Title: So shocking
Post by: dddawson on January 30, 2014, 12:40:12 PM
In the beginning John Dawson was either never mentioned....called a waste ...... Forgotten ... Or was a joke .....and now hes the answer.....the blame.....somebody's favorite ..... Not ready .... Some say he can't do this he can't do that .....and quiet as it's kept, has made some eat their words.  You haven't even gotten a full glimpse of what this kid can do .... BUT shhhhhhh YOU BETTER PAY ATTENTION cause he chose MARQUETTE out of 41 other D-1 (some who beat MU this year) schools all because he loves a challenge!!!  I'm waiting for the next topic about an 18 year old kid who nobody on this board really knows.

You talk about where did he come from .... Why is he here .... As if Marquette is in the business of wasting money .... A certified psycho can see that the young man is humble and hungry and is a legit BALLER  .... Even on the bench HES the first one up cheering and EVERYTIME he's questioned about how he feels, he answers with a team mentality.  Not selfish but needs nobody to tell him whether or not he can play, knows who he is on and off the court, loves the players on the team loves Buzz and is smart enough to learn from the vets and trust the coaches.  Ps.... The freshman are expected to make a few mistakes now and then but experience is the best teacher.   36 years coaching experience ..... 1300 kids trained each year .... Resume of D1,2,3, Juco and former plus current NBA players trained ..... Oh Dad!!! .... Your speculation is humorous and extremely  entertaining .... But I know one thing for sure ..... He can and is a BIG help for this team

Like to modify my previous comment, seeing that you identified yourself as being very close to John in a previous message.

I read this board way too much, and while I don't remember everything that has been written, I do not recall anything close to anyone calling him waste, forgotten, or a joke.  I can tell you, 99.9% of Mu fans are excited that JD chose Marquette, and see a TON of potential in his game.  He has a pretty shot, calm demeanor, and handles the ball well.

You are right, he will be a big help to this team.

Clearly the season has been tough one for the team, and it's nerdy fans who spend way too much time on the interwebs.  But the whole Dawson v. Wilson debate has spiraled out of control the past month, and many think it's not an either or, but a combination of both can help this team win ball games.

Also did anyone understand the sudden "36 years coaching experience" part of the rant? Is this this guy's resume' or what?

I really have liked what I have seen out of your son and am really glad that he likes the challenge..  I hope you had the chance to hear what Buzz said about him during the coaches show last week because it was very positive.  And you are right, people really do need to be mindful about what they say because it is a public forum.

Best of luck for the rest of this year and beyond.

PREACH!

Thanks for posting.  Please keep John hungry and humble...his time will come and some of us know he'll be a very good player once given a good chance.

I've said it before - Buzz's loyalty is a double edge sword - he won't sell a vet out easily, at all as proven this year...so assuming John develops well at MU, and if for some reason one of the future PG recruits comes in as a star....

You can rest assured John will be able to shoot 8% from 3, 35% from 2 and 48% from 2 in 30 minutes of action and score 5.1ppg, and still have a LOCK on the starting job!!   :o

Right but I have no idea what you're trying to say.  Like are you saying that you've coached all these people? Are you saying you've been watching a bunch of people? I don't know maybe I'm the only one not getting it.  I do love Dawson though.

Mr. Dawson,

I wouldn't recommend reading MU Scoop, or really any MU related message boards.  Everyone here is a die hard fan, and often things are said that would anger the player, or a family member.  In reality, I think all knowledgeable MU fans are very happy to have your son on the roster, and would love to see him get more minutes.  It is obvious the kid has a ton of talent - his time will come.

This year has been a frustrating one for all of us.  We're used to winning, and we haven't seen a whole lot of that this year.

threads like this are like watching train wrecks in slow motion...

Mr. Dawson, I hope you understand that the vast majority of people on this board have the basketball knowledge of a preschooler.  many of them are about your sons age and have the intelligence and perspective and responsibility of a teenager.  Additonally, many of them are drinking or are drunk when they come on these boards to vent.

People say things behind the anonimity of a computer that they would not say to a persons face, this doesnt make them any less stupid, just exponentially bolder.  In fact the same people that have called Buzz Williams every thing good in the book are now calling him every thing bad in the book.

Unfortunately, it comes with the territory and the state of todays internet fandom.   For better or worse, it is the case with all programs.  Go to the Kentucky or Indiana fan boards after a loss and it isnt hundreds of idiots it is thousands and tens of thousands.

Buzz does not read or look at print or social media during the season and I know he instructs the people in the program to do the same.  i would follow his advise.  Personally I stay away from these boards for usually 2-3 days after a loss and even then take everything with a huge grain of salt.  i usually come on for program information, recruiting etc, and never the opinions of the uninformed and uneducated.

