If duke beat mercer and then spanked Tenn, are we considering Martin?
Thoughts
I have heard that he was on our list from the beginning. He just got bumped up a few rungs on ladder because of the run.
The SEC tournament run was the more impressive factor

If anything, it takes away leverage from MU in negotiating a deal on the cheap. If Duke wins, there's a good chance that Martin is fired.

I had Tennessee beating Duke in my bracket, so I do not believe your scenario would have occurred in the first place.

In this scenario Tenn beat a 3 seed and a blue blood.
Instead they beat an 11 and 14 seed to make the S16.
How special is this? Does this accomplishment warrant a raise or a better job?
Vols also beat Iowa.

Vols also beat Iowa.
You mean the team that finished 6th in the B1G?
If this is the logic, the we should hire Wardle. They beat Virginia.
Iowa was ranked in the top 25, most of the season. Someone is naming teams the Vols beat in the ncaa tourament, they also beat Iowa and UMass. No logic, just a fact.

Whoa.....
Slow down, a rational response like yours may spur the OP to post another 25 topics.

Tennessee beat Virginia by 35 this year. Not that there was any logic behind your statement anyway.

Before this thread goes completely off the rails, we are we considering Martin?
As was noted here, he was close to getting fired last year and the Tennessee faithful were unhappy just a month ago.
Are we considering him because he guided the volunteers to a 12 loss season in a three bid league? Or are we considering him because Tennessee rocked the world by beating #11 Iowa, #6 Massachusetts and, #14 Mercer in the big dance?
Yes, I'm not impressed by any of this. So what does the MU brass find appealing?

There's enough material here for you to make 10 separate new topics all ending in question marks.
Don't confine yourself to only one reply.

Couple theories (not mutually exclusive)
1) Martin has a better shot of keeping our current recruits than Howland due to at least a few things
i) Martin plays a more uptempo game than Howland
ii) Martin has already developed relationships with some of our players and potential recruits
iii) He's played in the NBA
2) We are using Martin to get Howland to lower his asking price. If we make it publicly known that we really want this guy, Howland panics and lowers his asking price. I mean, where else is he going to go? Wake? Maybe, but we can compete with them on salary if push comes to shove

Man, how slow does Howland play? Cuonzoball is predicated on slow playing everything. We had back to back losses last season where we scored 36 and 38 points vs Virginia and Georgetown. We scored 41 and 49 in two of our losses to Florida this year. We were in the 50s against Texas A&M at home when we lost. That's actually the most stark difference from Pearl teams.
Martin's NBA career was 7 games and around 30 total points.

Howland's and Buzz's possessions/game were virtually identical the last five years at UCLA and Marquette.
My guess is that Howland's defensive minded teams actually played defense hence the reputation.

Man, you are making it so obvious that you are a Cuonzo hater and still in your feelings that Pearl left TN. Get over it buddy

Marquette had 39 in the Elite 8 loss. Had 49 points in loses to GB and Florida. This year scored 35 versus Ohio State at home. That stuff happens.

I have no desire for Pearl, but I am one who would love to see you hire Martin. It's solve a ton of our problems.
But I'm just being honest about his results, his coaching style and his recruiting level here. 10 games ago he was a dead man walking here. 16 and 10/7-7 in the SEC with 3 seniors, two juniors starting 3 of whom are all-SEC level players.
I personally hope whomever is in charge there sees it how you see it. Most of your fans though, probably won't enjoy it very much.

So the real question is who do you think Tenn. is going to pull if Martin gets poached? Where's the upgrade?

I have no idea, but I look at what is likely returning next season, the incoming recruiting class, and figure we'll struggle to make the NIT.
If Stokes goes, we lose over 80% of our scoring. Replacing that is going to be tough when about half of Martin's recruits are misses that have trouble getting into games. He's taken two Juco guys the last two seasons that have struggled to get on the court at all. Juco's are supposed to come in and at least play decent minutes.
I'm willing to gamble on being able to hire someone decent than take what I know about Martin, and that's barely making the tournament in year 3 with a veteran starting line-up we had.
When he took over we had 6 top 100 recruits on the bench and added Stokes, a top 15 player at mid-season. We went 19-15 with that team.
This year McRae and Maymon are the last of those 6. If Stokes goes Robert Hubbs will be the last top 100 player we have on the roster. Everyone else will be 100+ to unranked.
If Martin struggles so much with veteran talent, he's not likely to get it done with inexperienced guys who are 3 star or worse recruits.

Annnd this makes me immediately depressed that we're going after this guy
For those of you who don't like the hire, it's funny how true this turned out to be. ;D
