I was glad to see the freshman get as much time as they did. I by no means thought that they would lead us the "promised land". However, I think this will help us in the rebuilding process that will take place next season.
Yes, but next year will really be a rebuilding year. 2015-2016 will be the new era starting, especially if Stone comes to MU.
Am I the only one that thinks we will be better next year. Deonte is progressing. JJJ is coming around after struggling early. Dawson looks solid. Everything I have heard about Duane says he works hard and is really getting after it in the weight room. Steve has been promising. Good recruiting class with a stud scorer. For those not on twitter Ahmed Hill said he is close to 3000 points we need that. Future is promising and I think we can start next year. One big thing that could help is if Juan could step into a Lockett role next year.
I predict growing pains still but this has to happen now.
If the seniors are not going to show the heart, give it to the kids who will carry the MU banner in the next three seasons.
We will be better for it. And Buzz will earn more respect for doing so.
We have a 3*center next year, if he shows up. St. Johns has talent but they aren't a good team. What does that make us?
We have no leader, rarely play smart basketball and just go thru the motions every other game. Who do you blame
when a team doesn't gel by February? The rotation is a joke..I don't beleive any team in the league respects us.

Not the only one. Our guard play will be better next year which will offset frontcourt losses. We will be an NCAA team next year. Looking like this year it is not going to happen.

+1 Great post. While this season has been a debacle, I think ultimately Buzz learns his lesson and they really over achieve next year.

Shouldn't talk that way. Sultan and jesmu and Lloysmoore will set you straight - they want Jamil & Todd out there. Upperclassmen and all.

SJU is a tall and long defensive club.
We ran into our opposite today: a non-shooting, defensively inferior club can't beat a long, defensive-minded team.

I agree as well. And I have already said that in 2 years we will be ready to make a run.

Yeah, I wondered why Buzz didn't play them.
We were only down by 13 at the start of the second half. That's manageable.
But if Jamil and Todd aren't showing senior leadership and the want to win, I can't blame Buzz for benching them to teach'em a lesson.
0-1 from Todd is inexcusable.
0-5 from Jamil is inexcusable.

We have played 3 games against the team in last place and lost 2 out of 3.
Marquette isn't a good team.

Uh, brand, normally I like our back and forth conversations. But, I can't say I appreciate this. Nowhere did I say anything along these lines. This has never been my thought process.

I saw 5 guys that looked like they cared today. Derrick, Jake, Juan, JJJ, & Burton.
You think Buzz saw this too? I think those 5 had the most minutes in the 2nd half

Everyone thought this year was an NCAA year, with a returning front court and promising freshmen. That is not happening.
Next year, well lets wait and see. I put little faith in "expectations" of newcomers because the fact is they rarely contribute all that much. I think next year we will continue to rebuild.

I apologize. Maybe I cherry picked a post of yours.
Just saw you & Sultan were critical of Dreadman when he said the freshmen should play more.

Thanks. I was critical, but only because I don't think the freshmen are the answer this year anymore than the upperclassmen are the answer. I don't think there is an answer this year. I think we're just having a down year. We've had some unexpected departures in the last few years, plus a couple injuries, plus just an off year by coaches and players across the board. No one change is going to turn it around now, nor do I think one change would have turned it around 10 games ago.

I agree - it's just kinda been a perfect storm this year.

