"My beef with that is guys like Mick Cronin and Buzz Williams (of Marquette) of the world, we deal with some of it," Cronin told ESPN after the game. "When nobody gets in the Jim Boeheim's face or Mike Krzyzewski's face."
Interesting that Buzz was a guy that came right to mind for him there.
If you watch the actual interview he's losing it a little not taking much accountability. During the game the ref did get in his face but also could have T'd him 6 times.
Thought it was interesting when watching the interview hear him name Buzz as one of the coaches like him who doesn't get the preferential treatment.
Buzz always had said great things about Cronin. Maybe they talk alot.

Ya, I assumed being in the same league together for 5 years they probably had some sort of relationship and respect
Cronin should have been ejected for the tantrum he threw today. The ref did not T him because he knew Cronin was deliberately trying to get T'd. It was obvious. I credit the referee for not allowing the coach's emotions dictate the game.
I recall Buzz once saying his closest friend among coaches of the old BE was Cronin.
Same hairstylist.
Seth Davis and Doug G talked about this during the Memphis/Louisville game. Said Cronin was upset, but that Teddy V was in the wrong (no surprise) for walking up to and getting in Cronin's face. I have to agree based on the video. They said when Teddy realized he had done something wrong, he wouldn't give a T.

And Cronin is correct that there is no way that Teddy does that to Boeheim or Coach K. Teddy V. escalated the situation and was in the wrong.

Right but then he walked away while Cronin continued his outburst up and down the sideline. He didn't stop for about 5 minutes. And after it all cooled down you see them causally talking as the game goes on an the camera catches Cronin yelling 'That's bullshit' as he walked away.
At that point his team had scored 4 points 11 minutes into the 2nd half. He was obviously frustrated.

LOL.
There is no excuse for Valentine getting in his face like that. None.
I didn't really have much problem with Valentine anyways.
It was the way that he quickly turned to get into Cronins face that made it look worse. If you watch you see once hes in his face he is basically just listening to Cronin yet his ear off.
It wasn't like in a bunch of MLB situations where the ump gets in the player/coaches face and goes just as beserk.
Jeff Garcia is still coaching Cincinnati? I thought he moved to NFL Network.
It seems there's an increasing lack of accountability among NCAA basketball referees this year. Some are buying into the new rules, some are not. The new rules themselves don't lead to much consistency, either. Some refs blatently misbehave like Jim Burr and this incident with Cronin yet they get away with it. There needs to be a formal system of fines and salary reductions for refs who miss calls and change game outcomes, with results announced weekly.
They also need to pass a fitness test, to ensure they can run down the court fast enough to make a call from the correct position. If this were in place, problems like Jim Burr would already be eliminated.

I think you meant
closest friend.
Buzz has not gotten very many technicals, but he has gotten some weird ones. Like one for slipping and falling on the floor last year. I doubt they would of called that one on Boheim or Coach K.

I agree with your whole point but as I said I don't think in this case Valentine was that wrong. It looked more aggressive initially but he let Cronin have his word the whole time. Also, at least it was the right call.
Cronin also did vogue for Valentine as being a great ref and wished he was in the BE all those years.

Diagree, i think valentine didnt T him because he relized he had screwed up big time too. Kudos to valentine for relizing he made a mistake n not escalating everything. His best call after that was to not T him. Looks like he spoke with him as the game went on. They should both get a fine or a warning

I just saw the replay and no way that happens to "Bowhine" or K.

That is a good point Bilsu--he hasn't received a bunch of technical, and that one where he slipped was BS by the ref--although he does spend a lot of time out of the box, so maybe that was a makeup.
Sometimes you might wonder if taking a T now and then might help the team. Some of the great Coaches hae done that--Knight and Al come to mind. Although they did not always seem to help.

Yeah if Teddy did it to K, K's nose and snarl would knock Teddy over, and then there would be a racism dialogue established.

Agreed completely.
I actually think Valentine should be disciplined. That was totally uncalled for. I also think part of the problem is Cronin's stature. He looks like Scott Hamilton. Nobody is going to get in Boeheim's face because he's 6'4". Knight had a similar presence. He was a huge guy.
Incidentally, I'll never forget meeting McGuire at Al's Run and being shocked at how big he was.

Not that there is anything wrong with either
