Title: Thank You Seniors
Post by: Da 'Lanche on March 06, 2014, 08:55:34 AM
As they prepare to play their last regular season home game, Let's hear it for our 4 seniors.    Thank you for representing our university with grace, class, dedication, commitment...sometimes re-commitment, integrity, diligence and the values that make our university special.   I, for one, will be proud to call you fellow alums.

Chris, I can't think of a more admirable or likeable young man to put on the MU uniform.   You overcame obstacles before even setting foot on campus and then persevered through major setbacks, injuries and doubts to finish your college career on the court.   Your influence and inspiration are a point of pride for the program.

Davante, who knew when you signed your LOI that you would have the type of career on the court that we have come to appreciate?   As a somewhat unheralded recruit, you became a special post player that, at times, took games over and carried the team on your back....simply unstoppable in certain situations.    You also seem to have a great sense of humor and are an active part of the Marquette community.  We wish you all the success you deserve as you move on from Marquette.

Jamil, I wish you would have spent your entire career at MU, but, thank you for choosing to come home.   That was a major statement in the state and you have been a welcome addition to the program.   I will never forget the huge 3s and impact you had last year in the tournament during our elite 8 run.   I am sure you must be disappointed with this year, but don't let it taint your entire career in an MU uniform...it was a pleasure to watch you play because of your sheer athleticism.   I will miss the sweeping rebounds, the blocked shots, the beautiful drives and the graceful runners.

Jake, thank you for bringing it every day.   You took the risk of transferring as a walk-on and ended up on scholarship, with a degree and with a starting role.   You have prooven that you belong in a high d-1 program and I have come to appreciate that is based purely upon your own drive, hard work and working with the talents you have to be the best you can be...which has helped our program this year more than anyone could have expected or anticipated.   I'm glad you chose to stay this last year at Marquette.

May God bless our senior class with peace, happiness and success on wherever their journeys take them...they will walk with our appreciation, gratitude and respect.

Cheers!

Yup--couldn't ask for a better group when it comes to accomplishing what they did individually with some obstacles; for a group that stuck to it every day even though sometimes maligned on this board, occasionally even by myself; for a group that played hard and contributed to two sweet 16's and an Elite 8, even though this year was bittersweet. Just too bad they cannot go out with another good run. Hope they all do well in the future, whatever God has in store for them.

Signed...

All of these guys have by all accounts been great ambassadors of the MU program during their time.  Thanks to them for all their effort, and all having played big roles in some of the most memorable MU seasons in the last 35 years.

Special shout out to Davante.  Thanks for just being you.  It has been a blast watching you do your thing at MU.  We may never see another one quite like you.

All the best to all of the guys as they make their way forward in life and hope their dreams come true.

Agreed - thank you seniors!

And let's all remember - this season isn't over yet. Regardless of what happens on Saturday, let's go burst some team's bubble in NYC!

Very nicely put, Willie. As fans we sometimes get frustrated, but these are our guys. Be proud of who they are and how they've represented Marquette. Always remember that as much as winning means to us it means infinitely more to them.

Well once Otule graduates Buzz will finally be alone as the longest tenured member of the MU basketball players/coaches. Hows that for perspective?

dittos-and for staying off the front page of the newspaper and on the sports page where they belong.  great group!  remember what davante weighed when he was a senior in high school and look at him now, jamil and jake-a couple of local boys do good, and chris overcoming some obstacles-great job!

They've worked far harder the past 4 (or 6) years than I have.

Gotta give it up to the guys that lay it all on the court! They are spending their time far more wisely than the old men spending their time posting on message boards :)

Crazy to think that this senior class has gotten to 3 Sweet 16's and the Elite 8 last year.

How insane would it be for them to hit a groove in New York and make it 4 Sweet 16's? I mean I know I'm dreaming here, but it's not impossible :)

Is this the thread that we bitch about the people who leave after the game on Senior Day and don't stick around for the tributes and speeches??

If not, I can't wait for that annual thread.

Thank you, Davante, for your wonderful years at MU. Truly one of the giants of the block at MU. The remarkable growth you've shown since your freshman year to the coming out of your shell via the hilarious Tweets are great memories of the past four years. I wish you the best as you take on the next rungs in your life ladder.

Thank you, Jamil, Jake, Chris, and Dylan.

Was thinking about this very thing when I happened upon this thread.

Jake - I've been down on you, it's part of Scoop history. There were a couple of game you lit up, and I had to eat crow. No ability to create a shot for yourself. When plays were run for you, mixed results - like any shooter, there were good days and bad days. Overall, however, how can one complain? You were a walk-on, you beat out other guys for minutes, and played pretty good D and worked your ass off.

Jamil - a mystery wrapped in an enigma. Jamil, you were probably a victim of our collective expectations. So good some nights, so MIA on others. Prone to fouls, limiting your effectiveness some nights. Hard to complain about a guy who's flirting with 1,000 career points. Watching closely, I never thought you slacked off, even on the bad nights.

Chris - what can you say? One eye, two broken feet, a torn ACL, six years with MU. There are not many more inspirational stories out there than yours, Chris. Fought for post-up position on every GD possession since the Reagan administration. Solidly anchored the D.

Ox - three stars, no stars, whatever. Came out of a Virginia backwater unheralded. When I first laid eyes on you, I understood why. Hard work, diet,
growing up. Loved your exuberance. Will remember more than anything else your absolutely uncanny ability to get the ball in the hole. Our offense will miss you greatly next year.

Good luck, seniors. Here's hoping that the work ethic you have demonstrated, along with the life lessons you have learned here will bring you the best in the future.

Hope the seniors realize you are like family to us. We share in your success and also those not so successful days. We are proud of each one of you for your sacrifices and maturity. We hope you learned more about life than basketball and we wish you all success in life. We have not always been the best of fans but you never gave up. You have earned our respect for you have character in victory and in loss. You are fine young men who will represent Marquette well in years to come. In my eyes you all showed an inner strength in the Providence game that is not seen often. You all taught us about determination in that game. That is much more meaningful than the score. Thank you. You kept the dream alive.

Plus one.

Treating our team like family us what generates the good and the bad comments.  Having the capacity to absorb the bad it's what makes the team part of the family.

People can leave if they want.

But if the brosefs from the upper deck stick around to boo Jake when it's his turn to speak, they will get hit by a beer bottle. I know this because I will have thrown the aforementioned beer bottle.

That's right! TAMU is back at MU for Senior Night! First home game of the season for me.

I will be there also. Hope I don't get in the way of the bottle. These seniors didn't have the season anyone hoped for, but their sacrifices and hard work over the past couple of years deserve nothing but cheers. Thank you, guys.

No need to worry TAMU. All the bros will be drinking exponential amount of alcohol at PCB.

The REAL important thing about these 4 guys - 2 on track to graduate in May, and 2 already graduated.  With or without basketball, they are positioned for success in life and their experience at MU will be the baseline for their success.  Well done to the program for making graduation important, and for making it actually happen.
