Title: National TV Color Guys
Post by: The Lens on January 13, 2014, 11:13:34 AM
We heard KO say it and I know other have too.  They come on air and talk about all the criticism of Derrick Wilson's game.

Well considering MU is in a town where sports talk radio is 95% Packers and 5% Brewers; and where the paper just writes game recaps, where is KO (and others) getting this?  Are KO and these guys trolling Scoop, IWB & Dodds?

It's not like we're Kentucky where a ton of mainstream outlets are breaking us down daily.

KO, are you reading this?  If so, hi!  And thanks for March, 1994.

If I were a commentator and knew very little about this team, I would read this board. Its actually very informative.

Btw I was thinking the same thing when KO mentioned that about our beloved Derrick Wilson

Loved K.O., and agree - thanks for March of 1994 and for rescuing the Marquette basketball program.  Think K.O., may have been the single most important hire for the MU program in its history.  Was a real crossroads at that time - and K.O., showed that you could still win at MU, even with crappy practice facilities.

I'm sure K.O., gets his info from Buzz - they have a good relationship.  And Buzz/staff are very aware of what gets written here, as are most coaching staffs aware of their fans message boards.

If KO ever uses the term "buzz speak" or "quality bigs" then we will have the answer if he visits Scoop.

Kevin "Willie" O'Neill?  I guess Joanie isn't our biggest celebrity poster anymore!

I think KO gets this from Buzz, too.  The thing is, after KO talks about how unfair it is, he himself works Derrick's limitations ("They can't get the ball inside because no one is guarding Derrick Wilson") into the broadcast often.  The legitimate broadcast and print media are generally very forgiving of the shortcomings of college players, especially players like Derrick, who were not particularly highly touted and are not controversial in behavior.

I don't think Buzz or staff is spending time reading message boards, either.  Based on what he's said in the past, I think he gets a lot of the criticism via email.

Wait!  Buzz a good friend with a former coach??  I will not believe it until Lenny asks his BFF Goodman (the official spokesman for Buzz Williams) to confirm.

I'm betting the majority of "source" for this type of thing is Homer.  He's pretty tied into the MU community and we know he posts/reads the board.  He knows all the tv guys, especially KO so I'm sure they talk.  I'm guessing most of the tv guys are going to a fan board for perspective.

I thought he said "the traditional from deep!" after a Jake trey but it might have been my friend Randy.

Sorry guys but KO does not get his info from this board.  The job of a color guy is not just to show up on game day and call the games.  They typically watch the previous games in preparation for a game.  Additonally, they know their upcoming schedule and will watch live games in advance if their schedule allows it.  lastly, Saturday was not the first game KO has done for us this year, so he has seen us play before.

For all the BBAll savants that want to talk about how bad Derrick is only need watch the last 10 minutes of the first half of the at Xavier game to see the diffenrece of Derrick in and when he is not.  He is not dynmaic offensively, If Jamil, jake and Todd can consistantly knock down jumpers we can spread the floor even if derrick isnt.

No way I know this but Buzz must read this board. After all, this is where much of the criticism of De. Wilson comes. And that criticism surely has generated Buzz's hallucinatory mushroom laced statement that Derrick is a "game changer"

KO criticizes Derrick constantly.

He's usually fairly nice about it, even once saying that he was praying Derrick would hit a couple of 3-pointers, but he has talked at least a half-dozen times about Derrick's serious limitations and the effect of Derrick's shortcomings on the offense overall.

So I hope he's including himself when he talks about "Derrick's critics."

You've definitely shown yourself to be anything but a basketball savant.  Derrick was -9 in the X game, Daswon was 0 in +/-.  And, Jamil sat out the whole first half while Dawson played.  Dawson entered the game with us up 15-14, Jamil to the bench at that time - we got to 26-25.  A few turnovers by other MU players, and an easy miss in close by DG, and we fell down 10...got back to 6 at half.  Dawson got us from -10 in second half to -1, Derrick returned at 5 minute mark and we fell behind by 8, within 2:45.  But, don't let the above facts, nor our teams record suggest this team is better off with Derrick at the PG for 30 minutes per game.

Give it a rest, man. You read an article shortly after Buzz was hired that stated that during the transition period they were talking daily. Nothing surprising. The whole head coach thing
came out of the blue, and Buzz being Buzz I'm sure he had hundreds of questions for TC. For some reason this made you imagine that Buzz and TC were BFFs. And that they were each other's "boys" who wouldn't recruit against one another. And that almost 6 years later they were still talking daily and remained BFFs. You didn't know Buzz. You didn't know Tom Crean. You knew nothing about their relationship. You just assumed and imagined. A respected sportswriter who knows them both and is close with at least one of them blew your assumptions and imaginings out of the water and exposed them for the fictions that they are. I get that you feel foolish and want to shoot the messenger, but Jeff Goodman has no horse in this race. If Buzz and TC were close, he would have said so. If he didn't know enough to comment he would have said as much. What possible reason could he have to make something up?

KO was very specific about Derricks limitations and how he was hurting the offense during the Seton Hall broadcast. As you point out he does it in a respectful way. I find it refreshing .
