if we're going to make our run he needs to be starting.
I have said it all year.
28 minutes a game minimum
preferably in the 30s
It isn't even debatable the impact of just having him on the floor is.
co-sign. he's our only dynamic scorer and plays solid d.
Mayo needs to be the starting PG. College basketball is all about the PG. Even if he doesn't pass as well as Derrick or Dawson, a team is only successful if the PG can go get a basket when needed.
Wish he wasn't so inconsistent. He could definitely be the player we need to be successful, but he's been TERRIBLE in most of the losses this year. Could easily have 2-4 more wins if he could come close to repeating today's performance every game.
Agree totally. Knows when to drive and shoot, plays good D and handles the ball pretty well. Hits his FTs.
Mayo would be a starter on most BE teams.
Any reason why mayo hasn't gotten a minute at pg this season ? Seems like he could handle a few possessions there per game. It's embarrassing when you have to take your starting pg out at the end of tight games because of how bad he is at breaking the press and from the line.

While, I don't want to turn this into another Buzz is wrong, I know more thing...
A major reason for Todd's inconsistency is his minutes inconsistency. There are many times when he pulls todd after the smallest blunder.
Todd is a guy who needs a good 7-10 minutes straight. Let him get a feel for the game. That way he doesn't force anything or put too much pressure on himself.
Buzz just said on post game radio bradcast. Mayo needs to play for us...needs to play a lot more and he was great. He plays great when he does not let his emotions get the best of him. Very telling.

I hope you're right and Buzz figures it out too, because a good guard could go a long way for this team.
Mayo's handle was awful last year. It was great today. I think he might be able to play the 1. I'd like to see him tested there.

Probably because it would negate his offense, just like Wade plays better of the ball. Plus he is sort of turnover prone when he handles the ball too much. But then that's my point of view. I do really like how he plays so not being negative on the kid.

Bingo - Would be awesome if Todd got as much slack as Derrick Wilson gets.

IMO, you could not be more wrong. It's not just what you do on the court. DW has been a solid student-athlete, on and off the court. No question Todd has had to earn his way back, and rightfully so. DW has done nothing but be a stand up guy and Buzz will always have his back for that, and I agree with that approach.

I think you have identified the issue, Buzz rewards good character. Hopefully that matches with the talent, however it doesn't in all cases. That is why we are 10-7. The good news is Buzz is starting to move in the direction of talent first ,evidenced by Davante starting and mor minutes for Mayo.
As much as I bad mouthed Mayo----I take back everything. Played like a man out there as no one else had the guts to shoot. Think someone slipped Kevin O'Neill as "Mickey" the way he talked about Der. Wilson
and Thomas.
There's no question that Mayo should start and play minimum 30 minutes. The big question is why buzz plays D Wilson more than 10 minutes.

The whole team has been pretty terrible in loses.

And there have been 2-4 of those where just one guy who should be one of the veteran leaders playing up to the standard he has set for himself would have meant the different between a loss and a win.

Yup. Derrick. Juan. Jake. Jamil. Todd. Ox.
Don't try and imply Todd as the veteran leader.
Give him consistent minutes and see what happens. New Mexico game shifted when he first came in.
As far as guards go, Mayo is our most complete player. Can handle, shoot, shoot FTs, penetrate, pass and play D.
Yes, we got "good Todd" on Saturday and actually for a few games now. Can he continue at this level (or higher) with consistency through the rest of the season?
He's gotta be looking at an unemployed Vander with nearly similar stats and wondering how he can get to the point where he makes some $$$ playing this game in a year or so. He'll have to be better than Vander!
Buzz wants people like Mayo (Thomas) and Gardner (Anderson) to get pissed off and force him to make changes in the starting lineup. It's obvious these guys are not putting the work in otherwise they'd be starting. This is how you build a team...accountability. Either thse guys need to be accountable for the way they practice or the other guys need to start holding them accountable. Same goes for Derrick Wilson. If Dawson was out working or outperforming him in practice, he'd see more time.
And yes, I am aware Gardner has been starting, but it's apparent Buzz made that move while holding his nose.
You can say what you want about Buzz, but he's said a million times it's not his team...it's the players team. The lineups and substitutions reflect what he sees behind the scenes.
You know who's to blame for our disappointing results? It ain't Buzz. It's the players.
Sure Todd has had some very bad games. Who on this team hasn't. That is why we are underperforming. There is no Senior Jae or Lazar who you can count on every game both offensively and defensively. But given the players we have now is the time to put Todd out there and keep him out there and live with what you get.
While there are obviously some differences, I think there are a number of similarities between Mayo's game and Dwight Buycks' that foretell Mayos role on this team. They also have nearly identical arcs on MUScoop.

My God, Ners, could you PLEASE give it a rest. The thousands of words you've written about Derrick since your first self imposed moratorium on ripping him was unfortunately and inexplicably lifted are enough already. We know that you think he's the worst starting point guard in the Big East. We know you think he should be removed from the rotation. Your eye test (you say strange things like "Dawson sees the floor better" - huh?) trumps what Buzz sees in games, practices and the locker room. When Buzz says he's the best defensive player he's coached I can only assume you think he's a fool or a liar. You're quick with stats that point to his weaknesses (yes, everybody here acknowledges that he has major weaknesses) but if someone points out his assist to turnover ratio is off the charts good that doesn't count.
You have an opinion. Some agree, others don't. In another thread you even concede you're hoping for him to fail. Whatever. The chances that you'll get any new converts or lose any of your allies is pretty much nil. You've been piling it on this kid for what seems like forever. Please stop.

He's a junior and theoretically the most talented guard on the team. Maybe he's not a veteran leader, but he definitely should be.
Why can't he be a veteran leader? This is his 3rd year, same as Jamil and maybe being the "man" will be good for his consistency. Might also help Jamil by taking an unwanted burden from his shoulders...this was supposed to be Vander's team.
