bs
6) I think he wins over Hill and Cohen to stay.

At some point, I think it probably was genuine, or at least mostly genuine. But as time wore on he became a bit of a caricature. The funny thing is, behind the scenes that whole Rainman thing supposedly bothered him ... and yet he continued to play to that persona in public.

I have to say I noticed this as well. Come on people, don't sell him out now because he left. I loved his schtick then and I'd love it now (if he still here). His tourney PC's were some of the greatest PC's I've ever seen, and I'll always appreciate what he accomplshed at MU. He brought some memorable players to Milwaukee too. Some that we probably otherwise wouldn't have seen wear the Marquette uni; Butler, Crowder, DJO, Ox, etc. I'll always appreciate what he did

I always liked Buzz because of all those Ws and Buzz's Bunch. But I never had any idea what point he was trying to make whenever I heard him talk. It's like each sentence would start with one thought and his mind was working so fast that he'd veer off to another thought in the same sentence without completing the first thought.

Man, everyone here sure changed quickly. Just two weeks ago we all loved Buzz' "genuine-ness" and "honesty" and "story". Now, he's just some backroom bum that never did nuttin around here. Please.
Didn't see the presser, but sounds/reads like he said the right things which is nice. Will try and find it online.
Put away the torches and pitchforks, it's time for a group hug!
Buzz' facade crumbled this year. His genius was proved to be a fluke.
I always thought Buzz acted like a complete MORON on the sideline. Sometimes it was embarassing to be a fan of MU and watching the guy going wild. His press conferences were idiotic.

I still admire and respect everything Buzz did for the basketball program at MU. IMO, the most creative coach, and statistically, the best coach at MU since Al. This last year was frustrating, to be sure, but the previous 5 were a blast. One day, I hope an independent source pens the story of the break up. I would love to get a clear, unbiased, complete account. I am skeptical it will happen, but one can hope.
So what are we paying this guy?

I agree. Everyone acts like Buzz was terrible.
Guy was one of the best coaches we had since Al.

I can't speak for others, but I agree--he's a good coach. But that's Buzz.
We're talking about Brent. Brent is a phony. He is a used carsalesman with a worn-out shtick. Brent is all about relationships. Networking. Brent looks out for two people: Brent and future Brent.

We know you are a slurper. Is your boy still Buzz or do you prefer Wojo?
BTW, how do you feel now about your stud Buzz with the stuff coming out now about Steve Taylor, JJJ and Du. Wilson? Buzz was a dork.

Did I miss something?
The guy has a press conference and now everyone is on his knees with mouth wide open. How many coaches have blown an introductory press conference? Name them please.
This hire is an infield single...not a home run.

How can you possibly say that RIGHT NOW? Unless, you have a crystal ball, you cannot say with certainty whether this is a good or bad hire. Beleive it or not, Shaka might not have worked out at MU for one reason or another--would he still be a great hire in hindsight? It's just such a media-influenced, silly statement.
I'm curious, if Wojo has a tremendous amount of on-court success at MU, does that make him an infield single still? I'm sure you thought Buzz was a bunt out in 2008.

Howland was a home run. In an age of parity, back to back to back final fours don't lie.

I missed the part where he went to back-to-back-to-back Final Fours for Marquette. These coaches are not one size fits all, brother. MU did their due diligence and if they didn't like what they saw in Howland, I trust their judgment. The hiring committee is privy to a whole host of factors that we are in the dark on.
And clearly, you missed the point of my first post.

Are you bobbing for apples or...
If one size doesn't fit all, then it sure as hell is hard to stuff marquettes hole with a duke's pole.
I thought it was interesting Cords specifically mentioned he talked to Jerry Colangelo as a reference for Wojo.

I thought Buzz was a foul tipped bunt with 2 strikes on presser day 6 years ago. I learned a valuable lesson and will give him some time to prove himself with the players on the court and on the recruiting trail.

Not just talked to him. It sounds like Jerry called Cords specifically to talk up the job Wojo has done with the national team. I was astounded by that.

A guy who lost control of his team is a Home Run?
I remember a discussion I had with Chicos after UCLA lost in Howland's last year. He lost that team much worse than Buzz lost this year's team.
I had always respected Howland and thought he was an outstanding coach. But that UCLA team was as badly coached as any I've seen. Now, maybe that was due to having guys like Shabazz on the squad, but it was basically just a bunch of guys out on the playground.
May have just been an aberration in Howland's career, but after seeing that, I wouldn't want him here.

Those things are not at all uncommon. The guy I coach club volleyball with was applying for an assistant women's coaching position at Cornell University (solely because he wanted to get a free doctorate from Cornell) and asked John Speraw, the current USA Men's Volleyball National Team coach and UCLA men's volleyball head coach to call Cornell on his behalf. If the top coach in the USA is calling Cornell University for their women's volleyball assistant coaching position, former NBA owners calling Marquette University for their head men's basketball coaching position is not a huge surprise.

Wojo is my team's coach. So I guess he is my "boy."
But I still appreciate Buzz's service. He gave me 5 of the best years of Marquette basketball that I have been alive for. He is the best Marquette coach that I have been alive for.
Tom Crean is the second. I'm not sure why we feel the need to bash our former coaches.

He may not have been impressive behind the mic, but he seemed pretty genuine. Hopefully we have found someone who finds a home here much like coach K found in Duke.

The best April Fools jokes take seven years.
Everyone wants to be excited about a new coach. And give him a chance. But any comparison/contrast of the WOW meter gives an overwhelming edge to Shaka. Marquette fans had to work hard to be/stay enthusiastic in the Wojo era. The enthusiasm is genuine now, not forced. Still have to perform on the court, but I'm feeing better about the program than I have in a long time.
