Title: Thanks to MU Scoop Moderators
Post by: NersEllenson on February 24, 2014, 06:33:52 PM
In a somewhat ironic and funny stat....the MU Scoop thread on BrewCity Ball has more replies to it than any other recent topic on that board other than the DePaul game thread.

Funny, there is a guy over there ripping our Mod - Hilltopper - who made a few nice posts on that site - for "washing his hands of responsibility" over moderating this site more heavy handedly.

Find it laughable that a poster there would take shots at the Mods here - who provide a GREAT forum for MU fans, charge nothing for it, and use their free time to keep the site up and running, moderate at certain points etc...and the poster doesn't have to nor doesn't post here - so why get worked up over MUScoop??

I'd say the moderation style here has been perfect - 1st amendment applies - its a free country, speech shouldn't be censored...so long as it isn't racially charged, hateful, discriminatory.  And, the posting activity and membership count here suggest that their decision on how to moderate this board has been the right one.

So, thanks Mods for providing a great platform, and allowing for free speech to prevail - from one of your more controversial posters.   ;D

I post early and often. Gotta say this site is the tits. Pretty much you can do whatever here from kickin' it to body slams and its all good. As for other forums related to Warrior BB, they'll ban ya for common sense thoughts like "Crean farts in the bathtub."
BTW, Crean sucks.

I enjoyed Brews posts on scoop.  It's too bad he left.

This board has gone nuts at time with excessive Buzz bashing, the whole Derrick/Dawson thing, ad naseum.  The vast majority on this board does not engage in that crap.  The few that do...

I much prefer this site at the end of the day.  Just wish some posters would stop making the same point over and over and....

By the way, does anyone know what happened to Doc Bheart?  Haven't seen him post in a few months.

Brew certainly posted a lot on Scoop, and much of it was quality.  But then he began to believe that since he was such a HUGH contributor, he should have a say in running the place, and started bullying people.  You win some you lose some.

Not really sure what happened there.  It appears he disagreed with hilltopper calling him out.  Didn't seem like an unreasonable conversation, but he decided to end "the relationship"

For some of the noobs here, let me cover a few things.

Feel free to talk about and link to Dodd's scout site, and IWB's site.  The more information the Marquette community has the better.  Google can get you to these places but I'll even help you out....

http://marquette.scout.com/

http://www.brewcityball.com/

If they have something interesting to point out, feel free to link to them here.  They may not have the same rules, so check with them before you link back to us when posting on their forums.

I do take issue with anyone that calls the moderators here negligent.  MUScoop averaged 19+ posts per hour for January.  Think about it, that's like 19 text messages every hour of the day in January (14,628 for the whole month), and we're somehow supposed to make sure that not a single one of them offends anybody.  (Sorry Derrick, you were probably the most offended, but on the other hand you were also the most defended...).

Oh right, and nobody here is making money off this.  We are now displaying ads to the anybody that doesn't log into the site.  Optimistically I'm hoping that covers half of our costs.  I'll have a better picture of it once we get into the off-season.

Those that like to complain, I think the rest of the mods would agree that if someone else could setup a site where Marquette fans were comfortable talking freely, we'd happily disappear into the night.  I mean, sure we've have to give up our private jets, but .... oh right, we're just fans of Marquette basketball too.

Go Warriors.  (yeah, yeah, Golden Egols...)

Thanks for reposting that thread.

There was nothing outrageous in that thread.   Doc seems to disagree.

You have to take scoop for what it is.  Sometimes you have to have thick skin.  Some people you put on ignore.  Most often, it's lots of fun.  Besides, I hear they have a really good fishing thread.  Brew City doesn't have one of those. :o

Doc and Brew were good contributors.

Anyone that gets angry enough about a website/community to quit that community in a huff of nerd-rage needs to reevaluate how much time they spend on the Internet.

A bunch of anonymous old men talking about a game on the Internet shouldn't get you worked up.

Religious intolerance? Hardly.

It is making light of the other guy's religious and cultural intolerance. If Brew 77 or whatever he goes by spent one second in the Sandbox he would know that "Pork Eating Crusader" is part of the hateful polemic used by the Taliban for Coalition Forces. I'm not surprised a simpleton wouldn't grasp the irony.