I agree. Marquette doesn't get blue-chip, legit all-america-type high school players. They go to Kentucky, Duke, ect. Wish Buzz would go back to recruiting a couple of JUCOs every year--that seemed to fit his background best and was his specialty. Get some mature players who are ready to play right away.
In order for MU to improve next year certain things must line up.
I don't believe Mayo will be back for some reason or another. JJJ must put on some weight, he is a stringbean right now. Duane Wilson must be the PG, but that will be discussed just the same as this year, over and over.
With Gardner, Jamil and Otule leaving the frontcourt that leaves Taylor at the center spot with unheralded Paige as backup until Fischer arrives.
So maybe the lineup will look like:
Pre-Fischer:
Center - Taylor
PF- Burton
SF- Anderson
SG - JJJ
PG- Dwil
With that lineup, you think this year was bad, take off the goggles. Taylor has missed numerous "bunnies" today, just like Anderson and so on..... If Taylor gets in any foul trouble, MU is mince meat......
Fischer back:
Center: Fischer
PF: Taylor
SF: Burton
SG: JJJ
PG: Dwil
Now, some size and someone with athletic ability up front. Would love to insert Du Wilson as starting pg, but who knows.
I said this earlier, but Ahmed Hill is the real deal stud and I believe finally MU will have a freshman making an impact immediately. Burton was #52, Du Wilson was #51 and JJJ was #37 per Rivals coming out of high school. Sooner or later, one will thrive to expectations.
I see another subpar year next and then with the youngsters growing, learning and hopefully playing, a new era starts in 2015. Especially if Stone arrives.

Have Steve practice dunking the ball ;D
nyg, I'm with you.
Those last three FTs by Todd were just a teaser of his ability.
But his inconsistent play and disappearing acts on and off the court begs for his dismissal.
After all, they ARE one year scholarships, right?

Mayo sitting the entire second half was just an indication of what might come subsequent to the season. I have no clue as to his mindset, etc., but just not there. His return might just hamper development of JJJ and Hill. JJJ has the ability, but not the experience or strength yet, but you can see it is there. Like I said, Hill is the wildcard next year and I hope I don't eat my words with him and the team's expectations. Programs have their lapses and next year might be a continuation of this year. It happens, but root the team on and wait until 2015.
I find it amusing how fast this board turns on Todd....it's amazing actually. He's the team's 3rd leading scorer. Everyone on this team has had inconsistent moments...Todd especially when it comes to playing time...consistently inconsistent. Makes a few mistakes...he's out for the game..or most of it. Meanwhile, we've had Jake Thomas consistently getting 25 minutes per game - and I'm not certain if there is one thing Jake does better than Todd. Guarn-god-dang-tee it, if Jake ever tried going to the basket forcing action...he'd have a sh$t ton of turnovers.
Does Jake have any assists this year? Jake just made his 3rd 2pt shot of the freaking year, 22 games into the season.
So yes, Todd may turn it over on occasion, forcing action, trying to attack...but I'll take that attacking..much like Burton...over guys who play safe/don't make any mistakes...because they never force action on the basketball court.
Point is Mayo may not be here next year, not to bash him. Todd does have ability, but is not consistent in any manner. One good game, three so-so. Today could have been his worst game and he sat, just like Jamil, for some reason the entire second half. Buzz can only answer why in a ten point game early in the half. Buzz is inconsistent with subbing, but not for the second half today, those starters played seven minutes without a sub, probably a Buzz record.
Todd played 12 minutes, had 0 points, 0 rebounds, 0 assists, 4 turnovers and 2 fouls.
Jake played 20 minutes, 4 for 7 (3 for 5 from three), 11 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 turnover, 1 foul.
The Thomas issue will be a moot point next year.

Things Jake Thomas does better than Todd:
**3 point shooting
**Rebounding
**Protects the ball
That being said, this is exactly why I complain about Todd's inconsistencies and why he is absolutely NOT a replacement for Vander. He is great one game, and completely non-existent in another. You simply cannot count on him night and and night out.
I felt for awhile that are only chance to get to NCAA tournament is to win the Big East tournament. That is why we have to keep starting JJJ and Burton, as they have the most chance to improve over the next month to get us ready for conference tournament.

We are not winning the BE tournament. I do agree we keep starting the young fellas. They are the future.
I really thought it was interesting that Jamil and Todd sat the whole second half...sending a message to the guys who need to take over? Or did they mouth off at halftime?

Wilson sat the whole second half. Todd did play early in second half. The game actually ended for us, when Todd got a steal and then got called for charging.
