Title: Students need to police themselves
Post by: BenCat12 on February 15, 2014, 08:24:16 PM
Heard a lot of booing coming from the student section today during the player intros.  Juan and Jake were booed loudly and I even heard a couple for Derrick.  There were also cries for Dawson early in the game.  Was glad to see all three of them have good games and produce.  It was ridiculous hearing these students boo.  I hope after the great game they played, these guys don't have to hear booing ever again in their careers....shameful.

Anybody booing a Marquette player is a douche bag. And Derrick Wilson may be our most consistently solid player.

I did not hear the booing, by the way. And I thought the student section was great today.

Whether you heard it or not, it was there.  It stopped after player intros.  Thought the crowd was great as well, very loud.

I agree PRN--as long as the student section doesnt F with the National Anthem everting else can be handled.  When they decide to take over "Oh say can you see" like it's as Blackhawks game.........good luck telling the 75 years olds that you have have school spirit.

Honestly if this is true, that's low.

I'll get on our guys at times but this is on a freaking message board.

Booing during an intro of your team? That's just idk.

Hell, I'm a Twins fan and I never booed Nick freaking Punto in all the games he unrightfully started.

I sit in 428,  one section over is the students.  It may have just been the upper deck, but everyone in my group heard it......and commented how low it was.  I'm not making it up.  Hopefully if you sweater vests didn't hear it the players didn't either.

Didn't hear it from the students but did hear other fans calling for Dawson and Mayo to replace D Wilson and Thomas from the opening tip.  Even yelling that Wilson and Thomas suck.  Those comments didn't last very long and was fun watching the fans reaction after each of Thomas's 3's went in.  Went from having lots to say about those two players to silence and then to yelling at Xavier fans.

Heard no booing in 421. I think the worst I did was with about 3:40 left in the game and Xavier closing, Jake tried a 3 with about 28 seconds left on the shot clock. I scream, "what the h-ll is he doing?" Then I screamed even louder when Todd fouled their big center out on a ticky tack foul!

Never once booed though. Never will, though I promise to complain a lot!

For the most part I think the students in the lower bowl are excellent.  However the automatic bros in the upper deck are an embarrassment.  Their section boos our players on a fairly frequent basis.  I've even seen them cheer for opposing players who are being guarded by Derrick Jake or Juan.  They are the show up late crowd and leave early crowd.  If you are not one of them then there's nothing to worry about.  If you are then grow up and show some class.  Simple as that.

Not one of them but still gonna support my fellow classmates. The automatic debate was decided long ago so that point is invalid. Alumni show up later then the students. I'm one of those nutters that wait outside way too long. I've never heard booing besides on bad calls I could be wrong but the past 3 years I haven't heard that.

Like all groups of people, there are good and bad fans/students.  You sound like a good one.  But the bad ones certainly exist and don't need you defending them.  There is no debate, the automatic chant is stupid whether Davante likes it or not.  Just adds pressure and makes the students look stupid when he misses.  Absolutely zero upside to doing it.  Unfortunately I don't think it's going away.

Which of course does not cover the many alums who say nothing about the student section since we are nowhere near Milwaukee.

Fact of the matter is I hope you guys have a great time, are getting lubed before marching down the street, are sneaking booze inside your North Face jackets, and are creating the memories that will last you a life time. Marquette hoops was a central part of the Marquette experience for my wife and me. I know our crowd did things in the Arena that make me wince today but it was part of the fun and I'm glad we did them.

We would start drinking in our hovel on 15th then hit the 'Lanche to form a 100+ strong Landing Party for the walk down the street. Everyone had at least a six of Old Style inside his Army Field Jacket (don't ask) or those balloonish down parkas that were popular back then.  We had the guy who would scream, "Give 'em hell, Al!" towards the end of the Natl Anthem, the Hamms Tom Tom song, and the place went nuts when Al went after a ref. And if Al got Teed up you couldn't hear yourself think.

I remember we were playing DePaul and the Milwaukee Archdiocese had hundreds of its priests sitting together at mid court. When the students started chanting Bull Sheet at a bad call all the priests joined in.  And I'll never forget Doc Rivers half court heave.

You guys need to have fun and do it in whatever way feels right. The reality is that I wish I could join you guys but that would just be too odd, I'm afraid. If not creepy. But like most alums I want you guys to make the most of these games because these are memories you will carry forever if you are doing it properly with the right people.

