Wow!!!
What a F-ing game!!!
Stevie or Dawson? It's a toss up but I say Welcome back Stevie Taylor jr and JD is Stud of the Game!!!!
And our new PG!!
-
Dawson
-
Dawson.
-
I've been harder on him than anyone, but JT's three with 2:47 left was a huge turning point.
-
Dawson. Not the new starter yet, but definitely deserves big minutes.
-
DAWSON.
-

Second
-
Dawson!
-
Dawson.
Honorable mentions..
DG for late 4 pts in regulation and the big bucket and fts in OT
Steve for his pts and rebounds
Mayo for the shot
And Jake for knocking down some 3s.
-
Dawson!!!
-
Don't forget Todd guys. Love the win. Felt a bit bad for Mayo sulking bench after hitting that shot. Then again it kind of shows he's not as invested in the team based on body language.
-
And HUGE game by STjr.
-
It has to be Todd. You are all dumb if you think it isn't. Hold the ******* Mayo.
-
This is the toughest call all year.
-
Steve Taylor Jr.
He was the pick-up we needed.
Honorable mention to Todd Mayo for reminding us that he can replace Vander Blue.
-

Well said. Nod also to Todd for the huge shot (but not much else) and Ox for the free throws and some offense.
-
Steve Taylor Jr.
1A Todd Mayo
1B John Dawson
-
Don't forget Todd guys. Love the win. Felt a bit bad for Mayo sulking bench after hitting that shot. Then again it kind of shows he's not as invested in the team based on body language.
Not based on the interview he just gave. Well spoken.
-
Dawson had 12 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 TOs.
This in basically his first major role, on the road against Georgetown, not a Grambling.
STOG is for entire game, not shot of the game, which goes to Todd.
-
Dawson. Not the new starter yet, but definitely deserves big minutes.
you realize he started the second half right?
-
TWITTER TRACKA
John Dawson #3 trend in the US right now behind Richard Sherman and "#worserealityshows". Twitter has spoken.
-
Steve Taylor
-
Not based on the interview he just gave. Well spoken.
Thought the same after too....he's a tough cookie to figure out. Always go back and forth between that based on his demeanor. He's so laid back all the time.
-
you realize he started the second half right?
Yes. You realize it's one game, right?
I gave him credit as SOTG.
-
OTULE!! No question--he doubles Starks and Starks has no other plan other than to dribble off his foot. Stud of the game.
-
Todd for sending us into overtime
Dawson for his vision, 12 points, and making me optimistic about MUBB again
Devante for 20 points
Jake Thomas for 4 3s
and STJ for a very nice surprise.
SotG? All of them.
-
Steve, by the slimmest of margins over Dawson. Really don't know which to choose though - Dawson picked up #4 with what, 12 minutes left? And he seemed to play better defense after.
And an almost forgotten attaboy to Gardner. 20 points, 8-8 from the line, and involving his teammates with 5 assists. Got to get Mom to a few more games.
Don't forget Todd guys. Love the win. Felt a bit bad for Mayo sulking bench after hitting that shot. Then again it kind of shows he's not as invested in the team based on body language.
Loved the "we're +1" in his post-game interview. A Buzzism for conference play: win at home: 0, lose at home: -1, lose on the road: 0, win on the road: +1. He's getting it.
-
Do we seriously even need this thread. MAGIC DAWSON BABY!!!
-
Thought the same after too....he's a tough cookie to figure out. Always go back and forth between that based on his demeanor. He's so laid back all the time.
he tries to be a "pro," and i think he'd be a lot better of if he was just himself. when he was first asked to reflect on his 3, he started to crack a nice smile, then regained his demeanor. either way...it's a step in the right direction for MU.
-
Tough. Steve kept us in it in the first half. Dawson won OT for us.
-
Steve Taylor Jr.
1A Todd Mayo
1B John Dawson
I agree with this. Steve came in and carried this team for a long time. No one was stepping up and he did it for us. If he didn't carry the team we would have lost by double digits.
Mayo makes so much sense. Clutch shot and can't complain if he gets it. Great way to overcome a tough game where he struggled...suddenly I don't care about the rest of the game.
Dawson played an unbelievable game, especially in overtime. He really deserves recognition for his coming out party, but Steve with 14 pts 9 rbs earned it.
-
Johnny D.
-

That is Todd's look all of the time - whether he's in the game or on the best or in pre-game warmup.
Just a stoic guy.
-

Can't help but think his brother influences that. O.J. sort of acts the same way. Game face all the time. I'd just like to see Todd smiling and laughing out there with the guys.

