Title: Cheap, back-in-the-day, beer thread.
Post by: tower912 on January 23, 2014, 01:54:07 PM
We have an epic thread about beer.   Mmmmmm, beer.    A tangent just popped up in a thread about how the thought of an Old Style took a poster back to a different place and time.   We miss Ousmane Barro.       So........which beer, that you never drink any more, takes you back to college, even for a minute?   I have two.
1.  Miller Lite.   The Gym.   (happy blank look on my face as I drift a way)
2.  Special Export.   God, I loved that stuff.   Tasted like Moosehead, brewed in Lacrosse.......New owners, new recipe, never mind.

Was going to Miller Lite also.
I have to add in Red, White & Blue from the Lanche

I used to keep a tourist pamphlet from the Old Style Brewery inviting everyone to "Come visit the world's largest six pack!".

I used to drink Pabst like it was water during my MU days.  Now I can't remember the last time I had one.  Couldn't beat the $1.63 six-pack specials at Doc's of either Pabst or Old Style.  Also appreciated the Special Ex, too.  I had completely forgotten about that stuff!

For East Coasters Schaefer was the one (cheap) beer to have when you were having more than one!

My, oh my, Gettelman Brewery located in the shade of the humongous State Street Miller Brewing Complex was our beer of choice on tap in the fraternity house basement at 3005 W. Kilbourn - namely, because owner Richard Gettelman was an honorary member of the MU chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi profesional business fraternity.  C'mon, what fraternity member wouldn't buy his brother a beer?

You could get 24 bottles of returnable Huber at Pick n Save for $2.75 "back in the day." And yes, they were returnable. I think we'd get .75 back.

I was a bartender for awhile at Conway's.  They had a tap which said, "JJ's Brew," that was actually Special Export.

I spent sophomore year drinking 12 packs of Shaeffer, ($4.98 at Kampus Foods); when we moved off campus, kegs of Busch Light were $33, (delivered with two bags of ice and two sleeves of cups) from Greenfield, so that's all we drank.

Also miss $1 bottles of Leinie's O at Heg's.

We'd get the returnable Hamm's longnecks for $2.99 a case.  We had an old Coke machine that kept 3 cases cold at a time, so we could fill that sucker for under ten bucks.  The Hamm's had a bit of a sweet finish....mmmmmmmmmmm.  Haven't had a Hamm's in at least 15 years.

Quote from: tower912 on January 23, 2014, 02:53:51 PM$1.99 six packs of Mickey's big mouths.

The great Tom Waits immortalized Mickey's Big Mouths in the song "Frank's Wild Years" - the title character sits in his car laughing and polishing off a 6 pack of Mickey's while watching his house (which he set on fire) burn to the ground ("All chimney orange and fire engine red") - a love song to the middle class in California in the early 80s.

For me at MU, the beer of choice was Budweiser longnecks, $3.84 a case at Lenny's Tap (plus deposit). Usually when we returned a case we were short a few bottles (things seemed to get broken often back then) but Lenny never minded - gave us full credit anyway. Second favorite was anything else.

Beside the standard miller, miller lite 3 come to mind.

Red dog, Jacob best and icehouse which were actually premium beers back in the day, now you can still find icehouse in the gut rot section for really cheap

LOl!  I never bought but I remember seeing that at PickN'Save and thinking that was too inexpensive to even attempt to drink.  I still tell people that "when I was at college you get beer at the supermarket for......................"

The ultimate in cheap drinking was to buy a carry out 6 of PBR for $1.20 then stay in the 'Lanche and drink it. PBR was a premium brew compared with the RWB Archie had on tap for a quarter.

Yes, believe it or not, PBR is now considered Hipster beer.

When we told our kids about the old expression. "Red neck, white shoes, and Blue Ribbon beer", they could hardly believe it.

Nothing tops a fine Genesee Cream Ale when discussing retro beers. "Creamer Screamers" as they are known in Rochester, NY are sometimes used as a natural laxative.  I can still remember finding a case of this beer in Milwaukee and getting super excited.  The store had the nerve to up-charge the case, claiming it was a premium beer, however, I could not resist purchasing a case for myself.  Brought it back to McCormick and introduced my floor to Rochester"s finest!

Nothing like .79 for a 6 pack of Schlitz back in the Al McGuire days, or a $.15 bottle of Old Milwaukee at the Avalanche! Heck we even had it in the pop machine until the Pepsi guy made us take it out!

I'd say my down and dirty was Old Milwaukee.  I've had plenty of Blatz too.

My dad once described a beer during his MU days in the 50s called 'Old Bullfrog' that was so bad he and his buddies almost couldn't finish the case.  I said almost.

Its funny how much the cheap beer selection has changed. Some of those I have never even heard of. Currently the most common you see around campus (besides miller light of course) are Keystone Light, Natural (natty) light, and coors light with the occasional PBR.

I know when my daughter throws a 'cheap' beer party it's Keystone.

Not back in the day,  but cheap.

Trader Joes Simpler Times Lager,  and La Playa,  both very drinkable.

And out east,  back in the day cheap,  you have to go with Narragansett tall boys.

+1  Lowest price on the returnables I remember was $2.99 (Rhinleander), but usually $3.99 (Rhinelander, Leine's (!!), Old Milwaukee).

