We had one back in the day.  It's sole member was Rich "Radar" Van De Motter, from 10 S Schroeder.   ;)

MU has had at least one speed-skater in almost every Olympics in the last generation (UWM too, which has one in these Olympics as well).  This is thanks to the Pettit Ice Center 10 minutes from campus.  As noted above, Hansen medaled 4 years ago in Vancouver while living in the MU dorms.

But but but ... we cannot talk about MU formalizing this into a speed-skating team.  So I'll start a thread about MU starting a football team instead.

Emery Lehman, a 17 year old from Oak Park, just finished 16th in the 5,000 meters.  Trains at Pettit.  His involvement in speed skating was a direct reaction to my little league coaching.

Does anyone know what events he's racing in this year?  500, 1000, and 1500?  Team only? It looks like they had the solo 5000 today and he wasn't involved.

Men's 500 is Feb 10.
Men's 1000 is Feb 12.
Men's 1500 is Feb 15.
Men's 10000 is Feb 18.
Men's team is Feb 21-22.

Haven't heard a peep about this from MU's Facebook, Twitter, or email communications, which is a shame. Sometimes I wonder about who is running these....

Emery Lehman, a 17 year old from Oak Park, IL, just finished 16th in the 5,000 meters. Emery was just accepted into MU Engineering Program. We hope to see him on campus next year.

Watching him right now. Skating against a Russian who is competing at a furious pace and finishes in first place. Emery skated well but back a few seconds

+1,000,000

MU could use these guys to promote the school and get alumni, students, incoming students and prospective students excited.  Instead crickets.

I fear they think a good idea is to have Hansen give a friendly wave at a home BB game during a time-out and he'll get a polite golf clap ... A complete wasted opportunity.

Hansen skated today (actually right now) in the 500 meters.  Not his best event and they said he was skating this just to get on the ice and get his Olympics started.

Later this week he skates in the 1000 and 1500.  The 1500 is his best event.

Dont know much about skating distances but I feel like the difference between a 500 and a 1500 is like the difference between a 100 and a 800 in track. Thats pretty impressive competing in both.

Isn't the diff 1000m vs 700m?

Frankly, Marquette not jumping all over Hansen's participation is an outrage. This is the University's sports highlight for this semester.

Michigan is always represented at both Summer and Winter Games but it has yet to lose its cachet for the University community. Michigan celebrates its accomplishments and its brand reflects that foundational support. Marquette would do well to take note.

Why isn't MU getting together with NBC to produce a profile of him?  MU should do the leg work of getting footage of him in his dorm, in class at the Pettit. Pitch NBC to do a story about the long list of Speed Skaters from MU ... it's not just a basketball school.  What great exposure for the school.  And what a complete waste not too.

Hensen

Further MU should be promoting Emery Lehmann (who skates in the 10,000 on the 18th).  He is a HS senior and has been accepted to MU.  They should smooze him big time to make sure he shows up this September to keep the speed skating tradition going.

1500 meters results ...

Hansen top American in 7th.
Shani Davis 11th

Hansen was 9th in the 1000. So two top 10 finishes.

Still has the team pursuit (4 skaters as a pack), Hansen won silver in Vancouver in this event.  The Dutch are a juggernaut this year, should easily take gold.  Silver or bronze very doable.

Emery Lehmann skates in the 10,000 on the 18th.

Lehmann skated in the 10,000 today in at 13:28.  He really pushed it hard ... nice shot of him sitting on the ice puking into a bucket when he was done.

Competition still going on so his time should be good for a top 15 finish, about what was expected from him.  He is the current world junior 5000 Champion (he's only 17) and Olympic trials champion at 10,000.  He has a very bright future.

Hope to see him on campus in September as a new MU Freshman (he's been accepted)

--------------------

On another note, we all know how bad the US speed skaters are doing.  They were expected to win several medals and have been shut out so far.

The best US performance to date has been Hensen's 7th in the 1500.

As his mom said, once he puts some meat on the 17 year old bones, he should be a force.

The Dutch swept the 10,000 ... their fourth podium sweep in speed-skating.  Winning time of 12:44 smashed the Olympic Record (OR) by 14 seconds (and 2.7 seconds off a WR) which is astounding for sea-level track.  Second place was also below the old OR.

The Dutch now have 19 medals in speedskating alone.  This total alone leads to the country standings.  No other country has more than 2 speedsakting medals.

Lehmann finished 10th in 13:28.67.  I'll say it right now ... he should be a favorite for 2018 in Korea.
