Title: Dwight Burke
Post by: TallTitan34 on November 04, 2007, 10:05:02 PM
I was a little surprised to see Dwight start over Ooze but I'm sure Crean was just trying different things.  While his offense needs to improve (free throws especially!) I thought he had a hell of a game on defense.  How many minutes do you see Dwight getting with the loss of Mbakwe?

I'd say it depends on the situation. If we're playing a very defensive minded game, he will get the bulk of the extra minutes. If it's more attacking, I can see Trend getting those minutes.  We will have to wait and see how this pans out.

I still see ooze getting the start the majority of the time, burke had a great defensive game today, but in a league like the big east, those defensive plays wont always be there...if they did one lob pass, burke might have been in trouble

I would have thought the opposite.  If we're going defense, isn't Blackledge a shot-blocker?  Or is that just in scrimmages against our own guards?

I see Burke getting around 10-12 min/game now that Mbakwe is out of the picture.  He needs to board his @ss off this year.  Anything more will be exceeding my expectations.

Were you guys watching the same game I was? Dwight Burke great on defense?

I saw a D2 team, made up of small slow guys out rebound MU. Dwight Burke had the most minutes of any Big, so that doesn't say much to me. (Ous was pretty bad also)

He couldn't even score a basket. He hasn't improved at all in two years!!

I saw some great positives out of Burke last night. He seemed very aggresive on both ends of the floor, even though it might not translate in the box score (even if it's just a D2 team we're playing.  The one thing that this team needs to improve on is free throw shooting, especially Burke, if he wants get more aggressive and take it to the basket more, he's gonna have to drain his free throws.

well i don't know if you were paying attention to college basketball this whole weekend, if you weren't you missed something.  You know Michigan state... the school that everyone points out how much better their front court was than ours last year... well, they lost to a D-2 school in grand valley state.  so before you go harping on our front court, remember it may take a little time for everything to gel for a lot of teams.

I wouldn't be too concerned about MU getting out-rebounded last night.  It was a product of our forcing 31 turnovers (therefore not allowing as many shot attempts) and missing the back end of most of our trips to the line in the first half (resulting in easy defensive boards for the other team).

If we were getting pounded on the offensive glass, then we might have something to really be worried about.  But, Northern St. only had 6 offensive boards, coming almost entirely off of long rebounds.

Yeah, most of NSU's offensive boards came off of bad misses that came off long.  I was not too worried about the rebounding.  People look at the box score and assume that it tells a true story of the game.

I thought the best aspect of Dwight's play was the lack of dumb fouls. Hopefully that continues against bigger, stronger opponents.
