Title: Time to be a big boy....part deux
Post by: ChicosBailBonds on March 24, 2014, 12:19:44 PM
In 2008 I wrote on Cracked Sidewalks it was time for MU to be a big boy.  Time to take on a name coach, show someone will step on a stone to get to MU.  There are times for assistants, time for established coaches.

Someone asked the other day when the last time MU hired away an established men's coach?  Mike Deane?  Though I would hardly call that a major hire in the sense of coaches that create a splash.

This is all easy for me to say, its not my money...its the school's.  MU has had tremendous success identifying young assistants that have served the program well over the years.  The downside is they don't last long.  Maybe MU is ok with that. As a fan, it becomes awfully tiring.  Paints MU as a stepping stone.  At some point would like to steal someone else's coach to come to MU.

More than a little worried right now that the "targets" aren't going to happen and we go to tier 2.  We will make a good hire regardless, but for once it would be great to have a hire that 80% to 90% of the fan base can say thumbs up.   We'll see.

And what is the cause of such concern?

+1

I think you're 48 hours early on us moving to tier 2.  If nothing breaks by Wednesday morning, I'm with you.

Patience

Its the fandom in me.  Nothing more at this point, other than watching it year after year where a fanbase thinks they are getting someone and they don't get them.  Really hard to contain these searches in this day and age due to the media stuff.  Lots of rumors become "fact" in a second, fans get overly excited, then are let down.  Tough position to be in.

I hear ya about the nerves, Chicos, but I think this time we'll get it done with the big hire.

Hoping it's Howland because I don't think he'd bolt for a "better" job or a "better" conference at this point in his career.  With Smart, you just never know.

Still, either would be awesome.

How much do you think not having an AD and Pres in place is affecting the deal?

Chicos - Who would you consider a "great hire"?  Smart? Howland? Marshall?  All of the above?

Why worry?  Goose/Keefe have ensured it will be an Impact Hire.  Just kick back and wait.

Well it certainly is not a plus.

I wonder if Michigan State fans are upset that they got stuck with an assistant coach instead of making a big-name splash after Heathcote left.

I wonder how thrilled Indiana fans are today that they stole a coach from another program.

All sides to this issue. Just make the best hire possible. No matter who it is, we won't be able to judge him for five six years.  ;)

What about Coach K?  I'd say Duke's pretty happy.

I think any of those three is a splash hire, I'd rank Howland probably 3rd on that list but that's ok.  Great hire?  Have to wait 5 years (or in Buzz's case..6)  ;)

There are others, as well, that would fit the bill as a splash hire.  My bigger concern is none of the above happens or any other potential candidate in the same ballpark and we have to settle.

A lot has been said about no AD being a detractor.  It could be to the benefit of an impact coach, in that they may get a say in who it eventually is (point to negotiate) .  A good thing in the long run.  Hopefully we'll see it all resolved quickly.

No it's not.  And take my word for it.  I have been back in the kitchen.

It was named after Sam Battistone and Newell Bohnett.   First name of Sam and first two letter of Bohnett.  In the 1970's, pretty big place around the country.

Big Boy's aren't around as much as they used to be, but their burgers are great.

Good to see MU acted like a big boy

I think saying we have no AD is not accurate...Cords has been there and made big hires before.  Plus I think Broeker is going to be the AD, but they didn't have time to announce it before the Buzz stuff broke.  Didn't want it to look like a panic move or look like Buzz left because of that.

I bet they name the coach and then a couple of weeks later name Broeker.

Good point.  It will be interesting none-the-less.  It would be nice to see us get a name instead of "anyone know this guy?"

Reasonable explanation for the name, but unfortunately, they decided to use a tiger for the symbol - a la "Little Black Sambo."
