This may not apply to everyone so for those who don't understand I apologize in advance.
I don't think there is a greater reminder that Summer is fast approaching then the opening day of the MLB baseball season. Most of us have spent the last several months hunkered down trying to weather the cold temperatures, torrent rain, heavy snow fall, and long nights. Opening day is symbolic with the coming of Summer. The green grass, the blue sky, and a reminder that long days and warm nights will shortly be upon us.
It's baseball that reminds me that some things in life shouldn't have deadlines. Time is a concept which most of us feel we have too little of, and yet the game that has had the fewest changes of any major sport throughout it's history doesn't have a clock. It's a game still played from a bygone era when people either had more time or their perception of time was yet to be distorted into the notion of how much could be crammed into it. Conversations with friends and loved ones can be had throughout a game without waiting for a commercial break. For a few hours in the day it can feel like time can stand still and we can set aside the hectic nature that has become the status quo.
I just wanted to remind everyone that today should be a day when we all can stop and appreciate what it feels like when we stop rushing. I hope everyone here on Scoop has the chance today to fire up the grill, crack open an ice cold beer enjoy a few hours with the people that matter most amidst the backdrop of what truly is America's pastime.

In a year where I moved my "drinking more will make a horrendous performance watchable" philosophy up from April to January, I really could have done without this reminder, matty. Beautifully written, though.
I believe the federal government should pass a law prohibiting people from writing about all that Opening Day represents. It's such a goddamned cliche it drives me insane.

As part of a family of die hard Cubs fans, this last year alone I've seen the passing of my 93 year old great uncle and my 91 year old great aunt who have spent the better part of their lives wanting to see the Cubs win it all. 2003 so much troubled my uncle Carl to the point that he gave up watching them play for three seasons until we convinced him in the nursing home it would help him pass the time.
I get the cliche, but as a thirty something who has gained a little perspective now that my six year old daughter has taken a vested interest in the game and team she roots for have the same hope as my aging extended family members have had for decades makes today mean something.
I watched the Packers bring home the Lombardi trophy after thirty years.
Witnessed first hand Patrick Kane's OT goal in Philly to bring Lord Stanley's Cup back to Chicago after nearly 60 years.
I just want one for all the Cubs fans who have had their hopes dashed for over a century now.

Its funny cause I grew up on the northside of the city and my entire family are Cubs fans. I dont know how I became a Sox fan I just did. Probably had something to do with Paulie and The Big Hurt. Now im just waiting for the Bears to do their thing...