I was in the student section, 437. There were boos for Jake, I was embarrassed to be sitting there. It was stupid, but I didn't think it was that loud. If most of the people here didn't hear it then I will assume Jake didn't either. In the upper level there are a lot of people who aren't actually students. A lot. I'm hoping the people booing were among that group.

Side note, I was there almost an hour early. Sometimes the lower levels get full fast. Don't be so judgmental.

It's the upper deck. It was like that when I was a student (2011 grad). They are the "bros" who roll into the game either late or right as the intro videos start. They are late because they are too sloshed to find their way to the BC. Nothing wrong with that, but they always rush to judgement. I remember them throwing things down into the lower bowl and booing Junior and Juan. They are a minority of students. I'm glad that it was far enough way that Jake and Juan couldn't hear it.

No fan should ever boo their home team...ever. If your team is struggling, cheer louder and rally them

Seriously, get off your high horse already. Although I'd prefer to sit closer to the court whenever I can, I occasionally sit by the Automatic section and am buddies with all of those guys. And even though you're under the impression that they all hate Marquette, bitch and moan 24/7, and actually CHEER for opposing teams, I hate to admit that you're completely wrong here. We all love Marquette hoops as much as you guys (don't need to rack up 5,000 + posts on a blog to be a fan), chant "Automatic" because Davante himself has said that he likes it (what other reasoning do you freakin' need), and are still cautiously optimistic that this squad has a run left in them. Sat in that section today, led a couple of "Automatic" chants, and wouldn't you know it, The Big Fella went a perfect 10 for 10. Quit your bitching.

There will always be the contingent of douche in the student section that act this way. They are likely rec league junkers that believe they can as good as Jake or Derrick. Their lives reached their eclipse in high school, and being pessimists and negative is a way of coping with their personal decline.

Sorry.  One of chick's biggest irritations is when some putz thinks that Marquette University is somewhere in Michigan.  Simply mixed up her schools.  We all know the a-hole she is talking about.

Back to the students.

If you ever get to meet any of the Superfans, they are among the nicest kids you will ever know.  We've enjoyed their company on numerous road trips, at the NCAA the last two years, etc.  They always make it a point to say hello when we are walking courtside and graciously accept new blood within their ranks with each arriving Frosh class.

Of course there are always a few students who aren't on their best behavior in any crowd of thousands.  But overall the students you meet at a game or on campus or in a local bar are exactly the fine young men and women you'd expect.  Oh, and as to 'Automatic', that's now fully endorsed after Davante's mom herself led the chant at GTown.  Wonderful, enthusiastic lady by the way.

A "jump" is $25.  You offering up "night HALO jump with blades and supox from 30k' then run 10k with a full TACP combat config"?

Yes. Night HALO from 30 on supplemental oxygen with a 1.8 AGL. We can simulate the TACP Combat load-out by carrying 120 pounds of dead weight.

If you are serious I can set it up. I have the gear and I know guys who will fly us. The only change I might suggest is to use T-11's unless you have experience with blades. A further caveat is that we would jump with 300+ pounds so you need to be confident with that much weight. And the offer stands: If you beat me I will buy you a car. You need to figure out what I get if you beat me?

What people need to realize is that age is a state of mind. I went through Jump School at Bragg and Yuma past age 40 and it kicked my ass. But success in anything requiring physical skill and strength is not limited by age. I know a lot of Seals, Rangers, and TACPs in their 40's who are beasts.

Now, since you are taking the piss out me I am curious what you are saying to Hards Alumni for making his petulant comment about age? Justice is applied equally or it is actually not being applied.

But if you are serious I can set the jump and I know the perfect C Course we can do this on. The 10k has about 3.5k' elevation gain. If you are jumper then you know - all the world's a drop zone.

No thanks, I consider myself one of the old man alumni at this point.

Plus, you'd win either of those.  ;D

Age is a state of mind. I ran in a marathon up this way a few years ago and was thrilled to see an 82 year old woman not just run it but complete it in less than 4.5. What really struck me though was that she had 4 wingmen who stayed with her throughout. Clearly, these runners could have been sub 3 but they chose to run along her side for encouragement, safety, and care. Made me ashamed to quibble over my time.

