Let me explain ...
Lots of people here think Crean was devastated by losing out on Iman Schumpert and it was believed to be a catalyst for him going to I4.
A few weeks ago in an interview Izzo said he too was devastated by losing out on Jabari Parker and said he was done recruiting top 10 players.
Point so far is losing out on big time recruits affects coaches. Probably because they invest a ton of time in getting them, to the point of neglecting other recruits, and wind up with nothing.
A few weeks ago we lost out on Charles Matthews (St.. Rita Chicago #1 pg, #11 overall) to Kentucky. If the stuff here is to be believed, we were a close second.
How much was losing Matthews a factor in Brent's leaving? If Matthews committed would he have stayed.
Thoughts?
Landing a guy like that may have been a reason for Buzz to stay, but I don't think Virginia Tech Buzz would have beaten Kentucky for that recruit, either. Personally, with nothing to go on, I don't think Buzz left because he thinks he will be able to land better recruits at Virginia Tech than he did at Marquette. That was certainly a big factor for Crean, but Virginia Tech is not Indiana, Indiana.
If this influenced Buzz it does not make too much sense. Buzz still will never get near taking recruits away from the UK's, Dukes, and UNC's of the world.
No.
And the whole Iman Shumpert thing is Mu Scoop myth. Crean would have gone to IU regardless.
Matthews just verbaled to UK a few weeks ago. The season was going south long before that.
No.
Crean was going to I4 even if Iman came here. Buzz was being pushed out of Marquette even if Charles Matthews was coming here.
Brent was fired because he didn't land Matthews.
I think Vander Blue was more the straw that broke the camel's back. Buzz was never the same after Van's decision to leave. It was like for the first time someone challenged his authority, ignored the "Buzzway" of doing things and did what was right for Van. It crippled Buzz in a way we may never understand. He became stubborn, everyone turned on him, and he wanted out. Fresh start. Let him make an NBA player out of a hard-working unknown athlete and enjoy moderate success with less pressure and restrictions.

I'm not exactly sure why, but this resonates.

Duh, Vander's gonna make more coin than Buzz.
Shumpert didn't come here because Crean took a limo to his house in the middle of the night and gave him a bunch of freaking blue and yellow balloons. I'd have passed on MU, too.
Buzz could've missed every tournament since and I'd still be glad Crean is gone.

I think this analysis is right on.
I was thinking the same thing when you brought this up.
Not getting Schumpert proved to Crean, that he would never get a 5 star at Marquette (Even though he went to Ga Tech)
You can also say that Bert wasnt confident in his recruiting ability in the new big east

Happy FFCD eve to you bro!
Except for the narrow victory over Georgetown the night after Matthews committed to UK, Brett never won another game at MU.
Vander leaving definitely had an adverse effect on Brett too.
There was some talk here that Matthews and Stone were friends and had some interest in playing together. I doubt seriously that Buzz would of left if he got a commitment from Matthews, which probably would of meant Stone was coming also. I think Stone ends up at Kentucky, especially if he does not commit to UW soon after the final four.
Hard to imagine Buzz would leave for that reason. Any coach should realize that when it comes to very high level recruits, most of them will end up at one of a handful of blue blood schools. If you are not one of those programs (and Marquette is not) you are going to miss many more than you will land and that should be the expectation.

He may not of left for that reason, but a commitment from Matthews probably means he stays.

Did that really happen? Wow, that must have been embarrassing for TC and uncomfortable for Shumpert.

It's Iman Shumpert, It's Iman Shumpert
