Title: Do we beat Xavier tomorrow?
Post by: NersEllenson on February 14, 2014, 09:29:13 AM
Must win tomorrow at home against fellow bubble candidate X.  Need to shut off Christian from going off again.  Should be sold out crowd.  I'd imagine this game will be a pick em - no favorite.  Need Jamil, Mayo and Gardner to be huge.

I'm going to predict a victory...going with heart on this one...expect it will be a very close game throughout.

Yep.  Musketeers going down!  No doubt.  For they are evil and must be...

I say yes....

Due to Xavier being evil and thus necessarily needing to be destroyed, I am inclined to say yes.

I don't predict many wins, especially with this team, but I say we win.  The team is coming together and should be taking it to another level on Saturday.

I have to agree with teamdee.  This board loves to focus on the superlatives.  Opponent doesn't matter.  How about we focus on the process of what it takes to be successful.

This should be at least a 10 point victory. I believe it. And according to most, Buzz has it all figured out. Starters, rotation, scheme, etc. We win with little trouble. And we definitely need it also.

Let's turn X into a bubble team! I want this to be like the 2011 NCAA tournament game where instead of shutting down Holloway we shut down Semaj Christon.

Ners I love you man but the second part of being huge is to keep Jake,D.Wilson and Otule all under 15 min each. I know Buzz wants what he wants, he will play these three to much...we lose a close one.

As the offspring of two Xavier alums, whose grandfather was instrumental in having Tyrone Hill Attend XU, who was XU's biggest fan when They made the NIT (finally in 84) whose first MU game was MU's 1000th win at the MECCA and saw XU assistant Skip Prosser go nuts in the locker room afterwards, who knew knew Chris Mack when he had curly red hair; and who thinks Xavier is the most overrated team in the Big East......I say MU by 12.

My first MU home game in 4 years. 3 generations attending.  The oldest XU, the middle MU, the third "who cares".

Wow. That's a real mouthful that would make even Faulkner blush. But what I gather from that babbling brook is that your grandfather made illicit payments to someone named Tyrone Hill to get him to attend Xavier.

Marquette by 12.  Any team that shot 41 free throws in a game had to have the "hometown ref syndrome" working overtime for them.  Let's make it Marquette by 13.

I'm still looking for the answer to "Who's our Jimmy?"  Before JFB it was Jerel.  Seems like good Marquette teams always had that guy.  Vander qualifies.   Bill Neary back in the day.  There was no stud of the game on the other team because most often our designated "lock down defender" locked their guy down.

I think we can beat Xavier but I haven't seen that kind of play or player on this team.  And Chistdon killed us last time.  Longtime Bull's Assistant Coach and 6-time NBA champion Johnny Bach likened that kind of defensive tenacity it to a doberman.  Scottie Pippen was that guy, Bach's doberman, on the Scottie/MJ championship teams.

We don't have a guy that plays like that, that plays with "it."

Big game from Jamil with Todd as X factor if it becomes close at the end. MU wins.
Good formula for the run needed in preparation of BE tourney.

Looking forward to watching with a (hopefully) big crowd of fellow Carolina Marquetters at Ed's Tavern in Charlotte.

There will be distractions with so much merriment being had by all, but I am going to try to keep an extra-watchful eye on whoever matches up with Christon throughout. Because whenever an opposing guard goes off -- which is most games -- the Derrick and Jake apologists come up with all kinds of reasons why it wasn't their guy's responsibility and the Derrick and Jake critics go out of their way to say it is all Derrick and Jake's fault.

Hopefully Christon will be fed to the lions and we will triumph and I will be trying to assess who deserves the most credit!

Hey, once again I agree with MU82. Will wonders never cease, or is he coming around? Usually when somebody else's PG goes off, it is not the game changer's lock down defense responsibility. It is almost always blamed on Gardner, who is fat, has a poor attitude, and is the worst defender since Oluma Nakama of the ole' defense. Never is it Otule's fault when Derrick is beaten off the dribble--it is usually blamed on JJJ or any other off guard not named Jake for not switching. That is the way those apologists roll, and when somebody has the audacity to objectively point those issues out, the name calling and insults begin.

Christen is an outstanding player. One person (by himself) won't stop him. We'll need good on the ball defense and good help defense to make things difficult for him. Still, if he's making everything he's throwing up (like the last game) we'll be in trouble.

Generally I'd tend to agree, yet we saw Jimmy Butler completely shut down Tu Holloway in NCAA tourney.  Considering Buzz is on record as saying Derrick is an elite, lockdown, Aaron Craft caliber defender - and Christon is pretty far from being a 1st Team All American candidate - you'd think Buzz would have Derrick shadow Christon..and it shouldn't be any kind of problem.?  It simply wouldn't make sense to not have your elite, lockdown defender, (and guard) defend the other team's best guard.

Hopefully Buzz sees it this way and Derrick is up to the task...I think he will be and is capable...of holding Christon to at least something more in line with his season average of 16.8 instead of the season high 28 he got on us last go around...then again Derrick only played 22 minutes compared to his usual 30...and fouled out.

If we can keep Christon at a reasonable output...we should be able to win the game.
