Title: DePaul true attendance
Post by: LloydMooresLegs on March 10, 2014, 10:26:46 PM
Couldn't believe these numbers.  From Crains:
Two and a half years ahead of the scheduled opening of a 10,000-seat DePaul basketball arena next to McCormick Place, the Blue Demons' already meager attendance figures are heading in the wrong direction.

DePaul men's basketball attendance dropped 27 percent year over year this season to just more than 1,900 fans per game, according to Allstate Arena ticket records obtained by Crain's.

A total of 30,566 fans passed through the turnstiles at the Rosemont venue over 16 games this regular season based on the Ticketmaster scan system, which tracks exactly how many people come inside.

That's about 30 percent of the 101,972 that DePaul reported as its full-season attendance number, which counts tickets given to charities and at least a couple thousand seats the school buys to block out space for students, regardless of whether they actually go. Such a counting method is common: DePaul, like many private institutions and pro teams that own their home venues, count total tickets distributed rather than people.

This year's final attendance number brings the average over the past four years at DePaul games to just under 2,700 fans per game.

The low figures aren't shocking when you consider the Blue Demons' 11-20 record this season — the sixth straight in which it will own at least a share of last place in the Big East Conference standings.

I'll bet Loyola has more paying fans.

It's ok!  Oliver Purnell is coming back next year.  Jean Lenti-Ponsetto already said it was part of the master 5-year plan.

Woof

Is that in reference to the 1,900 who go, or the 12,000 who don't?

Forget the new arena. They should seriously consider folding up the program. Nobody would even know it happened.

I just checked Rivals (and someone correct me if I'm wrong), but DePaul currently has ZERO incoming recruits (either next season, or the year following) from Chicago (let alone the state of Illinois).

For all the hell, fire and brimstone this board endured this season, no one can argue the high volume of recruits that Buzz is bringing into the program.

It's even crazier when you consider that 1/3 of those 30K fans were at the Marquette game. That makes the average of the rest closer to 1,200.  Those are D3 numbers.

Did they count their dance squad, cheerleaders, and pep band?  That would add another 100 or so.

Losing the ND home game was a huge loss for DePaul attendance, too.  The opponents fans generally fill the place so losing Syracuse and other large schools with a big Chicago alumni base is likely the big driver.

Combine Creighton's two least attended games this season and they'll be more than this.

It's funny how much people complain about Dayton joining the Big East (which they will),when we have this dog adding absolutely nothing to the conference.

Maybe, but not by much. I'd say its probably about the same.

Loyola also plays on campus. And the majority of its students live in Rogers Park.

I think the McCormick Place move will help. But they won't be filling that place up...they will be getting 3 or 4 thousand instead of 1 or 2.

Any insight as to how many total attendees MU had this season?

I know they were right about where they were last year. I think they had a chance to improve if they got decent attendance at the St. Johns game.

Close to 250,000.  Sixteen home games at about 15,000 per game.

Average was 15,327 for the season, over 16 home games.

Would have been good for 14th nationally last season.

Are you referring to reported attendance (if so see above) or "butts in the seats?"  If the latter, I think there have been estimates floated around here in the past, but I don't think anyone has actually confirmed actual attendance.  I

If I had to guess... I'd probably estimate actual attendance as a percentage of the reported attendance figures (read: not the BC capacity) as follows:

Weekend cupcakes: actual attendance 65% of reported attendance
Weekday cupcakes: 50%
Saturday conference: 85%
Weekday conference: 75%
Ohio State & Xavier: 95%

What do others think??

I was at almost every home game; I'd guess more like:

Weekend cupcakes: actual attendance 80% of reported attendance
Weekday cupcakes: 70%
Saturday conference: 90%
Weekday conference: 85%
Ohio State & Xavier: 98%
