Title: Coaching Update (Other Schools)
Post by: GoldenWarrior11 on March 28, 2014, 04:17:00 PM
South Florida has reportedly offered UNLV's Dave Rice it's head coaching position.

Wake Forest is reportedly interested in Tubby Smith and Danny Manning for its head coaching position.

Boston College is reportedly holding out hope for Tommy Amaker.  If he declines, it sounds like Mike Hopkins is their man.  Other candidates apparently include: Mark Schmidt and Walter McCarty (yes, former NBA player).  Jim Calhoun is no longer interested.

Why does this matter?  Marquette's (reportedly) interested candidates - Howland, Wardle, Martin, etc. - are not mentioned as being candidates at other schools.  It could also mean that other schools are waiting for the top domino to fall (Marquette) before making their move.  Or, maybe it just means that we really had no Plan B after Shaka.

At least, for the moment, it doesn't appear that we are in competition with other schools for the services of a particular coaching candidate.

Well the ESPN comments thread on the Dave Rice to USF story has turned into a Bash Howland so the Vegas chapter of the DoneDeal club must feel Howland is getting a look see at UNLV

Why doesn't Mick Cronin's name come up? Been name dropping---How about Kevin Stallings. He's 53.
Don't much about Vandy program. Would he be a good fit.

Isn't Mick from Cincy?  I think Cincy is his dream job.

I like both coaches, but don't know that either is a fit.  Both coaches appear to be firmly entrenched within their programs.  While it certainly wouldn't be a deterrent to me (or a number of other people on the board), it also appears the school wants a younger candidate.

I doubt these other schools give a damn who MU chooses. They'll go about their business.

You know what's interesting? How little buzz (definitely no pun intended) the MU job opening seems to be generating in the national media. I think I've seen a couple of tiny articles that mention Howland and Wardle. And that's it. For the supposed top available job, I'm not reading  a whole lot on it.

Haven't heard Stallings' name mentioned, but he would be infinitely better than Martin, Wardle or Weber.

Well, take a breath, maybe it is not. Who knows. We certainly want to think we are the best, time will tell. If we end up with another assistant..........

Dave Rice has a very nice incoming recruiting class to UNLV for whatever that is worth.

The Plan A was bungled, so why would we expect Plan B to go any better? Oh, I forgot. Dick Strong, Doc and Cords are all on the case. But wait, they were also on Plan A.

I hate to agree with you, but....

The Smart situation was handled horribly. From Monday's social media meltdown...to the multi-day arm twisting...to yesterday's strange presser.

Hope Plan B goes smoother. Couldn't go much worse.
