Title: Tickets Sales For Creighton
Post by: Tugg Speedman on February 18, 2014, 01:02:36 PM
Does anyone know what kind of crowd we can expect?  Xavier was a sell-out (or close enough).  I understand that Wednesday night games are not the same as Saturday games.  Anyone care to guess?

If I had to guess a lot of people here are going to be really disappointed with the turnout. Students are trying to sell their tickets for really cheap in the facebook . Its just really a bad time for a game during a week where there a lot of tests. I dont know who does the scheduling but they really need to do a better job at scheduling the marquee games like tomorrow.

You can use the Ticketmaster interactive seat map to see just how many seats remains unsold. I would estimate between 500-700 unsold tickets.

Yep, the Marquette Ticket Exchange has 2 pages of tickets listed for under $20.

This game will be lightly attended.

Stubhub has 65 and a handful are very cheap, I'm guessing under face value, get in the door priced. I'm coming up for the game tomorrow and was able to nab a couple good seats for a very fair price for the game.

Making sure that students schedules are free enough so they can attend the games is probably the least of the scheduling concerns.

Not saying that but midweek game vs. Creighton when the Big East knew Creighton was going to be good? Cmon, now.

Yeah, those midweek games are tough. With all that hot Olympics coverage, why would a network want a decent matchup to show?

I'm pretty well-versed on these sort of things and by taking a look at the stub/exchange/TM, I believe it will be better attended than you guys think... especially for a weekday game.

The lower bowl will be very full.  Secondary prices are still pretty high for lowers and there are not many out there.

Uppers... I'm not sure who shows up, but the upper bowl is well sold for a weekday game.

Can't speak on behalf of the student attendance, but I'd hope they'd take 3 hours out of their night to go to the biggest game of the year.

This game is a chance to see the NATIONAL Player of the Year with Dougie McBuckets.  That has only happened ONCE at the Bradley Center, and it was fifteen years ago.

On 2/1/99, a bad sub-500 MU team upset #4 Cincy with Kenyon Martin... I was a student then, and it was the highlight of a rough year.

Sidenote... that year (1999-2000) was the last year which students had random assigned seats before student-seating turned to GA.  The Cincy upset was the first game all season where the ushers checked your ticket stubs.  It still annoys me that I was relegated to the upper bowl despite going to nearly every home game unlike 95% of the student body that brutal season.   Albeit obvious, the switch to GA student sections was a great move.

I'm a season ticket holder living in Chicago and I'm thinking about making my first weekday game. With the 5 o'clock train getting in at 6:45 it's very doable

I don't think you really understand what goes into scheduling. They have to take into account:

1) Bucks Games
2) Admirals Games
3) Bradley Center concerts

And that's just for MU games. You also have to account for your opponents schedules as they play a roll in setting the conference schedule. Even the schools that don't play in an NBA arena often have Women's BB games etc to work around.

You really think they are also going to consider when student's test cycles fall? Especially when not all profs schedule tests at the same time? That's a little naive.

Not to mention we're talking about zero difference in student ticket sales.  So now we're attempting to exert our influence on scheduling games not based on television, ticket sales or revenue impact, but based on the likelihood that the cheapest seats that are already sold will be used.  The value of that is what exactly?  The chance a camera catches the upper level and makes it look bad on television...nothing compared to some of our conference mates that actually go as far as to make the broadcast depressing to see because it's obvious nobody is there in every shot.  Or that Creighton will be far less intimidated when they see an empty upper deck, causing them to coast to a win?

A little perspective .. last year, we played #11 ranked Syracuse on a Monday .. attendance: 16,000 .. and we were having a BE-championship type season.

I imagine the Creighton fans driving up would be minimal for a Wednesday night game.

I will go with 15,500 announced.

Gotta remember .. the people on this board are super-fans.  They were likely already going to the game.  The # of student tickets sold doesn't change, so they aren't a factor.

Attendance bumps up when the casual, non season-ticket holder MU fan decides to go.  They aint doing that on a Wednesday, during an off-the-bubble season .. enough to fill the building.

For me, basketball games were a priority as a student. I really enjoyed going to them as a student (even though the team was bad for 3 of my 4 years at MU). I based my study schedule around games, particularly marquee games. Obviously not every student feels that way and I wouldn't question someone for not making it a priority to attend basketball games. Having said that, undergrads using studying as an excuse to not being able to do things is pretty weak.

College students are awake at least 16-18 hours a day. They're in class for 3-4 hours a day and many work another 3-4 hours a day (though not all do). That leaves about 10 hours for studying per day (not including at least 30 waking hours over the weekend). I'm sorry but if you can't get your studying done and have enough time to engage in other activities, then you're either in the wrong major or you need to greatly improve your time management skills.

In other words, studying schmudying!

Not everyone cares about the team? You have better things to do? Might catch a few minutes?

But you post on the message board about a team you imply you don't care about and at the very least by your own admission rank it very low on the priorities list?

ok.

Just saying there are reasons people don't go to games.  I went to the Xavier game. I had a great time. This week the creighton game doesn't fit the schedule. Otherwise I would try to go. Announced crowd?  I'll take the over on 16,500. More likely 17,500.  And I bet the joint's rockin'.

I hope your right,  17,500 or better tomorrow night would increase our average attendance by 141 (16 home games) to 15,374 from 8th to 6th all-time.

Then we have two remaining home games.  Georgetown Thursday Feb 27 and St. Johns Saturday March 8th.

 * GU is always a big draw for us.  The last three times they played in Milwaukee we drew at least 19,000 each game.  http://www.muscoop.com/index.php?topic=36039.msg449465#msg449465

* St. Johns is the last home game of the year and it's a Saturday.  The last game is also a big draw too.

