Title: Jamil- The X factor
Post by: Texas Western on January 27, 2014, 08:41:28 PM
Everything was set for Jamil to have that breakout year we have been expecting. Now that STj appears to be back, what do people think about the chances that Jamil goes on a tear for the rest of the season? Maybe even lead us somewhere good? With all the talk about the guards I think this is the x factor not being focused on.

This x-factor has been discussed extensively.    I believe that all the talent is there but he doesn't have the killer instinct/warrior mentality.   Some think he just isn't that talented.    He is running out of time to step up.

Like the play near the end of Nova. Jamil caught the ball, pump faked, got his man in the air. Jamil then took 2 steps toward the basket (meanwhile Otule was sealing off the inside defender) and, instead of attacking the basket for at least a foul, he took a terrible jumper (might have gotten blocked, can't remember). That's Jamil in a nutshell to me.

Edit: If Jamil is playing the 3, I'd love to see us take advantage of the potential size matchup and put Jamil on the low block. If we had Mayo and Jake on the outside, it'd be hard to have help D doubling Jamil.

If Jamil had half of Butler's intangibles, he'd be a great one. But he doesn't. And he's not about to suddenly find them.

Jamil has the physical tools and skills to play in the NBA.  What he lacks is focus.  Focus is at least as important as either of the other two and that's why Jamil will see little, if any, time in the NBA.  IMO, ability to focus is a talent just like a physical talent, some are just born with more of it.  Ask anyone with ADHD.

I agree with those who say the Jamil we've seen so far is the Jamil we'll have for the rest of the season.  If he gets mad or if he's in a very intense situation (like the end of the Davidson game), his focus is better, but those moments are few.

I like your first post. Completely agree.

As noted, this is a topic that has been discussed often. I'm not clear, though, on the connection you seem to make between STj being back and the possibility of Jamil now (finally) going on a tear. Why do you think Jamil stepping up now might be any more possible with STj getting more minutes (including, possibly, some of Jamil's)?

Jamil aka Cupcake Jake, the X factor? Please! We know what we'll get from cupcakes, sweet softness. STJr in the high post is our go to.

+1

He has the instinct...occasionally. That dunk against Georgetown was perfect

I agree with others that Jamil at the 3 could be a matchup nightmare for teams.  Unfortunately the thought of posting him up has not really werked, instead of using his size and strength in those opportunities he has turned the same way and shot a fade away almost every single time, did it 3? times in the second half at Butler.  A drop step or an up and under going towards the hole is going to end up in a favorable situation almost every time.  A fade away against a small defender from the block is well, about as inexplicable as Jamil Wilson has been for about going on 7-8 years now.
