The Duke University freshman, who goes by the stage name Belle Knox, has defended her decision to enter the adult industry to fund her college tuition.
The Duke University freshman working her way through college as a porn star has revealed her face and stage name.
"My name is Belle Knox, and I wear my Scarlet Letter with pride," writes the student in a strong defence of her choice to enter the adult industry on XOJane.com.
Knox says she "didn't expect today to happen" but was forced to make her decision to reveal her porn name after being "harassed".
"Today, I'm going to officially reveal what my porn name is -- outside of the dregs of the Internet trying to bully me into using my birth name for porn, on message boards where comments like 'Her nose is bigger that her t---' or 'She deserves to be raped' are the common parlance -- and that is my choice to make," she writes.
Knox adds that she has been accused of bringing shame and embarrassment to Duke and been shunned by some of her closest friends.
She also claims fake Twitter accounts were created in her name and Tweets included threats to "kick you in the face".
Belle says she went to the police but was "immediately barraged with a line of insensitive, doubting questions".
She does not reveal her real name but tells critics to leave her family "alone".
The freshman was revealed as a porn star last month after she was spotted by a male classmate in a video.
Belle says that while she "started to be harassed" for working in porn, her fellow student "started to be applauded".
She defended her decision to do porn as a way of funding the $60,000-a-year tuition at the Top Ten school in North Carolina. Belle claims she is flown out to her film shoots, all expenses paid.
One estimate claims female porn stars can make up to $80,000-a-year if they do one scene a week.

Completely agree ... if you went through the freshman male dorms, how many of them are streaming porn? Maybe even her!!
What kid of "grief" will they get versus her? Are they embarrassing Duke too?

I'd go a little deeper into this on how a middle class person is screwed to help pay for college because supposedly they have means. That's one of her reasons for doing this and I cannot blame her.

She has said in other interviews that she received a full ride from Vanderbilt and passed it up for Duke. Pretty dumb move, if you ask me.

I have no problem with her doing this, but I find it pretty hilarious that the personal "abuse" she tells us she encounters for doing it is so bad that she feels the need to do interviews and internet postings to raise greater awareness of the fact that she is doing it.
She's either incredibly self-absorbed or great at personal marketing. I'd probably go with the latter.

It's both. She's playing the victim card while going on this absurd stump tour while almost entirely ignoring the fact that no one forced her to go to Duke.

Guess that explains why they tolerate it. Not going to be picky about who you can rake in $60k a year from and only have to return them with a women's studies degree.
