Title: Greg Gard?
Post by: Eye on March 28, 2014, 11:08:07 AM
I don't like the idea one bit, but just had a Wisconsin-Madison booster who I trust text me that MU is looking at Greg Gard.

When I talked to Greg Gard last week he didn't think he would get a call, then again that was only a few hours after Buzz left.

Looking and interested are two different things.

Better than over half the candidates being discussed lately.  Still a no.

I have heard Bill Cords won't do anything that involves a UW guy...

He honestly might be my last choice of everyone discussed so far.

Hide in the closet and call 911.

Has he ever been mentioned as a candidate for any opening anywhere?

I don't even think he'll be considered when Bo retires.

Lifetime assistant.

I think it's working.  Having all of these below average names tossed in the mix has me feeling better about landing a guy like Martin.  Now rather than being upset we didn't get our hands on Shaka or Ben, we will all be happy we didn't get a below average candidate.

IMO, I would agree with you but that is 100% my opinion and based on nothing I have heard directly or indirectly

Your disclaimer is nothing short of exemplary.

The only reason I can see MU expressing interest in Gard is so we're not as upset when they hire Wardle.  Then Cords can say, "well, it could have been Gard."

Who would want a successful assistant and lead recruiter? We had Buzz who could really recruit with anyone.

So who would you want?
   Brust or Thomas?
   Jackson or Derrick?
   Decker or Jamil?
   Gasser or Juan?
   Kaminsky or Otule/Gardner?

Looks like Gard could out-recruited Buzz with his eyes closed. Gard knows how to recruit basketball players. Buzz recruited athletes. Gard recruited big men. Buzz recruits, oh I don't know, non-big men or stiffs (Gardner's game was actually suited much more to UW than MU.

I'm certainly not saying Gard is the answer, but he certainly should be listed as one the options.
I take the guys that the non-recruiter gets any day of the week.

I said this previously, it would be incredibly short sighted and dumb on MU's part NOT to interview him. I would 100% call him, absolutely.

MU has everything to gain by interviewing him, zero to lose.

if you hire gard when the likes of marshall and howland are showing high interest i the job...you're an idiot, and would be run out of town in less than 5 minutes.

i think we were as serious of an option as shaka has ever considered, and we have howland and marshall showing interest.  what a great position for MU to be in.  someone like dick strong isn't going to be worried about a strong (no pun intended) personality...i know a few people that have worked for him, and his personality is much the same.  i can't believe he would be worried about howland's recruiting issues, and i also can't believe that his say isn't worth more than anyone's.

from what others have posted, i continue to think tony bennett is in play (although i'd rather have howland).