Disagree. Based on the interview with Stu, he seemed plenty invested. He tends to carry a scowl on his face, doesn't mean he isn't invested. Focused?
SoG= 1. Dawson
2. Taylor
3. Mayo (there is no SoG if not for Todd's Clutch Shot)
-
my read on his interview is that he is a really shy guy.
-
Dylan Flood - w/o his constant cheering and support of his teammates, who knows where'd the team would be.
-
We could not have won this game without STJ. Welcome back Steven.
-

Right. I changed my mind a bit after seeing that interview. Get the focused part, but on the bench I would expect a bit less pensiveness.
-
5 solid candidates tonight:
Todd
Steve
Davante
Jake
John
I'll need to sleep on this.
-
Man, ST with a double double!!
DG with a great stat line (including 5 assists) himself.
But if JD doesn't play as much as he did, and as well as he did, we would not have been in this game.
John Dawson for SOTG.
-
Steve, by the slimmest of margins over Dawson. Really don't know which to choose though - Dawson picked up #4 with what, 12 minutes left? And he seemed to play better defense after.
+1
Dawson was excellent in OT. Love his confidence. Having said that, Steve stepped up in a huge way when we could not get anything going on offense. His first FG came after a 4-5 minute drought without a field goal.
Excellent game by Steve, JD, Todd, and props to Jake for hitting some big shots.
-
Dawson & STJ deserve co-studs. Mayo was god-awful outside of one shot. Yes, it was a big shot, but his 4-5 turnovers (including dreadful shot selection) were huge,as well.
-
Mayo for making it when it counted. We wouldn't have had a chance to win w/o him and he could use some pats on the back. Major kudos to STJr. and JD (who will definitely be getting more minutes).
-
Right. I changed my mind a bit after seeing that interview. Get the focused part, but on the bench I would expect a bit less pensiveness.
Thats Fair. He is an enigma. As another poster also mentioned, I loved the +1 reference. Perhaps he is starting to figure it out. Bring on 'Nova and lets turn this season around!
-
Dylan Flood - w/o his constant cheering and support of his teammates, who knows where'd the team would be.
so you're the cat that runs the marquette bball twitter account, a'ina?
-
Steve and Dawson were huge but I think davante was also really clutch. He hit a big 18 footer to cut it to 2 and also drilled all his free throws.
-
JD but STJr was terrific and as other folks said Todd made the key shot which is why he needs to be around at crunch time.
-
Gardner. Consistent start to finish. An efficient 20 points. 4 assists and 5 rebounds
-
Can't help but think his brother influences that. O.J. sort of acts the same way. Game face all the time. I'd just like to see Todd smiling and laughing out there with the guys.
Why? Having a few guys that are all business doesn't hurt.
-
Dawson & STJ deserve co-studs. Mayo was god-awful outside of one shot. Yes, it was a big shot, but his 4-5 turnovers (including dreadful shot selection) were huge,as well.
I agree co-studs. Steve put a lot of life into this team the first half and Dawson played like a senior go to guy in overtime.
-
I love that we have so many deserving candidates in a big road game against a
good decent team.
I'd choose Dawson because he was asked to do so much at such a crucial position and he delivered big time.
But absolutely no quibble with Taylor.
Solid honorable mention for Mayo, Gardner and Jamil. And even Otule, Derrick and Anderson played their roles very nicely.
-
Loved seeing Dawson and stj produce!
Gotta give it to Dawson though
-
Slight nod to Dawson over Taylor. What a pleasant surprise to mention those two names for SOTG candidates. Now I'm looking forward to Saturday.
-

