Title: Bruce Weber
Post by: ScoopReader on March 23, 2014, 03:38:28 PM
If you search "Bruce Weber" on twitter all the KSU folks seem to think he is coming to Marquette. Apparently he is blocking all new followers as of today.

Anyone think MU would want Weber over Howland or Smart/Marshall?

I know Bruce Weber personally, like him, respect him as both a person and a coach, and wish him nothing but success.

But I don't want him to coach my alma mater.

Judging from what Goose and Keefe were saying in that other thread... I don't think Bruce Weber would elicit that kind of a reaction...

Weber is a great person but a below average coach.

I agree. In fact based on Goose's recent posts only two names elicit that type of response from him; Smart and Marshall.

There's only a few mentions of it on twitter.  I won't hold my breath.

No.  Lock the thread.  Bruce is a good dude and a competent coach, but he'd be Mike Deane here.  No chance in hell.

No way.  I didn't realize he was still coaching.  He road the Keady train way too far.

With talk of a Wednesday announcement, not sure Marshall is one of the two. Guessing Howland or Smart.

Yeah to quote MU alum Chris Farley in Tommy Boy, "Seems like a nice guy."

But do I want him running MY company (team)? Nnnnnno thanks.

Anecdote about Weber that relates some to how many MU fans feel right now ...

When Bill Self left Illinois for Kansas just 3 years after Lon Kruger left Illinois for the NBA, most Illini fans I knew -- and I knew lots of them -- just wanted the next hire to be someone who would stick around for a long time. Of course they wanted to win, but they really wanted a loyal guy who would disprove the notion that Illinois was a stepping-stone job.

When Weber was hired out of Southern Illinois, more fans than not were unhappy with the hire. When the team got off to a rough start his first season, there were calls to fire him before the end of the first semester -- I kid you not. And some of those calls came from influential alums.

Illinois stuck with Weber and when the team got within a few points of the national title the following season, Weber was hailed as a guy who had been unjustly wronged by his many critics. He was a great coach, a great family man, a great representative of Illinois. Plus, he was a guy who surely would stay at Illinois for life!

A couple of good seasons followed but, in general, Weber's teams disappointed. He didn't recruit all that well and he could not sustain success. So, of course, he was shown the door and Illinois fans were standing at that door to boot his butt on the way out.

I have been a close observer of the Illinois program for two decades. In that time, the Illini have had five basketball coaches: Weber, Lou Henson, Kruger, Self and now John Groce.

The first two guys were loyal and never would have left the school -- but loyalty proved to be a one-way street. The next two guys left at the first good opportunity that came their way and are reviled by jilted fans.

Time will tell whether the current coach is the loyal guy who gets canned or the disloyal guy who gets hated.

Well, if part of the process is eliciting opinions from alumni, I'm guessing there aren't many with different opinions than those in this thread.  We should be safe.