If we win tomorrow and whip up a bit of excitement about this year's team making the tourney, I could see this year's average attendance breaking into the top 3.  That would happen if we averaged 17,500 the next three home games, then we would finish the year around 15,630 average attendance.

Again, doable if we win tomorrow and get some excitement cooking.

----------------------

Top 10 average attendance years

1. 2008 16,239
2. 2009  16,200
3. 2010  15,617
4. 2011  15,586
5. 2003  15,553
6. 2007  15,345
7. 2004   15,291
8. 2014  15,233 (season not over)
9. 2012  15,138
10. 2013 15,033

Based off what I see online, I'd be willing to put a decent amount of money on the over for 15,500 announced.  Not sure how many will actually show.

Also, this is Creighton's dream season and they do have a rabid fanbase (recently demonstrated by selling out the BET allotment first.)  While they may not drive up from Omaha, I'd guess many hoop-loving Creighton alum in Chicagoland will see this as an easy opportunity to attend with a 7pm tipoff.  It's late in the season, and many likely won't have another shot to see McDermott again.

Does McDermott complain to officials every time someone gets within two feet of him when he shoots or did he just do that in the game against marquette. He sure whined a lot in that game

It's probably a combination of perception and reality: Doug whines some, and others (mostly opposing fans) think he's a huge whiner because he already has so many things going his way as it is, so he shouldn't be whining at all in the first place.

Was that based on a the few minutes you were able to catch?

In truth, Doug does whine just like every other player. The thing about him is he has so much movement off the ball that he will honestly get absolutely mugged sometimes with no call. On other occasions he will fall to draw a call and will complain when he doesn't get. He's just like any other player where you are outraged he didn't get a call when its warranted and there are other times where you just want to tell him to get up and keep playing. Again, no different than any other player.

Seems like a fair assessment... I've watch a few Jays games this year (including ones I was rooting for Creighton) and couldn't help, but notice how often he plays to the officials.  He's still a ridiculous talent and often there is contact... his talk and body language does seem over the top at times though.

A little perspective .. last year, we played #11 ranked Syracuse on a Monday .. attendance: 16,000 .. and we were having a BE-championship type season.

Syracuse was on a Monday at 6pm with the marquee pricing. Creighton is at 7pm, with normal Big East pricing. I like your guess!

I was shocked last year that Syracuse was 16,049. The building was almost full for that game and very loud.

The Ticketmaster site shows 580 tickets still remaining.  It's that's true, expect an announced crowd over 18,000.  No-shows are obviously another story.
For some reason, ticketmaster doesn't list all of the tickets for Marquette games.

Not to go all "when I was a kid" on anybody, but ...

There is absolutely no way I would have missed this game when I was a student ... no matter how much it would have cut into my time at the bars!

Based on this and your posting history, doesn't seem like much would be lost if you swan dive onto 43 northbound from the Wells Street bridge.

D'aww. Thank you. <3

I really appreciate all of you. You are some of the kindest, most thoughtful, smart, and least aggressive people I've ever had the pleasure of talking to.

Edit: I'm sure Marquette will miss the 25,000 that I'm paying to be here though. They always find neat little ways to siphon and squeeze every penny out of a person.

I hope your joking.
No, I am afraid that he is not. I just had a student practically hand me his ticket and copied it out for me to take so it would go to good use.

He has tests all day and the next day and can't go. It is a poorly scheduled game. But it is what it is...

Youre not understanding my point im saying Creighton vs MU should have been a weekend game. Im know nobodys going to care about test cycles. I know I dont. The fact that this game isnt on a weekend was the problem for me.

They can't put all the good games on weekends...Fox wants good match-ups for the week as well.

My comment of joking was about that Wednesday night is a bad night for a game. Should basketball be played only on Saturday's.

For comparison .. the last 6 "big" weekday games' attendance:

Last season we played #11 Syracuse on a Monday .. 16,009.
Monday - Jan 2011 on a Monday .. #9 Notre Dame 16,951.
Monday Jan 25, 2011 - #5 Uconn - 15,476
Wed - January 6, 2010 - #13 Georgetown - 15,984
Thurs - February 18, 2010 - #19 - Pittsburgh - 16,486
Wed - March 3, 2010 - Louisville - 16,281

No way does Creighton draw more than Notre Dame, so 16,951 would be a logical maximum guess.

15,500-16,000 for tonight is my guess.

I think it'll be over 16,500.  Wednesday is a better night than Monday.  Plus the weather's good and the roads are clear.

From an overall tickets sold perspective, I suspect that MU likes having some of the marquee games on weeknights. Attendance at weekend games is generally pretty high regardless of opponent.

Saturday games
DePaul: 15,194
Seton Hall: 15,581
Villanova: 16,662
Xavier: 18,644

Weekday games
Providence: 15,248
Butler: 14,479
Creighton: ?

I'd assume the Creighton game would draw similar to Villanova on the weekend, with Xavier being a bit of an outlier with National Marquette day.

If you switched Seton Hall and Creighton, I'd assume Seton Hall would be similar to Butler (-1,100 tickets sold). If Creighton is ~16,000 (-600 tickets sold) tonight you still have a net positive of 500 tickets.

So what was it like?  You know, when Marquette came to your house, kidnapped you at gun point, and forced you to pay $25,000.

I can only imagine being taken in the middle of the night and the only thing you can see is the flashes of white clerical collars coming at you.

Does Rosies on Water still have dollar shots on Wednesdays? That'd be a great spot to pregame for tonight