Mr. Dawson, your son will be a good point guard at Marquette. He has the talent. Buzz works them hard on defense to build character, get to the next level and to win games. He brinGs them along slowly. I think Buzz, this blog and anyone that has seen him play expects him to one of the leaders of this team in the future  Some, like me, think he should get more minutes now but Buzz gets paid a lot more than me to make that decision. He has been successful with that approach. It will come, just a matter of time. Your son is clearly one of the keys to the future of this team.

I admit I was one of the people that was not excited with a three star player, but I am excited to have him now.  That is all that matters.

I've never understood star ratings. Websites rate players based on what...watching them a couple of times per year...? What about how the player fits into the system in which he commits to? Isn't that more important? Michigan, Miami and Syracuse play zone defenses. Is a 5 star pg that is 6' tall better than a 4 star pg that is 6-4? Obviously not. Of course, we all could poke holes in the recruiting rankings...every fan of every program could. If the recruiting experts were so good at what they do, why have none of them ever been hired by college programs or NBA front offices? Afterall, hs seniors are only one year removed from the NBA if they are good enough...

Mr. Dawson...I'm a dad with a son at MU who I'm very proud of too (plays in the band, not on the court :) ). Its great to hear you brag on him...he deserves it.

My son and I saw some of the MU players in a summer league game to see "what we were getting". I saw John sitting against the wall between games and engaged in a little small talk. He's a real nice kid. I told him I hope his years at Marquette are a real success on-and-off the court and I would say a little prayer for him.

God is answering that prayer.

You must be a good father because by all accounts he is a great kid.   Humble, hardworking, a good teammate.   I believe he is going to be very good.  He had a very nice game against Georgetown.    The most negative thing I have said about him is that I haven't seen enough from him to convince me he should be starting this year.   I HAVE seen enough that he will be starting and performing well at some point in the future.   Thanks for sending such a great kid to Marquette.

Agree 100%. No disrespect, but I can't believe everyone seems to be apologizing for expressing their opinions. We have no influence on team decisions. If Buzz listens to us, I wish he would let us know. Now, if we started disrespecting Derrick or John in a game setting by booing or heckling them, apologies would be in order. Call them what you want as long as you cheer and support them at games and on campus.

Rev. Dawson.  Job well done to you.  Keep up the good work.  Good kid, nice game, and great attitude.  Can't wait to see him as an upperclassman and am going to enjoy watching him grow.

What I don't understand here, is .. beyond the natural freshmanocity of Dawson, Scoop has been pretty complimentary to him .. easily a majority of the board wants to see him play MORE.

But, welcome to Scoop, Mr. Dawson.
I think he is referring to pre season. Let's face it. Rev Dawson is right. Many of us including ,myself thought he was an insurance plan for Duane Wilson. Perhaps it was his 3 star rating that made me skeptical of him as everyone else was a 4 star in the class. The point is that the majority of the board had similar feelings but it doesn not matter as we all know that Dawson is a gamer and a key piece going forward

I liked what I saw on his highlight tapes.   I thought he was smooth and would eventually be a contributor.

Precious post.  Hopefully will make some think and re-read their posts before they hit the send button.

Me Dawson:

I have read this board every day since it began. Every day, except vacations outside US. And I have never read anyone calling John a waste. Maybe I missed the one moron, but I assure you that person got ripped apart by us real fans.

Fans are fickle and reactionary, please don't take us all too seriously. We really deserve to.

Hope Derrick's Dad doesn't read this forum.

Exactly what I started thinking reading this ... Oh....no.

Nice to have you on the board.  I'm a big fan of John and hope that he starts to get more minutes over Jake.  He's certainly earned it!

See, that's the thing I was writing about.  The thread starts as if Scoop had some how slighted Dawson.

I think he was treated like all freshmen .. with high hopes.   It was pretty legit to think Dawson was going to be 3rd off the bench in the PG position, with a highly touted Wilson ahead of him.

The Indiana board is startin' to get it right. Rippin' Crean a new one for bein' Clappy the Clown.

Wow, slip a Crean post in there that did not derail the thread. How unusual.

Hilltopper

I agree. For the most part it has been pro Dawson on this board this year. Actually as season progressed it became very pro Dawson.

Thanks for the insights on your son John.  Needless to say the posts on this board are from folks who don't have that sort of insight into these young men - who they are and they can become/their potential.  Certainly needs to be read w/ that in mind.  That said, again good for us not so informed to have some further insight and hope John has a great career at MU on the court and in the classroom.

Not true.
He was the freshman that almost all of us knew nothing about, and instantly jumped on the fact that he was only a three star player.

Welcome to the board, Mr. Dawson.

I applaud your son's decision to come here and challenge himself.  He could have gone to a program of lesser basketball pedigree and gotten more minutes, but he willingly accepted the challenge of coming here and fighting for PT.  I, along with many others here, certainly admire such ambition and you should be proud as a parent to have instilled such confidence in him.  By all accounts, he is a stand-up young man with a good head on his shoulders and we are proud to have him represent our alma mater.

All the best to you and your family.