Pork Eating Crusader is what the Taliban call us. They use this in their propaganda daily. It is intended to be a derisive slur against Western culture and values to engender animosity and violence against our troops, UN staff, and NGO aid workers.

Brew thinks it's insensitive? Tell him to take it up with the Taliban because they invented the term.

What is offensive is that the Taliban kill Moslem women and children who do not subscribe to their perverse brand of Islam. What is offensive are the Taliban who kill apolitical foreign aid workers who are only trying to help the people of Afghanistan. What is offensive are the Taliban who blow up UN facilities because they consider UN-sponsored education, health, economic, and agriculture programs to be impure.

Pork Eating Crusader is a term used by the Taliban for Coalition Forces and other western entities in the "Caliphate." It was not invented by Americans or Brits or Swiss or anyone from outside of the Taliban.

Look at the websites bitching about the patches - they are the same ones advocating random, violent death to western people and culture. Fact is, Brew City is using it as a red herring. He's a blow hard.

Someone can find the patch offensive no matter the backstory and no matter what the Taliban do in the name of their brand of Islam.

This is very similar to the use of the "n-word" by African Americans as a way to "own" the insult.  Many African Americans think it is fine...others are offended.  So I can see why Muslim-Americans would be offended by such a patch as representative of their armed forces.

This is very similar to the use of the "n-word" by African Americans as a way to "own" the insult.  Many African Americans think it is fine...others are offended.  So I can see why Muslim-Americans would be offended by such a patch as representative of their armed forces.

If people are offended by the patch I wonder how they feel about how the Taliban go about their business everyday?

Your patch is not offensive, knowing the background.

Understandably, if someone did not know the true meaning and history of the patch, one could mis-interpret the meaning of the patch.

Morale of the story....don't criticize something or make assumptions until you have all the facts.

Anyone ever try making Real Chili with ground pork?  Bet it is damn good!

As a Pork Eating Crusader I will confirm that proper chili must include ground pork. I like Real Chili but having roots in Santa Fe will admit to preferring mine green.

Again, I am not sure why you are connecting the two.  It is perfectly reasonable for people to be offended by  "how the Taliban go about their business," as well as the patch.

And to be clear, I am not offended.  But I can see why others might be.

Ok, I'll bite. What, exactly, is offensive about the patch?

So let me see if I am getting this.  The Taliban call us (Westerners) "pork-eating crusaders" in an attempt to disparage us.  We, in turn, take this nickname and adopt it with pride, brandishing it on the sleeves of our military.

Who is offended?  Non-pork-eating members of the US military?

I don't understand either. What is offensive? Pork eating crusader? Who is supposed to be offended?

There is so much PC BS out there that people get confused about what is offensive and what isn't...and you know why? Because nobody is offended!

I think you are smart enough to figure out why some Muslims would be offended by the in-your-face nature of the patch, including the word crusader.

Look, I am not going to debate whether or not someone *should* find it offensive.  If you want to keep it in your signature, I am hardly going to complain about it - I have never suggested that you remove it.

I hid signatures years ago.  i forget why, but it was something NSFW that I felt I was better off w/o them and haven't looked back.

Enemy polemic is a strange beast. Western Power imagery of the Japanese was simian. Germans were cast as letter day Huns. Fascist Italy used images of American Gangsters to portray the GI's landing on Sicily.

There is a great scene in Private Ryan where Tom Hanks and Ted Danson are taking cover in the rain while a German is screaming in a loudspeaker, "The Statute of Liberty is Kaput!" Hanks wry quip in reply is classic, "Well, that's disconcerting..."

My response when I first heard that the Taliban were calling us "Pork Eating Crusaders" was to laugh. And I can assure Sultan that, unlike the "N-Word," not one Coalition troop, UN staffer, or humanitarian aid worker was the least bit offended by such a stupid bit of wartime diatribe. In fact, it is so absurd an image that it was embraced.

RAF and USAAC crews were belittled by name in broadcasts by Axis Sally and Lord Haw Haw. Their response? Irreverent Crew Dogs painted the silly expressions on their aircraft.

Fact is, no one is actually offended by Pork Eating Crusader. It is a Red Herring.

I think the new alternate cap (http://www.sportingnews.com/mlb/story/2014-02-24/lehigh-valley-ironpigs-bacon-logo-scented-t-shirt-scratch-and-sniff-phillies-philadelphia-allentown) for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs would be more subtle.
