Title: Tony Walls
Post by: TallTitan34 on November 06, 2007, 10:38:40 AM
I was looking at the roster for next year on the Wiki and I saw this blurb about walk on Tony Walls next year.

QuoteTony Walls, a junior midfielder at Wauwatosa East and a member of the FC Milwaukee Under-17 team, has made a verbal commitment to join the Marquette University soccer program, and he also has been accepted as a preferred walk-on to the Marquette basketball team.  The 5-foot-10 Walls will be attempting a rare double at Marquette when he arrives on campus in the fall of 2008.

A few questions here.  Does preferred walk-on mean he doesn't have to try out or just he doesn't use up a scholarship?

Also if anyone knows anything about him since he is a preferred walk on does he have anything to contribute?  I see he is only 5'-10" but Acker isn't very tall either.

Doesn't the basketball scholie take precedence over all sports except football and would that not mean he would be a B-Ball scholie and a soccer walkon.

I'm not sure about that.  We had the discussion before, but there was no clear answer (I don't think).

Regardless, I see Walls is quite the soccer player (#1 in Wisconsin?).  Too bad he got hurt playing on his HS football team and didn't play/couldn't get his team to the championship.  Should be a good one (in soccer) at MU.

Marquette has had it's share of prefered walk on's over the years. Marcus West and Chris Crawford come to mind.

Prefered walk on's do not have to try out for the team but have roster spots. The soccer scholarship will take care of his education.

yea he was, well when you are 6'7 and have a high vertical, pretty much every corner kick is going to him.  I talked to my friends that play soccer at Platteville, and yea they all said he was a very good soccer player, due to his size, leaps and footwork.

Has anyone seen him play basketball?  I realize he won't be the next Chris Crawford but can he offer anything?  I guess we are already deep in guards.

you would think they have something in mind for him... kinda an odd situation to just give the guy a walk-on spot... he has to have something going for him... and FWIW my roommate played against Wes in basketball and Soccer and claims he hates him because he was so D@mn talented in so those 2 sports (jealously)

Well, hey, what about our boy Tommy Brice?  The whole student section demanded to see him with 2 minutes left in the game.  But yeah, isn't he a walk on?

And there was that Army ROTC guy that I think tried out every year and didn't make it till his senior year out of pity, I think.

Not sure about that characterization of Kuphall, that he tried out every year and out of pity they took him. -- A year ago, Crean had a book signing and only a couple guys were there went I went.  I ended up asking him about walkons .. he didn't name Kuphall, but said they thought they were close to picking up a good one this year.

I don't know if Kuphal was taken pity on.  He did start the second half against Savannah State last year.
