Post what you will miss the least about Buzz Williams.
One rule, no double posting the same thing.
I'll start...I always hated how Buzz would trash the players to the media. Always rubbed me the wrong way.
"I don't mean this in an arrogant way..."
Buzz didn't respect the process.
I will definitely not miss the rambling non answers post game. I will also not miss the incoherent lineups of last season.
Will not miss the awww shucks I'm just a country boy shtick....it was a good rags to riches story but after 6 years and however many millions flying around the country in a private jet, it didn't resonate
I will miss him as a person but not as a coach.
Thankful for this, thankful for that- we saw how genuine that was.
won't miss the freshman riding the pine.
Stubborn lineups
Referring to opposing players jersey numbers instead of their names
The mass substitutions
No composure on the sidelines
"I think xxxx (opponent)is really, really good"
Sweaty shirts
His Derrick love affair
Go .500 in the Big East and then trash it as a bad conference.
Buzz seemed a little chippy starting in the Elite Eight run and then disengaged this year. He may be a guy who needs to jump from job to job like Larry Brown. Fine. But don't act like an immature teenager on the way out and imply you are too good to be in a conference you didn't come close to winning.
"paint touches" oh, we had 6 "paint touches" on that possession but then took a circus shot at the shot clock buzzer. drove me nuts!

God yes.
Player rotations that followed no rhyme or reason.
I had forgotten about the line changes.
The most pathetic end of clock / out of bounds plays ever. Maybe, one or two worked in six years, and the rest were all busted plays in which the players made something happen.
"I am no more important than our trainer or graduate assistant."
"The best human being I've ever known"
Always playing down to the competition.
The man purse.
Completely ignoring the coaches box and getting warned every game, if not a T
playing Derrick Wilson 33 minutes a game.

...and that too
It's all about character...character of the player, character of the program.....10 seconds will make you want to puke
http://youtu.be/SRcx5j0xgJU
The constant transfers/players leaving the program.
His obsession with the paint.
Mickey Mouse tattoo
His awful Joel Osteenesque self righteous preaching.
The lack of recruiting outside shooters
The constant double teaming of post players who weren't good, leading to ball rotations for a wide open 3 or a wide open lay up.
stopping practice to pray for mbao after making his first shot....half way through the season.
The way he pronounces program
"Progrum"

A good one. "It will come down to a one possession game"...that's an ok option when we were likely to get blown out of the water, but why should it against a vastly inferior team?
The exaggerations -- "Lazar is as pure a human being as I have ever coached." "Chris Otule is the hardest working practice player...." Layer is the best human being.... There are other examples, but I've blocked them from my mind.

Ha. I forgot about that one. That's still crazy that a 7'2" guy, didn't have one put back in practice in any scrimmage until January?

The lack of recruiting outside shooters
The general idea that shooting was not a skill that he seemed to value in recruiting. It's not even just long range shooters - if we had guys who could knock down 12 footers the last 2 years we would have been deadly.
Then again, judging by the offense in this tournament (AWFUL), so would a lot of teams.
After any fall or spring signing period- talking about getting players "who can pass, dribble, and shoot...".
Going nuts at Jimmy Mac in the postgame after a win.
Not defending the three point shot.
Allowing 14 minutes a game go by with Gardner on the bench his senior season with an offensively challenged team.
Not realizing Deonte Burton is one of your five best players.
Burning clock with five minutes still to play in botht the Louisville collapse and the first round game against the Huskies.
All those are equally annoying to me. I couldn't choose a single thing.
His jacked-up face.
That damn gravelly voice. Clear your throat, man. Buy some throat lozenges. You're hard to listen to.
His "us vs the world" vibe he created between the players and the media/fans. Always reminding his players that "twitter says he can't shoot" blah blah blah.

The constant yelling the entire game will do that. And then his mini-me Autry yelling at the same time. I would not be able to play.

We ran a play this year I think it was at Nova or Providence that ended with Jamil streaking down the lane. We ran it several times in one game, and I can't recall seeing it again. It seemed to work, except for the fact that Jamil missed the layup every time. Yea, I think that was the best out of bounds play we ever ran.
Vibram-soled Gucci loafers. The most bizarre fashion statement of all. You can take the white trash out of the trailer park but you can't take the trailer park out of the white trash.

He rolls with a female handbag in the summer. Odd.
I'll add: his chewing habit.
I know it is cathartic to rip the man to shreds (and I admit to chuckling at some of these), but what good does it really do to air these grievances in a public forum? Potential future coaching options may see it and think twice about our fan base. Also, I find it interesting that some of the very things people are mentioning are what I found endearing about Buzz when he was "ours" just a week + ago...
Hearing multiple times how "humbled" he is.
Hank Raymonds was a humble man, never had to tell anyone, just showed it through the life he led.