I understand supox is supplementary oxygen. I'm curious though as to what the blades are?

Blades are high speed chutes used by sport jumpers. They are super fast and highly maneuverable but can be deadly in many ways. JSOC adapted the sport version to handle more weight. The primary advantage of a blade in special ops drops is their maneuverability. Maintaining section integrity is far easier and you can pick your precise landing point which is important in places that have lots of rocks.

While I could be making an assumption here but...

You are probably a Cubs fan or Brewers fan(unless you are geographically all over the map with sports teams)

Both of those organizations make the Twins look like a world class powerhouse.

lol the twins are in a 3 year dry spell. While, the getting playoff whooped by the Yankees is a recurring end result the team has had the most consistent success of the 2000's in their division.

Let's also keep in mind that they have an absolutely loaded farm system. Not on of the variety where you hope they pan out, they have guys that are just a matter of how great they will be. Cubs have great prospect too...Brewers are just flat screwed. Guess they got airhead Garza.

Well, the Brewers could try the Mariners formula of throwing millions at someone. This always results in the guy underachieving for the length of his time at Safeco.

We just gave a quarter of a BILLION dollars to a guy who plays second base. Something is wrong with the economic values of America.

Sorry Keefe, I disagree. My only regret was when I was a kid and had a thimbleful of talent, I didn't work on it, improve my throwing arm and/or my hitting skills and become that second baseman.

Frankly, the Seattle Mariners had to do something. That team was awful last year. I went to a Mariners game while I was in Seattle on business and Safeco was becoming Ghostco, so few people were there. The Mariners were becoming the Seattle equivalent of UM-M or something.

By the way, are you stationed at Joint base McChord? Or are you retired?

Not so much the USAF but the Army is full of Corps of Cadets pukes. To give you some perspective, Texas A&M has some sort of anniversary in April. I was assigned to the MNC-I Staff as the Close Air Support Chief during the Surge. The Corps Chief Staff Officer under Odierno is an Aggie so he suspended major offensive ops for 3 days so all the Aggie Gomers could get back inside the wire at Victory to attend some Aggie shindig.

While I appreciated the stand down for allowing us to catch up on sleep I didn't like taking our foot off the pedal as we really did have Mookie, JAM, AQI, and the Quds back on their heels. There were a couple thousand Aggies crammed into the main DFAC and all night long you could hear them singing Aggie songs. I swore I never wanted to hear The Yellow Rose of Texas again.

Having said which, the Aggie officers I worked with were superb warriors who didn't exude the 'my feces lack odor' arrogance of a lot of West Point pukes. But you could spot an Aggie a mile away by the huge class ring they wear. Especially in the Iraqi sun those things glinted like fire. The reality is I served with a buttload of Aggies and they were almost to a man great guys.

If this is turning into a nostalgic dorm life thread I will be happy to keep everone updated on the current dorm situation.

McCormick: Still McCormick. Occasionally called the beer can. I feel like that one has stayed mostly the same.

O'Donnell: All guys freshman dorm, call it Bro-D nothing spectacular, about as much as you can expect from an all guys dorm

Cobeen: All girls freshman dorm, the nicknames have increased in number now including the virgin vault, slut shack, pu**y palace and other even more crewd ones that id rather not say.

Schroeder: sophomore co-ed. Probably the craziest dorm on campus today. Like McCormick but worse because sophomores dont care about getting into trouble as much as frosh.

Straz: The old YMCA on the other side of the highway sophomore dorm with 2 floors of honor student freshman. Super nice dorms and super quiet.

Abbotsford: The nicest and most quiet of the all freshman dorms all triples.

McCabe: Sophomore dorms, biggest dorm rooms on campus. Super quiet as well.

Carpenter: where the freshman basketball players stay. but other then them its all sophomores. Just your basic college dorm. not too crazy.

Mishuda: Used to be an hotel I believe, way on the west side of campus by the 2040s. Sophomore dorms, decent rooms can get really loud on weekend but nothing compared to Schroeder and McCormmick.

