So is the mystery mans team still alive? Hoping for Stephans from state.
No assistants, please.
Jeff Goodman said on a Twitter that the mystery candidate is no longer in the tournament as of last night....so it's not anyone in the Elite 8.
It certainly seems it's Cuonzo Martin...

Tony Bennett is available to interview after last night.

What makes people honestly believe we have a chance at Bennett?
Pitino!
This from yesterday's SJ Mercury News. Just one writers opinion, but makes you wonder if he might be looking to make a jump. Not near the top of my list, by I have to beleive MU is taking a look at him...
Reaction V: And so ends another Stanford season, this one more successful than the previous five. Johnny Dawkins secured his return for 2014-15 by reaching the NCAAs, and my belief is that the run to the Sweet 16 likely bought Dawkins a second year (2015-16) under athletic director Bernard Muir. That he has evolved as a coach over the past two or three years is indisputable. (A few years ago, he tried to jam round pegs into square holes. Now, he makes the holes rounder.) Are two NCAA wins proof that he can take Stanford to the top tier of the Pac-12 and fill the empty seats in Maples Pavilion? No. Is he the best Stanford can do? Difficult to know. I'm curious what the reaction to recent developments is among the Stanford faithful ... if there even is a reaction.
Fred Hoiberg!

Don't be a Debbie Downer. Let us at least have a glimmer of hope that we could attract a very successful coach.

When he turned us down after Crean left he was coaching at Washington St. He's got a much better job now. Doesn't make sense.

Seriously, if the mystery candidate is now done, we should have an announcement Monday or Tuesday.

Guessing that will be the case...unless of course the are still other candidates.
Bennett is not leaving UVA for MU. Makes zero sense. Not happening.

I agree. Bennett has one of the best teams in one of the most high profile conferences around. There is no reason for him to leave as he would have to spend several years to achieve the same success at MU, and then not be in the ACC.
It is more likely that MU hires Howland or someone at Cuonzo's level.

You guys keep saying it makes no sense....none of you know TB's situation. Maybe he regrets not getting the job the first time, maybe he doesn't get along with his current administration, maybe he likes the tradition at MU. There are many reasons people choose to do things, like turning down 3mm and a better conference to stay at VCU.

True, but then couldn't you say the same thing about any coach?
I think the point is that it seems highly unlikely that Bennett would leave UVA for MU.

Either do you. Logic would seem to indicate those saying no chance have a far more likely chance of being correct.

I would love to be wrong on this! But realistically, I don't see MU getting Bennett. Bennett would be an IMPACT hire, though. Game changer.
Whoever we get should bring a point guard with him. Where would we have finished this year with say a Shabazz Napier at the point?

Unless rumors are true, and after this week maybe not, that the mystery candidate reached out to MU.

That is why I believe, realistically, Cuonzo is the mystery coach and not Bennett. Cuonzo was on the hot seat last year, and Bennett was on the King's throne.

Cuonzo was on the hot seat
last month before his team got hot and won 2 NCAA games.
Running after the "hot coach" from the tourney, does this work?
Is john Groce (Ohio s16 two years ago) really an upgrade over Bruce Weber at Illinois? I'm not so sure.
Is Andy Enfield (FGGU S16 last year) doing anything at USC. For now the answer is no.
Don't pick a coach because his team pulled off an upset or two. So, pass on Miller from Dayton (who is not an option anyway) and Cuonzo.
Thoughts?

I'm not at all saying I want Cuonzo, because I don't. I feel like we would be settling. All I am saying is that Cuonzo is most likely the mystery sweet 16 coach that reached out to MU.
I want someone that would give MU the WOW !!!! factor when announced. Unfortunately, I just don't see that happening now unless we get Howland. Because Bennett et. al. are not realistic, IMHO.
Our last two hires were career
assistants. And they were by and large successful. Yet people here are painting a potential theft of an SEC coach fresh off a S16 that has recruited two 5* recruits in 3 years at a high major program "settling"? Is half this board high? Or just completely lacking in perspective?

I do not see an impact hire in the works anymore. We need to get a great recruiter; Going after the Izzo
family tree is a good thing.

Just thought I would add a name in Gillen. But, Howland would great. He's been there.

Hell--might as well see if Raftery wants the gig. Former HC, great TV contacts, great sense of humor and he gets along with Bilas. That could bring ESPN into the fold.