I did my buying from Richy, Pauly and the old man at Marquette Liquors (and worked there for my last year and a half on campus--including second semester senior year, when I had already finished all of my course work, and just worked a few jobs and tortured friends by going out every night).  Fond memories of delivering to the same old cat lady in the Ardmore apartments a 12 pack of Schaefer Tall Boys, a carton of smokes and a few cans of soup twice a week.  And she was a good tipper (Stop--don't even think that).

I remember buying a six of generic BEER at Pic n' Save.  That was used as a beer bong substitute: when the bongee wasn't looking, switching out the Bud for the BEER.  God were we stupid.  Beer bongs.

The bars--well, that's been covered in other threads, but the PBR (at the 'Lanche, transitioned from bottles to cups during my days), RW&B, and cheap quarter taps specials moving from bar to bar each night.

Finally, how about the "suitcases" of Busch ($5.99), Bud ($6.99) and later Miller products--I believe all first introduced in the early 80's.

As a teen one of my go-to beers was Strohs, when I started brewing beer in '93 and needed returnable bottles for bottling it was Huber Bock for about $5/case (there are probably 25 cases of those empties in my cellar I'm still refilling). The then owner of Huber bitched to the homebrewers that no one was returning his cases for the deposits so I guess I wasn't alone.  ;D

If ZFB can talk about taking a leak on an RA and BB player's desk in another thread, we can reminisce about bars also.

Corrected

Right. But pissing on a desk trumps old bars and beers.

The Rosetta Stone (corrections Welcome)

Caffreys - was the Ardmore and I believe the 2nd location for the Gym.
Murphy's - original Gym Location
Jimmy John's - About where the Lanche used to be
Field across Wells from the Al - Hegarty's
Qdoba - Grunts
Triangle Fraternity - O'Donahughes
18th and State - Lenny's Tap
15th and State - Greentree
12th (?) and State - Statehouse and Good Time Charlies
13th (?) and State - O'Padgetts
19th and Clyborne - Hegarty's Glocca Mora
21st and Wells- Can't remember the name.

Miss any?

Before Hegarty''s Glocca Mora I think it was a bar called Who's Inn. Also on Clybourne (between 16th and 17th) was the Black Spider. Owned by Bob Lehigh and his wife Toots. Many great bartenders, most notably Pat Devitt. The "Spider" moved to West Allis in around 1971.

I had many at the West Allis Black Spider.  I believe it was on 92nd, around Cleveland or Lincoln.

I also remember the special barrels from Greenfield Liquor that would be delivered with a bag of ice and sleeve of cups. What a great service.

That was a sad, sad May 4th in 1999(?) when that palace of underage provisions burned to the ground.

$2.99 a case of Old Milwaukee from Richie Frenn and the boys at Marquette Licquors, that 2.99 net after returns.  Many of which never got returned and were used as night stands, lamp stands, box springs etc.
Also, $.50 16 oz. drafts of red white and blue in my Alvalanche mug.

Okay, it wasn't a cheap beer, but it is a back-in-the-day beer.

Anyone remember Nude Beer?  Each label had one of a number of bikini-clad babes on it, but you could scratch off her bikini with your thumbnail, like it was an instant lottery ticket.

Current SSP (Limo) Office - Circle Inn, formerly known as the Meet Market
21th(ish) & Wells - Thoma's.  Met chick while enjoying some buddies perform in a band called Entering Chelmsford.  Ironically, we lived in Boston some years later and actually entered Chelmsford.

That, of course, was the "New Ardmore."  First time I ever tried imports--drank a fair amount of Bass Ale that first year.

The Ardmore is where I went when visiting MU for a weekend senior year in high school.  Had my first gin and tonic there at 17.  Thought it was cool that the seniors who were showing me around had their own mug hanging up at the Ardmore.

Was I the only one sneaking 40's of crappy malt liquor into the dorms?  When I lived in O'Donnell we would organize and a couple guys would go buy and a couple others would go to the basement which was actually at ground level.  The 40s were just small enough that they fit between the bars over the windows during the hand off.  Horrible horrible stuff.  King Kobra, Old English, Big Bear, Schlitz, Mickeys, etc etc

The "rod" tap handle at State House and an attractive blonde bartender every time she tapped a beer.

Miller High Life long necks always in friend's room at McCormick

Carling's Black Label, best and cheapest beer available while prepping for MU's slot at The Button spring break in Ft. Lauderdale (beat 'Bama, ND, others).

35 cent Schlitz drafts at The Midget Tavern. And the owner, a great old guy named Frank Herald, always gave us our first for free.

I can't remember what they had on tap at Harp & Shamrock. But we'd put a fiver on the bar at the start of the night, drink for hours, and the fiver would still be sitting on the bar at the end of the night. We left it as a tip for the bartender, the legendary Dan Fisher.

Miller Lite freshman year at The Gym. Of course, Red White & Blue at the 'Lanche ... then you had to break the bottle on the floor.

Before The State House was called that, it was something else, and they had 10-cent taps on Marquette game days.

Were forties even a thing in the early '80's?  I guess when you are legal to drink, you are not so worried about maximizing the size of the container.

There was legislation to ban 40 oz. in the 90's, although I don't think it ever passed in Milwaukee.  I'm also not sure when this began, (or if it's still in effect), but when I was at MU you couldn't purchase alcohol after 9:00.

Still can't.

As for the forties, I was trying to buy some around campus in 2005 and was told by the clerk at Dany's that the owners of the liquor stores around MU actually agreed not to stock them. They were/are available in other areas of the city.