Appreciate the kind words. The anniversary you were referring to was probably Muster. It occurs every April. It is a tradition dating back to 1922 where all Aggies, current and former, gather together to honor all the Aggies who have passed away in the past year, with a special emphasis on veterans. The break you described is not uncommon. The most famous of all the musters occured during WWII. A regiment of Aggie grads that were stationed on Corregidor (some god forsaken isle in the Pacific Ocean) held a muster despite being in the middle of being bombed by the Japanese.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muster_(Texas_A%26M_University)

I have yet to witness a muster, as I am in my first year at TAMU, but I hear it is a beautiful ceremony. The campus holds Silver Taps monthly to honor all the Aggies that have fallen in the past month. I am very proud of working for an institution that's culture is so intertwined with the military.

Oh and you are right, the Aggie grads definitely love their rings. Even more than the supposed nose picking grads of Notre Dame.

To be honest even students dont like the big heads. Theyre more annoying and bothersome then anything. They take up space, if someone actually decides to hold one up (nobody really does) the people behing them cant see the game and theyre just awkward and bulky. They were coll for like the first 3 games I went to freshman year but now im not too fond of them.

Nothing worse than going to a concert and having the hippie chick in front of you doing the Dead Dance all night long.

Nice, was that a Help On the Way>Slipknot>Franklin's Tower or just a Franklin's?

I have seen it both ways. But Help on the Way>Slipknot>Franklin's at Winterland June '77 was definitive. We road tripped down to SF for 2 shows in that stand. Slept in a Chevy van.

You realize, of course, that isn't me in that photo?

Sorry Keefe, I disagree. My only regret was when I was a kid and had a thimbleful of talent, I didn't work on it, improve my throwing arm and/or my hitting skills and become that second baseman.

Frankly, the Seattle Mariners had to do something. That team was awful last year. I went to a Mariners game while I was in Seattle on business and Safeco was becoming Ghostco, so few people were there. The Mariners were becoming the Seattle equivalent of UM-M or something.

By the way, are you stationed at Joint base McChord? Or are you retired?

The M's try to do something every winter. The key is doing something that actually works!

I was stationed at JBLM to support I Corps. TACP's are embedded with Ranger teams so our operational alignment is with an Army Corps. Most of my work was with III Corps at Ft Hood but I got up here as my wife was a long-time Softie overseas who went to Redmond when I went back into the USAF.

After 2 Iraqs and 4 A Stans I finally caught one outside J Bad so I was medically discharged. Free Medical care for life and every month the Eagle flies over my house and craps out an $9,000 egg which I actually give to charity.

Funny thing is that when you are there you think about here and when you are here you think about there.

Well I would have accepted a simple "yes" to the question, but I'll respond a bit.

Not "taking the piss out of you", I just thought it sounded like fun!  To Hard's I would stay "Stop harassing old farts!", for which you need to know I'm in your mindset - you're as old as you want to be - but you do have to recognize that 'those damn kids' see you as an old fart.

I have no interest in carrying out a bet, especially for a car (I've got 3 paid off, and no space for any more).  I would need to get certified for solo skydiving (which I'm willing to do), but after that it sounds like a fun competition.  Though I'd also have to back down on the weight carried a bit, I don't need to risk any unnecessary damage to my already bad knees (no, they don't keep me from running, skiing, climbing, or anything else fun, I just need to baby them a bit).

Anyhow, if you really want to do this someday (just for kicks), shoot me a PM.  If I get to the point they let me jump out of a plane all alone, we'll be good to go.  Or we could just do the 10k, but that's not nearly as fun.

Dedicated Dead Head chicks keep the downstairs freshly mown because of all the road time and lack of access to showers. It's the pits that are lush, untamed ecosystems hosting a variety of life forms.

We saw 2 shows at Winterland in June '77. From what I remember it was incredible.

Get your jump qual and we can talk. Blades require a fairly extensive amount of experience as does night jumping so we would have to use T 11's during the day. HALOs are a kick in the pants because you free fall 20k+. There are some C and Q courses on this coast that are superb for adventure jumping and I know enough guys who would take us up. You're in SoCal, right? If so, I can get us into the Yuma range which is perfect for this sort of fun.

Ok bright MUers.  Lets figure this out.
http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/voice-level-d_938.html
So at 1 foot, shouting is about 88 dB.
If we do the -6 dB per doubling of distance by the time we get to 16 feet from the shouter we are down to 64 dB.  The ambient noise in the Bradley center is probably around 64 dB.  Hence if you were over 20 feet from the buffoons you probably never heard anything.
