Title: If the Big East sucks, what was Buzz telling prospective recruits?
Post by: Tums Festival on March 22, 2014, 09:12:14 AM
Was telling telling them the Big East was a good place or did he tell them it wasn't what it used to be? Can't believe he would've said it wasn't a great conference, kinda hard to get guys by saying that. Did Charles Matthews tell Buzz he picked Kentucky because the SEC was a better conference and because they're on ESPN?

And for the people running down the Big East all of a sudden, where is a better place for Marquette to go? The Big East is the best basketball first conference and to bail on it after only one year is silly.

He didn't talk to recruits about basketball or the conference, only about life and stuff.

Yeah, I also wonder what he said to the Marquette players? Sorry I convinced you to come here, it's just not what I envisioned for myself anymore...you guys might want to check into bailing too.

Sad to see Buzz go, but not as sad as I would have expected to feel.  I sense opportunity in the air for MU.  I don't think it was time for Buzz to go, he was still building here and had established himself as a big name.  When Crean left, it was sad, but I felt that it was best for both Crean and MU and that his time had come.  Crean had reached his peak.  Buzz was still building.

Buzz had not peaked at MU, in my opinion, and this move in the short term is not positive for MU nor for Buzz on a professional level.  However, unlike last time, it seems like some top coaches are interested and pursuing this job.  That has me in a positive mood and this could work out better for MU, just like the move from Crean to Buzz was for the better.

More stability with players sure would be a positive.

I really think for Buzz, if he was making this decision in June, it would be different.  Don't discount all the criticism this year from fans after coming off an Elite 8.  Don't discount the toll that this last season combined with the horrible winter had on him mentally.  Add in that he is basically the lead recruiter and he simply is exhausted and you could tell he felt a lot of pressure, etc.  Now, was Buzz the top recruiter because he had to be and Chew isn't getting it done or is it just Buzz being Buzz?  Combine it all and you have an emotional wreck and he makes a hasty decision.  Add in instability in his boss's positions and you have a recipe for a coach to want to make a change.

He deserves criticism for the PG play, but unfortunately I don't think it is not playing Dawson or Mayo at PG  It is in not recruiting a quality PG with an offensive game (two point guards in a row without the ability to score/shoot).  He didn't have an option this year.

I don't wish Buzz any ill will.  He left the program in good enough shape and took us on a great ride, with unfortunately some off court stuff we could do without.  He was a decent guy in my limited meetings with him.  Strange, sure, but a decent guy and much more so than Crean or Dean or O'Neil before him.  It is amazing that I suspect that if Vander had come back and/or if Duane had been healthy, we might not be talking about a new coach.  Vander made a poor decision and one year later it may have resulted in Buzz making a hasty decision.

But, I think we may rise higher once again this time... Crean to Buzz to ?.  I expect a positive outcome this time.  For Crean and Buzz it was up in the air as to what would happen.

I find it interesting that after Charles Matthews committed to Kentucky on February 26, we beat Georgetown the next night, and then didn't win another game the rest of the season.

IMO, it's not interesting.

Crean said, "welp, I guess MU has a ceiling" and then left for IU, which has a higher ceiling.  VTech does not have a higher ceiling than MU.  Not even close.
