Title: Seton Hall thoughts
Post by: tower912 on February 11, 2014, 08:06:23 PM
1.   Jamil Wilson, great game.    Still some brain dead moves, but great game.   Possibly your best one at MU.
2.  Juan played well
3.   Rebounding matters.    Saved MU tonight.
4.  Derrick Wilson, great game.
5.   Free throws matter.   Good FT shooting is contagious.
6.  Still fell in love with 3's pointlessly.
7.   How did MU win this game with SH shooting that percentage from 3?   By playing great defense everywhere else.
8.   Mayo with a solid second half, despite not making any shots.
9.   Conference road wins are not artistic successes.   Take every freakin one and run away.
10.    1 down.  7 to go.

I haven't seen a box and missed the first half, but Otule had a couple nice offensive boards.

agreed with all point.

just want to point out that Mayo played a really good game. Just looking at his FGM-FGA doesn't do it. Took good shots and they rimmed out but he was smart and attacked.

Him and Ox living at the line was huge.

Derrick, Todd, Jake, Jamil and Ox is our best lineup right now forsure. 3 scorers and jake becomes more of one thanks to them being out there with him. Also the 4 FT shooters that make me most confident.

Rebounding was 31 to 19 for MU.  Huge.

Only 3 turnovers in second half.  Huge.

DWil played entire second half, 5 assists, no turnovers.  Huge.

No JJJ, no Taylor and minimum Burton. No Dawson second half, Juan's minutes to Mayo.

Jake 1 for 6 from three, but what a block on 6ft 7 Oliver.

SH was gassed last seven minutes or so.  Two more players in their rotation and they would be pretty good.  Next year with recruit Isiah Whitehead, along with Gibbs, they will be better.

Closed out the game like a very experienced team.  I'll take "average in extended minutes" Todd going 9-10 from the line with six rebounds, two steals, and two assists.

Rebounding: MU end: 12 offense, 16 for SHU defense.  SHU end: 3 offense, 19 MU defense.  Can't do any better than that.

Only a couple of issues, but I will never break my rule of no criticism after winning on the road, regardless of opponent or performances.

*  Best Juan has played in a long time, and not because he scored a few points.  His defense was outstanding, constantly forcing SH further and further from the basket
* DG's defense was much improved.  It had no where to go but up after the last game, but he was much above average tonight.
*  I really like Dawson and his aggressive attitude and think he will be an extremely solid contributor in the mold of Joe Chapman.  But is there any question after tonight who the starting PG should be?
* It's nit-picking in the context of his outstanding overall performace, but when they let SH back into the game is there anything more frustrating than Jamil's unforced turnovers?
* MU absolutely lived at the line
* In-Control Todd is almost as good as Good Todd

Yes....In-Control Todd.  Well put.

And they really have to stop using Jamil at the point.  Todd would be a better choice.

Don't know how often Gardner can play the 5 in that lineup, but tonight it worked great.

They put together a really nice stretch of offensive possessions.

It worked well against Seton Hall, could be trouble against others. But Jamil staying out of foul trouble will help a ton in that lineup.

Try 16.  7 in regular season.  3 in BET.  6 in NCAA.

If we win out were not playing on Wednesday in NYC or Dayton.

I don't think we'll go 7-0, but 5-2 is a helluva lot easier than 6-2.  Next two at home are huge.  I could see us in the "next four out" next week if we win Saturday.  First four out if we win Saturday and Tuesday.

The team finally won a game looking like a Warrior team.  Played tough defense, out hustled, out rebounded, got to the line, made free throws.  Honestly that may have been the best looking win in Conference this year.  Far better than the DePaul, SH or Butler games at home this year.
This team has been tough to root for but got to admit I'm excited for the X game now.

I just don't get who you want out there.

11. You always look better when you're hitting shots. Great job, Jamil, especially in the first half.

12. To call Dawson ordinary tonight would be an insult to "ordinary." He had a long run, too, and I uttered words I rarely do: "When is Buzz gonna get Derrick back into the game?"

13. Jake has to hit those shots. The one, where he didn't even catch rim, was brutal.

Buzz in post game said it is a joy to coach when a team plays hard and tough like today. Homer asked him when they were down by six, when he called the timeout, what did he say in the huddle. Buzz said first I did not loose it and scream at them, but told them to keep on playing hard specially on defense. Buzz said he felt they were playing very well and most 3's they made were contested in second half. Felt only 3 were not well defended.

My thought exactly.

We saw why the freshmen don't get the minutes that many think they should. And I have no doubt that things aren't much different in practice. I have said that Burton will be a 16-18 point scorer (maybe even by next year) But I was also yelling to get Juan back in as we were getting torched on 'D'

I'd love to see the +/- for each player tonight. I think it would show why the minutes are like they are.

Offensively, they got points from everybody, but the key players tonight have to be Jake guarding Oliver the last nine minutes.  I am sure you have to give the coaches kudos for telling Jake
not to leave him as MU loves to double, can not double a shooter of his caliber.  Secondly, Derrick really played well the last five minutes, the drive on the baseline was really nice, nobody really guards him so when the chance arises, he took advantage of it, and made 2 critical free throws.  Nice job for both, makes Saturday game look like a real dogfight, X is good and taking
it to Butler tonight.

Loved DWil's FT form. Little more loft. Solid 3/4. Agree that Jake's D was critical even though his shot was off. Chris asserting himself down low.  Jamil double double.  Finish strong Seniors. Getting to the dance depends on you.

Derrick was making rain with the loft on his free throw shot tonight. Take it for what its worth but during the Butler pregame I was watching him take free throws and he made 11 in a row. Hopefully the sign of things to come.
