Title: good game plan
Post by: raul on January 28, 2014, 11:45:28 PM
I thought Buzz had a good game plan vs Villanova but in the end we came up a little short. The best chance of making the NCAA tourney this year is winning the Big East tournament which is very possible. The future looks great with all the recruits that Buzz has coming in. Sure we are disappointed with the season up till now but its not over, so enjoy our seniors contributions and the growth of our undergrads.

I not sure how good we will  be next year as talented new comers still have to learn. Look at Kentucky, who supposedly had the best recruiting class ever, who a lot of people thought had a chance to go undefeated. They lost for the 5th time last night.  However, I do believe that if Buzz left most of our incoming recruits would opt out and maybe some of the current young players would leave also. We need to be patient this year and probably next year. Villanova and Geogetown both had down years in recent history. It happens to most programs.

Now the excuses are being laid out for next year already.

I really believe we will be better next year.  Guards are critical to the college game and our guard play will be much improved.  Yes our frontcourt will be a weak point but there is enough talent there to get to the tourney.

We'll be better next year in my mind, especially during conference play.  Front line will almost certainly be Luke, Steve and Deonte.  No disrespect to our current guys but that's a meaningful talent upgrade with another year under their belt.  And I believe the guard play will also improve.  This year we got caught with our pants down a little when Van unexpectedly left and Duane got hurt.  Again, not being critical but does anyone really believe that on March 30, 2013 Buzz thought DWil and Jake were going to average 30 minutes and that our best alternate at the point initially was Jamil playing totally out of position?

Barring major injuries or last minute defections (McKay, Du Wilson, Steve, JJJ), we will be fine.  People complain that it's Buzz's recruiting or bad coaching, but give us back those players in good health - even 2 or 3 of them - and we'd be just fine right now.

Yeah, I know injuries happen, but Steve, Duane and Jameel were all expected to be significant contributors this season.

I am not sure 35+ mins of De Wilson gonna yield much better results next year, especially without Davante to save our scoring efforts...

Yeah, our troubles this season are all about one guy. ::)

I'm sure it has nothing to do with a starting SG who can't create his own shot...or a strange absence of senior leadership...or a huge drop in many players' FT%...

....or an inept coaching season.

You sure about that?  Taylor will be improved IMO simply because he will be returning from injury.  But Luke and Deonte will be sophomores that played sparingly as freshmen.

I actually think the backcourt is going to be better.  Two senior guards with a bunch of capable back ups.

I am sure all teams with bright futures are planning around a returning PG averaging 5 pts, 3.8 assists, 1 3pt made in the season and shooting terrible shooting percentages from FT, 2pt and 3pt...

How does that stock up against the top 20 PG's in the country?  the top 50?

Well, another season of 4 on 5 basketball - but maybe we have much better players in the other 4 positions - that is what you hope / subscribe to?

I would prefer a team with top talent at all 5 positions and especially at PG....

Expecting drastic improvement (or even an NCAA tournament birth) next year IF Derrick Wilson is still logging 30+ minutes a night is another pipe dream on this board. I have faith a lot of the pieces are there that could make a decent tournament team, but its hard to win 4 on 5, regardless who your other 4 players are.
That being said, Marquette should be an extremely undervalued team moving into the 2015-2016 season, assuming our talented young guys don't transfer out. Get your Vegas futures tickets now!
