Interesting that Mayo has been in the red that often. Also proves that Juan is borderline useless.
Juan has been in the red in each of the last 5 games. Todd has been extremely inconsistent, which I don't think is a surprise to anyone. He was +22 against DePaul and -29 against Butler. Both numbers are the largest of any player on the team over the last 5 games. Seems that Mayo consistently being in the black will be the key to the rest of the season.
I have really been pulling for Juan to have some success, because he and Jake are the only two I've seen giving their all for every minute they've been on the floor this year.
That's why it pains me to see these numbers and accept that he probably can't get more PT until the numbers change.
As Yogi Berra's cousin's nephew's barber always said, numbers don't lie. Unless they do.
I love Juan, but those numbers are brutal. Unless he can start hitting perimeter shots, he's got to sit
I just took a peek at Juan's numbers. What struck me is that he has taken less shots than Deonte and Derrick. Now granted Derrick was getting the lion's share of minutes for a bit there at PG but Juan from what we have seen is a relatively competent shooter from deep and relatively competent in the mid range game. Derrick has taken nearly 30 shots more.
Deonte has take nearly 30 shots more than Juan and even more than Derrick in a lesser role. Juan in the game on offense is basically a game of hot potato.
He gets the ball, he passes the ball it comes back he passes the ball again. Juan had 1 game where he looked for some offense in the Ball State game. Crazy enough the only other time he took 9 shots in a game was the Madison game which also was his season high in minutes....
In Big East Play this year for Juan...Those numbers are atrocious. Is the guy really worth fighting to have come back?!

That's Juan's game man haha catch the ball pump fake 2 dribbles never look inside pass to a guard near out of bounds hope he catches it watch him get trapped and then run back on D. Once on D jump on every pump fake and let guys pass you regularly.
High level D1 Player right here.
Juan has basically turned into a defender / rebounder. I'm not saying he's been good by any means, but he has moved into a more limited role. Furthermore when you are constantly playing defense, and subbed out on offense, your +/- can only go down. Even if you are successful a good portion of the time, your +/- isn't going to go up.
There are a lot of issues with +/-, and this is one of them. And I also don't really understand the value of the per minute figures either.
Him vs. Steve is an interesting comparison. I would argue Juan has slightly better defense but Steve has far better offense, better rebounding, and way way more upside at this point.
Juan won't be getting much PT next year. The switchables are coming on back with the next recruiting class. Where Juan fit the mold of a Buzz guy he never even got close to the guys before him.

He almost never comes in for one defensive possession and then gets subbed out before an offensive possession. The per minute stat isn't difficult to understand, it shows the amount of points, +/- the team produces while said player is on the court. Odds are you don't like +/- because it doesn't fit your narrative. While not a discussion ending stat, +/- does have value.
