Jesmu, you are wound kinda tight...maybe u should imbibe once in awhile! And FYI I haven't had a drink in 9 years.
I'll defend MUBuzz here because I think fans discussing who they believe to be the MVP of the season is a legitimate topic of debate. Just an extension of the SOTG polls that we do after every win.
MUbuzz, the reason everyone jumped on this so quick is because you have been so focused as of late about the shortcomings of Derrick Wilson that the assumption by other posters is that you were going to use this thread to further your anti-Derrick Wilson narrative. This technique was been used by many a poster on Scoop. The most recent example was the ill-fated "Who should start, Derrick or Dawson?" poll started by Ners about a month ago. The results favored Dawson 2 to 1 I believe. Ners then used that poll in every single thread for the next two weeks. "2/3 of Marquette fans see that Dawson should start. It must be true!"
Gardner because he's more consistent than the others. He's our go to guy.
How about nobody?
Here's why.... let's look at the goals for this season:
1) Find a point guard who can score.
2) Win one early season game against a highly regarded, highly ranked opponent.
3) Beat Wisconsin
4) Enter the Big East season strong.
5) Win the Big East
6) Be competitive in the Big East tournament
7) Make the NCAA tournament
8) Win at least one NCAA game.
Of this group, the only one that's possible is the Big East tournament. They missed on every other goal. Just like no stud when we lose, no stud of the season when we fail to meet our objectives.
I refuse to vote for Gardner with the way he's pouted and has mailed in halfs and entire games, so I went with jamil.
The real question is who will the team select as MVP and I was already thinking about that. I just do not think Jamil and Gardner have performed to expectations, so I think the MVP will be Derrick. I do think an argument can be made for Mayo, but given who Buzz likes best it is Derrick.
Anyone find a good site to buy some good fake Gucci or Louis?

Who made that list? I sure hope the team didn't, and I know I personally as a fan didn't. Beat Wisconsin as a specific season goal? Wow. We are a small time program if that's the case. Win the Big East but then only win 1 NCAA Tournament game? We must also be in a small time conference if we're just hoping for 1 NCAA Tournament win out of our conference winner. And finding a point guard who could score was never a season goal. It was finding a point guard who could run the offense and be productive. The point guard position only became an issue because other positions have failed to meet expectations, so we've looked at the point guard, who we originally expected not to be much of a scorer and had no problem with going into the season, and saw that he wasn't scoring so we said, "Hey, you can't win when your point guard can't score." The fact of the matter is if Jamil, Davante, and Todd consistently scored/played up to their capabilities and if Juan, Steve, and Jake progressed like everyone expected them to, everybody would be applauding Derrick for the job he has done at the point. When those 6 players have not met our expectations, then the 1 player who has gets looked upon in a different light and we say he needs to bring more.

Wow. It is posts like this that continue to perpetuate the topic...and like the points made the other day by Tamu and Bilsu - that it isn't a big deal for Derrick Wilson and Otule to miss free throws, because the team doesn't expect them to make them. I mean really?? Missed FT's no longer hurt a team depending on who shoots them??? It is this length of excuse making that some here make to defend poor performance that drives some of us crazy, and therefore instigates a continued discussion.
Why would anybody applaud the leading minute getter on the team shooting 47% from the FT line, 7% from the 3pt line, having made 1, 3pt shot in 26 games, while watching the opposition defense sag 8' off of Derrick and pack the paint, thereby making life hell for Jamil and Davante, and even a penetrating wing like Todd...while averaging 5.7ppg in 30.3 minutes per game? But yeah, the fact of the matter is this season is a waste due to Jamil, Davante and Todd (who just now is getting the PT he deserves) not playing to their capabilities. The real fact of the matter is they can't play to their abilities because they are playing with a PG that commands ZERO respect defensively. Period. End of story. The proof is in the team's record. It aint working, and that's the only thing that's been constant about this team and the rotation/playing time - Derrick getting max minutes. Everything else has been tried/tweaked/adjusted.
One of the most unfortunate things about this board is that we continue to blame all our problems on our point guard play. The fact is, as the previous poster pointed out, our breakdown this year has been consistent. Across the board.. everyone let us down. That's the point as to why I think there is NO stud of the season.
D Wilson is getting a lot more blame than he deserves. If he had a consistent team around him, he would look very different. I agree that Davante hasn't played as we hoped and Jamil has some games where he looks a little like the next Michael Jordan and others where he looks like the next Lloyd Moore.
As for Wisconsin, it's one goal. Ask a Tar Heel what his goal would be and he's tell you, "Beat Duke... twice!" Ask Packers fans what their goals for the season are and the Super Bowl will be only mildly more important than beating the Bears. A true Cardinals fan will expect to win the World Series but also to take 16 out of 16 from the Chicago Cubs.
As to winning more than one tournament game, even if we did make it -- and we won't -- do you really think we can win at all? We would be a 12th seed and likely play a 4 seed. We haven't beaten a four seed quality team all season.

I'm just saying that if these were the goals set at the start of the season then they are pretty weak. If a goal was to win the Big East, then another goal should've been making, say, the Elite 8 and having a shot at a Final Four. In hindsight of course a goal now is to win an NCAA Tournament game, because that means we're in it. But going into the season, being Big East favorites, I was expecting more than 1 win in the NCAA Tournament.
As far as beating a rival, of course that is something I want to do every year. But I don't make it a season goal. It doesn't make or break a season, define the success of a season. It's all about the post season. I'd love for the Brewers to lose every game to the Cubs and Cardinals this year and win the World Series. I loved when the Bears won the NFC North in 2010...only to have the Packers come into Soldier Field en route to a Super Bowl. It's always nice to dominate a rival, but it's even better to watch them lose early (or miss) in the postseason while my team is making a deep run.
I, as a fan, tend to hang my hat on making the NCAA tournament...my guess is that most have that as the highest level "win". Some years it could be sweet-16 depending on expectatons. But there are other things that make a season enjoyable.
I think the expectation thing is a big factor for any one of us. I had an expectation that we would make the NCAA tourney. Not win the BE...(I knew pundits we phoning that prediction in)...not even finish 2nd. For me enjoying MU basketball is all about winning big games; exciting close wins at home when I'm at the game (against anybody); good quotes from Buzz; beating Wisconsin; and seeing if my son gets TV time while in the pep-band. So I've enjoyed the season some.
But, for me, the expectation that judges the entire season is that NCAA Tourney thing. I'm hanging on it right now...and realistically I feel like we're outside looking in.