Move along, nothing to see here folks.
1. The downhome lonesome cowboy phony persona.
2. The idiocy of claiming D. Wilson is a gamechanger
3. Buzzspeak
4. His Louisville meltdown
5. Inability to recruit quality bigs
6. "I love his story"
7. Derrick is the best defensive player I have ever coached
8. Inability to defend the three.
9. 17-15 this season
His prima donna-mis, also high on Cord's list no doubt.
"I talk to him every day"

Thanks for this post, old timer. Hank was class and humility personified. "Character revealed" from this point on will make me think of Hank, not Buzzdiculous.
Reliance on recruiting in Texas with Chicago 80 miles away.
I will definitely miss Buzz. His first five years had me thinking we had a chance at a National Championship in the coming years. However, I think this past year showed a lot of his weaknesses. Namely roster turnover and being able to play young guys.
With all the turnover, we had Derrick Wilson and Jake Thomas as starting guards (Great kids and have a role on MU, but that role is 10-12 minutes, not 30). I've heard Buzz's defense is super complex. I'd prefer a simpler defense that allows the younger guys to pick it up quicker. It's not like Buzz has consistently had great defensive teams here. Having the talent we did sitting on the bench because they couldn't figure out the defense is inexcusable, and falls on coaching.
Also, the manufactured drama between the team and the fans/message boards/media. Sometimes it seemed like he was almost blaming the players rather than taking responsibility.
However, he did some great things off the court. He had some great coaching jobs (The Acker/Cubillan backcourt and the Elite 8 team). I'll miss him, but definitely would have been much more disappointed if he bolted last year than I am now.

So much this.
Ners starting 17 new threads a day about Derrick Wilson.
Regardless of Buzz being ours a week + ago, you probably still hated some things about him. I wouldn't get your pantys in the bunch over a thread like this. BCB and the rest of the bridge club there will keep it positive though.

I'm not terribly worried about Ben Howland, Cuonzo Martin or any other potential coach skimming through MU Scoop to get the lowdown on our opinions of our former coach.
Nor do I think anyone is sitting at home thinking, "Man, I sure could use that $2+ million salary from Marquette, but not if their fans are going to mock my idiosyncrasies after I leave."

There are countless other coaches who "work hard."
I felt like during the last 3 off-seasons something wasn't right, like the players revolving door or coaches leaving, lots of churning once Buzz established he could win some. All the rumors every year!
I really liked Buzz - have a signed artwork of him from a Blue Gold auction from him from 4 years ago (now what to do with it?)
that being said:
1) The southern country bumpkin bit - every person I have seen do that can not be trusted. I said that to my wife in the early days.
2) The "were no good" mantra - guess what Buzz, MU pays you 2M+ a year to be good - they are your players you recruited, you coach them - I don't want to hear "we are no good". The fricken season was essentially over when he told the fish fry crowd how no good his team will be for 30 minutes before the season.
3) Th double talk - "my guys eat at McDonalds" when they are staying at 5 star hotels...
4) The "Derrick Williams is better than JR" BS. OK, coach - you are either lying, a poor judge of talent, too loyal to players, or not putting the best roster out - which is it?
5) Consistent subbing - let them play
6) Constant yelling throughout the game - let them play - this year got real annoying of his droning voice yelling...
I like Buzz, but he is a Vander buzzer beater and 2 unbelievable Jamil's 3's away from just another guy at Marquette....

playing Derrick Wilson 33 minutes a game.
And 40 Minutes in Overtime games.....
Thank god thats over. .
And #1 by far. - player drama
Sure every team has transfers you say. Marquette under Buzz sure did - at least at the national average but also:
1) committed recruits who never make Sept or the first game - Newbill, Roseboro, Taylor, McKay
2) game suspensions (or half game) periodically - have not seen that elsewhere
3) scandals, even though never amount charges - see Chicago tribune
4). Coach dismissed for recruiting violations - don't see that at every program
5). 2 players announce they are transferring to only return? Something up there too... Heard some strange stuff on that from students...
6). Maymon saga, blue saga
WAY TOO MUCH DRAMA with Buzz's teams. Maybe his "always recruiting" mantra was a self-fulfilling prophecy. Really look for more calm on the player drama front with next coach.

This is why the jig is up credibility wise for Brent, not only with Warrior fans, but with the national press. The only way he survives the coming four years is win big time. He may well do that in Blackhole, Va, but the pressure will be brutal because he has shown his true character ... and, I don't mean than in an arrogant way.
I will always enjoy the momoery of him dancing on West Virginia's floor.

Hey Brent, See Shabazz Napier- a REAL college starting point guard!!
I will not miss anything about Buzz provided we hire a top tier coach. If we do not hire a top coach I will miss Al even more. Al was a great coach and an even better entertainer. He rubbed some the wrong way Dickie V. But he was the real deal. A game changer and a true New Yorker who made magic with his heart and soul.

I actually think that Juan next year is going to have a massive transformation. I think like Crean kind of repressed Matthews abilities, I think Buzz crushed Juan's abilities. I expect him to make a big improvement next year...way to early predictions.
Juan averages 12 pts 7 rebounds per game next year and shoots 37% from 3.

I think it will be true and there will be others that improve offensively. Confidence is key to shooting and Buzz did not instill that. Get the right coach and things will improve. In previous years the mature JUCOs could ignore the Buzz negatives. Some players need more support and getting jerked around with continual line-up changes hurt. I expect you will hear more from the players over time. They have had a very tough road. Some of Buzz's qualities were spot on, others missed by a mile IMHO.
