An AD he was in a power struggle with and whom he undoubtedly wanted pushed out. Makes no sense to give him an easier way out in the event he got what he wanted; LW gone

Which is why so many of us older fans are skeptical of the inner workings at MU. This is a University that manages to trip over it's own feet a little to often. I certainly hope we make a good hire and not cheap out for an assistant to promote.
