"I am a people person."
Kid has an LOI and it's pulled from under his feet? I read the old thread and rumor back then was that Buzz didn't even call Newbill to tell him. I believe Newbill's side right now.
The Newbill instance has always made me hesitant about Buzz. I was always reluctant to accept the "aww gosh, gee-willickers" schtick from him. But then I would see things like Buzz's Bunch, Dom James tweeting him thanking him for spiritual advice, and other stories that Buzz would do things and specifically go out of his way to tell the media *not* to publish it.
As I posted earlier today, the guy would entertain offers because he is a "people person." It is now 100% safe to say that we can interpret that as "People are great because I can use them to help me advance my career." He would write dozens of letters per month, not because he cared about people in the same way that Father Naus did, but because he was always keeping his options open.
Anybody on twitter should tweet all of VT's recruits and tell them about the incongruence of "the gosh-golly schtick" and DJ Newbill's story.
DJ was BF'd by Buzz
The timing and mass publicity from the Buzz's bunch story after it has been around for 6 years following this season caught my eye.
I am not saying anything bad about Buzz but why would that story come out now? The season was over he didn't get much publicity all year with a weak team and then BAM that story comes out and Buzz name is everywhere for a couple of days. I found that very strange.
As to this point I was thinking about this on the way home. In addition to transfers we had some strange scholarship events pan out under Buzz. One can only wonder what he really was going for
I'm expecting an "I told you so" from philly coach.
Some folks down in New Orleans might have a few things to add.

Reminds me of the Jimmy Buckets sob story right before the draft. Different story, similar situation I guess.

I was castigated by most members of this forum back in 2010 when Buzz pulled his commitment from DJ Newbill. I have questioned Buzz's true intentions since listening to the voicemail messages he left for Newbill's high school coach four years ago. Buzz did not contact Newbill or his family, instead choosing to have the kid's high school mentor relay the devastating news. If that's not a dubious tactic, I'm not sure what would qualify. Buzz was by everyone's account an estimable man who kept his word and delivered on his commitments. He was a loyal man who sincerely appreciated the incredible opportunity Marquette afforded him when the school took a chance on a relatively neophytic basketball leader. For at least the second time now Buzz Williams has proven to be less than truthful and insincere. I'm sorry the rest of you have gotten a chance to see the other side that was so disappointingly unveiled to me back in 2010. The way he handled the Newbill situation was certainly duplicitous and today's news shows that wasn't an anomaly. Remember, Buzz will stay at Marquette as long as the school will have him.
"Here's the thing: My title has changed. My W-2 has changed. But my heart hasn't changed," he said. "This is a business that's full of egos, full of media-savvy people, full of exposure, full of money, and a lot of time that changes people. I don't want my title, I don't want my income to ever change who I am. "I understand the evolution of how coaches change and how the media and the power hungriness of it all changes people. But I refuse to let it change me. I know I'll get older and I'll handle it better, I hope, but I don't ever want to change what I believe in my heart to be right.
"I'll be here as long as they'll have me here."
God! Stop with the Newbill references. Please. Let it go.
