Tyshawn Taylor commits to MU
Tyshawn Taylor, a 6-foot-3 1/2-inch combination guard from St. Anthony's in Jersey City, N.J., has given an oral commitment to play at MU next season, he said on Monday night.
Taylor committed just a day after returning from an official visit to MU over the weekend.
"I felt like I've been knowing where I've wanted to go like since Saturday, Sunday night," he said. "I just wanted to come home and get my coach's blessings and my family's blessings, and I got that. So I feel refreshed and comfortable now, and I know I made the right choice."
A native of Hoboken, N.J. who now lives in Jersey City, Taylor had scholarship offers from Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech and Kansas, and had been offered a scholarship by North Carolina within the last day. Prior to visiting MU, he had also visited Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech.
Ultimately, though, he said he felt most at home at MU for a number of reasons.
"It's definitely a basketball school. You don't find too many colleges without a football team," he said. "That's cool to me. The coaching staff is unbelievable. I love the coaching staff. I love them a lot. The basketball at the school is at a high level, and I'm used to playing at a high level at my high school. Marquette plays just like my high school, so I feel like it's not that big of a transition from high school to college playing ball because I'm used to playing that style."

awesome news! 8)
wow... awesome news indeed!! Welcome to the team Tyshawn!!
Holy Sweet! This might be MUScoop newsletter worthy!
to give Crean and his staff the props they deserve for getting the commitment of the best available point guard. I said a couple of days ago that I like this cat and my prediction is that he will be one of the best 1 guards to ever wear a Warrior's uniform.
wow, this is fantastic news. our guard woes--if we even truly had any--are pretty much solved. time to get a big man (as usual) now.
Welcome to Marquette, Tyshawn!

good call 4ever.....a terrific job by TC
Great news.
Amazing how he grew 1 1/2" after Crean measured him.
How many people do you know have a big disappointment in their job and keep right on working. Yes, Crean is a very good recruiter.
Great great news!
Now lets go Pack!
YEAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!
So I think he was texting (in the pic) to Coach Hurley:
"Marquette. This is where I want to be."
Thank God he put to shame my earlier comments!
But we haven't had good recruiting news for a long time! :D
Now let's go get a BIG MAN!
GO BRONCOS! ;)
Great job by Crean and staff!
Love the news of this commit. I had completely figured this as a lost cause.
IMO, this is like missing out on Frasor to end up with Dominic. Not sure who originally started saying that, but props.
The real need is still some sort of inside presence. And the KS scrimmage only showcased that need.

Really? Tell me what you saw at that game to make you say that?
After the Iman comments around his decision, I absolutely love this comment from Tyshawn...
"I'm a competitor. I compete. I'm definitely going to earn my playing time. Anything I get is going to be earned," he said. "I'm definitely confident that my playing time is going to be there. If I didn't think I could play, we wouldn't be having this conversation. I definitely do think I can play and be a contributor."

"Junior guard Dominic Cheek may be the most talented of the group. He appears to be leaning toward North Carolina, but Taylor said he's now working on getting him to come to Marquette.
"Now that I'm committed, I'm trying to get him to go to Marquette," Taylor said. "I would definitely like that."

Let's hope we can get 2 for 1!
One other thing this shows is Buzz Williams' immediate impact on the program. Two commits in one week that he and Crean delivered. Yeah they lost Shumpert, but they went out and got the best other player out there. Nice job.

Already having Eric Williams for 09 is great, adding Dominic Cheek would make it awesome, throw in a similarly ranked big, and I think I'd be buying a few rounds of drinks that day!

I'm not sure what Scout has him ranked at, but if I'm reading this correctly, Rivals has him as the 12th best player in the 2009 class, a five star blue-chipper. Please please PLEASE, Tyshawn, we love having you here, but do a little legwork with your buddy Dominic and we'll love you all the more!

I had the same thought. Hopefully this works out as well for us as it has with DJ. This kid has good size, played in a great HS program, and best of all had the good sense to pick Marquette!
When it comes to recruits, its kind of like the Yankees and A-Rod. Just like the Yankees don't want a player who doesn't want to be a part of their team, I don't want recruits who don't WANT to wear Blue&Gold. This kid sounds like he buys into what Marquette and Marquette basketball are all about. Good luck to him. Great news.
I love this - we're starting to do what great teams do - reload.
We have replacements for the big three with excellent talent in Taylor, Williams, Williams, and Christopherson. Now we just need some big men to go along with it, and I don't see us having much - if any - of a drop-off after James, Matthews and McNeal leave. Crean and staff have put us in a much better situation than after the final four run when the cupboard was practically bare (aside from Diener and Novak, of course). Just goes to show how much Crean learned from that situation.
I love that Taylor is going to recruit Cheek, but Cheek is most likely a pipedream. That said, IF Marquette landed Cheek, MU would be a preseason top 5 team two years from now and a legit national title contender.
Acker
Christopherson
Cubillian
Hayward
Mbakwe
Taylor
N. Williams
E. Williams
Cheek (?)
Otule (?)
That would be a 10 men rotation (while heavy on 1-3's) that would be deep and tough to beat.
we're are not even on his interest list, what would make any of you think he would come to MU?

Taylor knows Cheek and had a quote earlier in this thread saying that he'd be talking up MU to his buddy, Cheek.

Agreed - doesn't hurt to have Tyshawn in his ear, but I doubt it will make much of a difference (though I hope so!).
Nick Williams was trying to convince his AAU teammate 5-star Jamychal Green to go to MU but that didn't work out. At least Green previously had Marquette in his interest list.
Cheek hasn't ever listed MU, so it's a long shot, but we can dream :)
lets take things one recruit at a time here. Taylor looks like he is a great ball player, and with he and Williams in the backcourt together from 2008-?? it looks like MU will have dominating guards for some time. now lets just get some big men to compliment those guards

Screw that, I can multi task! ;D
Wow...glad we got Taylor!!!! Now lets get a big guy.
Cheek had no reason to be on the list before. It sounds like Tyshawn and him are good friends. McNeil's job will be open. He has 5 Big East teams on his list, so he has an interest in playing in the Big East.
I think we ought to be looking for quality bigs instead----have enough guards.
BTW, why would a teammate want to follow another teammate when the both play essentiially the same position?
Tyshaun plays point and Cheeks plays 2. McNeal, Matthews and James will be gone. Acker and Culliban will be seniors.
Acker-senior
Culliban-senior
Christopherson-Junior
Williams-sophomore
Taylor-sophomore
Cheeks-freshmen
You need to recruit at least one guard every year.

.........and at least one power position.
I dunno........Cheek is national top 10, that's tough. It seems more reasonable that MU could land up Maurice Creek rather than Dominic Cheek. I'd take that.
