Question, what is the worst RPI to get a at-large bid?
Chicos posted this in the other thread and it fits here ...
http://www.muscoop.com/index.php?topic=41143.msg567196#msg567196
Current RPI is 73
Projected RPI prior to BET, 77
In the six remaining games, we are supposed to go 3-3 including beating Xavier at home.
Go 6-0, finish at 39 RPI
Go 5-1, with loss at Nova finish with a 45 RPI
Go 4-2, with losses Nova and Creighton, finish with a 54 RPI
Go 4-2, with losses Nova and Providence, finish at 52 RPI
Go 4-2, with losses Nova and G'Town, finish at 55 RPI
Etc, etc
I feel like RPI isnt as used in basketball as it is in other sports. Then again the womens volleyball team had a top 10 RPI and wasnt one of the top 16 seeded teams. I really think you all are putting way to much stock into RPI.

I have us at 73 RPI as of right now.
Big problem is we are 6-13 vs RPI top 100 right now (using my source, not ESPN). 12-1 vs RPI 100+.
Worst RPIs to make tournament
74 New Mexico (1999)
67 USC (2011)
64 Marquette (2011)
63 NC State (2005)
63 Stanford (2007)
Throw out New Mexico because they changed the RPI formula after that.

Why do you feel this way, especially when plenty of committee chairmen over the years have said it is used as a tool. A friend of mine, who is a current commissioner of a conference and the former chair of the NCAA selection committee stated on his committee it was used by many members to determine one team vs another. It's impossible for them to watch all games, so it is a tool. Some members don't use it at all, some use it quite a bit.

I agree, esard. Last few years brackets have shown Kenpom and the like hold more value with some committee members. For this year's MU team, we look the worst in rpi... much better in kenpom (50 after last night.). Keep winning and this can sort itself out.

Agreed, but rpi isn't the end-all tool it used to be 5-10 years ago. Other analytical tools exist now which some committee members look at.

I think a lot of it is the conference you play in, SOS and the all subjective "eye test" yes people obviously use it or else it wouldnt be talked about, but just not as much as we are talking about. I feel like our bid in 2011 had a lot to do with our schedule that year.

Agree and no one has ever said it is. The thing is, however, it's the only "objective" source fans have to use that is public information that we know 100% is used by the committee to varying degree. Directionally speaking, it does a very good job. We know, if we are in the 60's, we have a very low chance of getting in, for example.
The eyeball test, all the other stuff, that's subjective and what is said in the selection room is purely a guess. I like the RPI simply because it is a universal application, applied the same to everyone. It has considerable flaws to it, but those flaws apply to every team. Plus, I know it is used.
As an example, each and every year when the committee chairperson is interviewed the RPI is a question to that person..."what role did it play", etc, etc. There are others, like Strength of Schedule (which is part of the RPI anyway), etc, etc, but the other analytical tools are not asked to the chairperson...remember, the RPI is a creation of the NCAA. Thus, it has some influence because it is their system.

SOS is indirectly built into the RPI.
