I don't know specifically, but a big time coach at a big time university!  How's that for specifics? But who would it be?

No we don't need any stinking ND coaches.

Actually no, he is a great bench coach.

Howland is not currently employed so he can be formally contacted.

You cannot directly contact a coach with a contract as part of that coach's contract says he cannot discuss other jobs.  So you do it back channel, call his agent, that is one of the reasons they have them.  Or, his agent calls your AD and says his client is interested in your opening.

So the only names we will ever know that were directly contacted are the unemployed like Howland.  Coaches that are employed we will never know as it all second hand anyway.

The only big time coach at a big time university that I could think of that we consider a move would be Bennett.  Wisconsin ties.  He would be considered big time and Virginia is a big time university.

Doubt Tony would consider MU since there was and probably still is some bitterness in not offerin' his father, who was at UW-Green Bay, after KO bolted.

That might be true but I can't figure out who else would fit the parameters of being a current big time coach at a big time university and that is willing to come to MU.  I keep thinking of coaches who are looking to get out of the hot seat of their current position.  I don't want an Oliver Purnell type that had some success but sees the writing on the wall that its never going to get that good again.  That is why I mentioned Tony Bennett.

The caveat is, this coach contacted MU with interest. That is why I wonder if Brey or Matta are happy at football schools?

I don't see Matta leaving Ohio state.  I have mixed emotions on Brey.  Not that he is a domer but that I never really liked his teams and his post season success have been minimal at best.

Maybe at that point in time he wasn't ready to come home just yet and now he is ready.   You never know.  Some leave their home and never come back.  Some leave and come back quickly and some leave and after a decent time away eventually come back home.

I doubt the validity of the rumor so I am not holding out hope, just saying he fits the description better than most.

Thad thinks he can win an NC in his seat and he's right.  He will never move unless "encouraged" and that is not happening.

ND is happy with Brey as he keeps them interested during the FB off-season.  That is all they want and he delivers.  Why would he leave?

Neither of these are going to happen.  Next idea

First, strange things happen.  Not many saw Buzz leaving to go to VaTech.  Second, you may be correct, than you tell me of a current major college coach at a major conference that might view the MU job as appealing?

Answer is all of them find it appealing.  But they have to judge it against their current situation.  How many want to leave?  Answer very few right now.

When a Mike Deane is waiting to dance you can hardly refuse. Bennett is a smart man and should appreciate Marquette's decision. If he cannot, well then, he's not the man to steward our beloved Warriors.

Just because a high major coach is interested, and even a highly successful high major coach, it does not mean we want them.

If Iowa State's Fred Hoiberg was interested?  Are we?  He managed to get to a three seed with transfers, jocos and other "problem children."  Does that fit our mission?

I would not consider Iowa State's Fred Hoiberg a high major coach.  Think bigger school, bigger name. Also, we are very interested.

Is the dude sharing this tidbit getting off on giving you hints without telling you?  I just don't get the "I know something you don't know" nonsense

I don't doubt your info about there being a high major coach having reached out, but some of the names tossed out are what get me. For example, what makes you think Matta? I see little that we offer over OSU. And I really hope you were being sarcastic in thinking Rick Pitino instead of Richard.

I could see Brey, I could see Weber. I'd also pass on both in favor of Howland.

by "big name" do you mean big name overall?  Or just big name in basketball?

Is Notre Dame considered a big name in basketball?  I mean, it's a solid program and all, but "big name"  Idk.  Just my opinion

Matta could be way off, I was just thinking of coaches at schools where Football is king.  I would also prefer Howland over those two.

I have no idea what's going on in most of this thread, so I'll just hope that most of you are being sarcastic with the names being thrown out.

I was with Coach K, but I think the bigger point was to toss out names and see if they lead to anything. @DenverMU has a feeling that it's a coach from a  football school, tired of playing second fiddle. Until we know who it is, it's fun to speculate and make up reasons it makes sense. Better than complaining about Beige Buzz (figured it's a good parallel to Tanned Tommy?)

If it's Brey, I see two silver linings

1)  Stick it in ND's face
2)  Have Brey on CBS during the S16 games talking about how strong the BE is and has more overall basketball potential than the ACC, with the latter having football and all.

While that would be nice, those two things would LITERALLY be the only two positives to come out of that hire. Not even figuratively, LITERALLY. Not worth it to me. Not worth it at all.

If Howland is interested and we hire Brey, I may give up my season tix.

I could see Smart or Marshall over Howland, but Brey isn't even in the ballpark with those guys.

The longer this goes on the more I keep thinking back to when Scuzz was hired.  We all speculated about a bunch of big names, then went "Who?"  Hope that doesn't happen again.

Doubt it. MU is currently the best job on the market. Gotta take advantage of that while its still the case.

Biggest difference here is a big time established coach has made i public that he wants the job.  Now if Howland were to accept the Wake job tonight, I'd be concerned about where that would leave us because then we'd be back to speculating