Dawsanity has been waiting on this oppourtunity.....
So have I and Ners.....
The pundits can join us. We forgive you
-
If ever there was a need for co studs it is this game. Dawson and Steve played great. I give the nod to STJ though. Felt he turned the ship in the first half and was a nice jump start the team needed.
-
Dawson was decent in regulation, awesome in OT. But there is no OT without Steve and Todd "The Shot" Mayo. Give it to all three.
-
The best sign about this game is that Jake shot 67% from 3 and put in 12 pts and doesn't even get mentioned as a SOTG.
That says a lot, many guys stepping up today.
-
TEAM !!!
-

This in basically his first major role, on the road against Georgetown, not a Grambling.

Yahoo has Dawson's line at 12 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 turnover.
-

Agree. Starks and Rivera make some near impossible shots tonight and the refs weren't exactly on our side. Sounds cliche, but it took a real team effort to win this game.
-
Dawson. Hit clutch shots and his presence alone on the court freed up others. Those passes into the high post to Steve & Davante to work some high/low action? Those aren't available with Derrick running the point because his man sags back to cut it off. Dawson won this game for us on more than just box score stats. Really like the way the team looks with him out there.
-
Taylor by a wide margin
-
Jake didn't just hit threes tonight either. He was in for some tough minutes on D and went to the glass hard many times. His last 3 was one of the biggest shots we had all season.
-
Brad Autry deserves some praise tonight too. He was holding back an irate Buzz after the no-travel call near the end of the 4th (under a minute left), and he was close to getting T'ed up. If Brad doesn't restrain him, Georgetown could have ended the game right then and there.
-
Taylor by a wide margin
I thought Taylor was huge as well, yet none of the high post activity is even available if Dawson isn't in the game, as the opposition just sags Derrick's defender into the high post area. Dawson scored 7 in Overtime, all clutch. Dished out 4 assists. Team looked better on offense than it has in awhile.
Steve and Davante played really well together - and they were able to do so because both were able to operate effectively in the high post due to proper floor spacing for once due to a legit threat at PG position.
SOTG should be co-studs, Dawson and Taylor - but if only 1 choice, gotta be Dawson for the above reasons.
-
Yeah, Davante and Steve did play well together. Davante had some nice passes that Steve scored on. Steve worked really hard on the boards too. Good combo out there.
Sat in the 400 section tonight at the Verizon Center with some of Davante's family/friends in our section. It was fun listening to them cheer him on.

Was that his Mom leading the "auto-matic" chants in the OT?

Was that his Mom leading the "auto-matic" chants in the OT?
Could have been - they were mentioning automatic in regulation. =) I actually moved down in OT to get closer to the exit so i could high tail it out of there with my 7 and 9 year old sons who were really tired, but were also jumping up and down when Mayo hit that shot sending it to OT. Then I get home and find out school is cancelled tomorrow due to weather (and pending snow - DC area is full of wimps who can't drive in snow).
-
Lots of great contributions. Tough one.
1. Taylor
2. Dawson
3. Jake
4. Gardner
-
I'm gonna say Taylor just barely over Dawson.
Also, very impressed Dawson didn't foul out after picking up his fourth foul early (12min left?)... really thought it was inevitable.
-
Dawson and STJ as co's.
Mayo hit the big three. Sure, he gets kudos, but STJ carried MU (when Gardner didn't) with a double-double after riding pine for a long time and Dawsome played with FOUR FOULS through the 2nd half and OT AND hit shots.
-
Several candidates but Dawson for solving our most vexing problem this season.
-
I can't believe this name hasn't been mentioned once in three pages. Jamil Wilson. He stuffed the stat sheet today: 10 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, three blocks. That's an impressive all around performance. Plus, that dunk was really what put the momentum going in our favor.
I would add though that Dawsome, STJ, Gardner, Jake, and Mayo are all deserving candidates
-
Steve Taylor Jr, but also nice games from Gardner, J Wilson, Thomas and of course, Dawson. Not to mention Mayo, whose 3 pointer has kept our season on life support.
-
Dawson or a split Dawson/StJR ticket...both of them were key to us winning. Dawson forced Gtown to respect his jump shot (and even made a number of them with a player closing in) StJR gave gtown something else to worry about in the paint (and reminded us of the potential he brings)
-
Steve Taylor Jr with a 1A to Dawson. Steve Taylor was a spark in both halves. Welcome back Steve. Good to see Dawson break out yesterday. There obviously is some potential if he gets minutes to play.
-
STJr
-
Without Taylor, Mayo's three does not matter and without Mayo's three Dawson does not score 7 in overtime. Everything else does not matter if Gardner does not make all of his free throws. Jake had 4 threes. Give it to the team.
-
Buzz reads MUScoop.
Dawson gets 31 minutes, DWill 12 minutes.
MUScoop = STOG
-

