Title: JJJ versus JA, DWill and STj Freshman Years
Post by: Tugg Speedman on February 28, 2014, 11:01:10 AM
JJJ was DNP for the third game in a row yesterday.  Judging from his body language, I think he did not expect to play.

I hope he is not frustrated and looking to transfer to Memphis.  I looked at some current players freshman year.  JJJ playing time this year (yes different position) is comparable to Dwill, JA and STj.  No reason to believe he cannot be a 30 minute a game player by his junior year.

I hope he sees it this way.

JJJ this year (through 25 games)
DNP 5 games (including the last three)
total minutes 281
total points 88

Juan Anderson's Freshman year (34 games)
DNP 10 games
total minutes 109
total points 16 points

Steve Taylor's Freshman Year (35 games)
DNP 0 games
total minutes 301 minutes
total points 105

Derrick Wilson's freshman year (34 games)
DNP 2 games
total minutes 292 minutes
total points 20

Great comparison for the JJJ is going to transfer crowd. Also because i know people are going to say "He was a top 100 recruit" so were Juan and Steve..

According to RSCI, Johnson was #30, Taylor Jr was #82 and Anderson was #81. D Wilson was not a Top 100 recruit.

Who knows if he will transfer or not, but I would assume JJJ is frustrated about his lack of playing time.

And Davante was only a 2 star. Rankings mean nothing.

Did they stop teaching Logic at Marquette?

Top 100 is a bit of a reach. JJJ was a top 40 recruit, big difference, Juan and Steve were towards the back end of the list. Put simply, he's not better than the players ahead of him. I was critical of Thomas early, but he's been very good since he started playing "loose". Thomas, Mayo and Gardner have carried the team during this winning streak. All 3 of them need to play 30 minutes a game, which doesn't leave anything for JJJ. If he wants to transfer when 30MPG opens up then on to the next...he needs to put 15lbs on his frame to play.

Hard to play more than 10 players, the frosh all have lost time at the end of the year.  Wait till next year when they have 13, hard to keep them all happy.  Have to do it on the court, he has had
chances, but get better, comeback next year and compete.

Why does he need to put on 15lbs? I haven't seen his frame be an issue this year have you? He's got a wiry kind of body type but I haven't seen it be an issue this season.

Well I can tell you who wont play. Shayok, Pierce once Fisher is eligible, either Dawson or Du. Wilson, Cohen and Harris.

My guess is he will play the "3" for Buzz. That position has been held by Juan, Mayo and Lockett the last couple of years. Guys much stronger than JJJ. It matters on defense, not sure if you've ever played basketball, but to state the obvious, strength is a hug part of defending. Which is why I was never good at it....

I don't think the current rules allow you to hug when defending  ;D

JJJ isn't playing much because Jake is playing incredibly well.  Shooting 46% from deep over his last 5 games.

His 25 minutes are opening up next year.  If JJJ wants those minutes, he has to work hard this summer to earn them.

Opportunity is there if he wants it.