Book him, Dano.
-
The Bench.
We have one. Georgetown doesn't.
-
Steve Taylor. He provided offense that MU desperately needed.
-

Exactly!
-
Book him, Dano.
Maybe I will, maybe I wont!!!
-
Was that his Mom leading the "auto-matic" chants in the OT?
That was Mama SHEESH.
-
Taylor. He was fantastic and reminded us of how promising he is. 14 pts and 8 boards in 23 minutes. He was a key factor in busting the zone and opening up opportunities for Gardner (who was also excellent).
Props to Dawson as well for being the dominant factor in the OT and showing what our offense can be with a PG who can score. Excellent poise for a seldom used freshman in a big road game.
Huge shot for Todd but an otherwise mediocre game for him.
-
Taylor
-
Steve. No question about it.
-
Dawson, barely over Gardner. I loved Taylor's game, but it took 14 FGA to get 14 points. Jake had 12 points on 6 FGA.
-
Dawson. Someone needed to step up in OT and JD was the man
-
John Dawson edging STj slightly
-
Jake didn't just hit threes tonight either. He was in for some tough minutes on D and went to the glass hard many times. His last 3 was one of the biggest shots we had all season.
Thomas was 4 of 6 from three... what do you consider "hitting threes?"
whoops cancel that - misread your comment
-
Taylor by a wide margin
Is that like a Larry Craig Wide Stance?
-
Was that his Mom leading the "auto-matic" chants in the OT?
Did you see her face? No doubt he is his mother's son. Spitting image. Well, without the beard.
-
Yo
Is that like a Larry Craig Wide Stance?
you're reaching here, sir
-
STJ
-
Without Taylor, Mayo's three does not matter and without Mayo's three Dawson does not score 7 in overtime. Everything else does not matter if Gardner does not make all of his free throws. Jake had 4 threes. Give it to the team.
Stop trying to over think this and pick a player. Dawson or Taylor? No Team Studs!
-
STJ
-
I think it was the popular vote anyway, but I had to go with STJr, immediately provided a scoring spark off the bench, had the most rebounds for Marquette, and did it all in just 23 min (highest ppm on the team).
I *hope* Dawson keeps it up, If so I can see him getting on the SOTG board soon.
-
Although I voted Dawson, I love seeing STJ's mug in the SOTG box. Can't complain, hope to see him up there a few more times this year.
-
No quarrel whatsoever. What I find interesting is that's Steve's second STOG and he played meaningful minutes in approximately ........ 2-3 games.
Look, I'm not interested in another discussion about whether he should have been playing. He didn't look ready to me at all a month ago. Monday he looked ready and my hope is that fact bodes well for the rest of the year.
-
I just looked at the 2013-2014 SOTG tally and Steve has 2 and Jamil has only 1. Given their respective minutes, experience, supposed leadership roles, that is really, really surprising to me. But then again, maybe not.
If Steve can be a contributor from here on out the rest of the season, this could really be a turning point.
