Title: Same Results Unless Buzz Changes This Line Up
Post by: muchamps on January 03, 2014, 02:54:24 PM

Its been said here many times, for weeks.I wrote about it five weeks ago. You can't win by not playing you Best team. You can't give up major minutes to your bench players and in some cases, walkons (Jake) with out calculating what you've lost before you try to save the game. I'll say it again, your 3 best players need to play 32-35 min.
Here's an exercise, name a top 20 team that has their leading scorer on the bench and when he is in the game the second and third best players sit down.
We will lose "almost all" games against the top 25 if this continues. "The Best", group could be amazing. It may cost us that special recruit or a freshman who knows he is better now. It will be a miserable season, knowing what we could have been.
Buzz has eroded the confidence of Gardner and Mayo,it seems he just doesn't like Gardner, from the beginning;his weight and picking at him all the time, the substitution's, penalizing him for every mistake.I'm surprised Gardner stayed.
Maybe we have a great recruiter and a confused coach now, displaying some kind unexplained loyalty,(Otule) without regard for winning. I'm hoping the "losing" clears the mind for Buzz.

You truly have no idea what you're talking about.

I think if you compared the stats of Thomas, JJJ and Mayo, you would be surprised how close they are.  No one doubts that JJJ and Mayo have more potential, but Thomas has been solid.

As has been said here before, the reason JJJ or Mayo haven't unseated Jake isn't Buzz...it's JJJ and Mayo.

Well then, thank God you started another thread about it.

Lord knows we need more incoherent rambling like yours about how Buzz is throwing away a magical season because he is too stupid to see which players are good and which aren't.

Well said, its just whats happening. Try this, watch mayo defend, then watch Jake be a step behind, every time, he can't stop any  point we have played.

I'll explain it to you: Otule has outplayed Gardner this season.

Yes, Gardner is more of a scoring threat -- although even in that department, Otule has taken a step forward while Gardner has regressed, including at the FT line -- but Otule is so superior a defender that it isn't funny.

If you think Buzz is only playing Otule out of loyalty, you must be watching games with your back to the TV.

Sorry, not quite. Gardner's scoring is up this year, from 11.5 last year to 12.9 this year.

You know ... you're right. It only feels as though he has regressed. My mistake ... but I still think Otule has outplayed him all-around this season.

I don't know if I would categorize it as Otule outplaying Gardner this year, I'd say that Otule has outperformed expectations for him thus far.

Odd stats for these two players. Otule has started 93 of the 106 games he has played in at MU, while Gardner has only started 12 out of the 109 he has played in, and none as a junior or senior. Points wise though, Gardner has 990 to Otule's 534. For their careers, Davante has averaged 17.7 minutes per game and Otule 16.6.

Hope you all were at the game,DG at 28 & 6. Yea that Otule is certainly the answer. You all sound like Buzz on the radio after the game, saying the game was won when Jamil saved an out of bounds pass? This again was Buzz justifying not starting DG, while the big guy just buried that logic and most of yours, in the many post above.

Davante only went off today because of derricks play and the lineup around him. Relax. Buzz is right.

Derrick's play?  Seriously?  2 points on 2 of 6 from the FT line, 0 of 1 from the field, 3 assists and 2 turnovers, and the amazing defense creating 0 steals?

If Jamil won the game because he dove for a loose ball, then that makes up for his at least two stupid fouls, so all he did was even it out. Jamil is good for at least one or two of those brain farts every game.

This season is going to be frustrating and I can deal with that. My hopes are that we are better prepared talent wise a year from now. Great programs have down years and they find way to regroup. I read on a thread it appears that Buzz might not like this team like past years and I agree with that. This years team is tough to embrace, even if they were winning. Cannot remember a team post Dukiet that I have had more issues liking guys than this years team.

Did you notice that with Davante starting Marquette was losing by 11?  It doesn't matter who starts it is who finishes. Not only did Davante finish the game but Buzz ran play after play for him.  Buzz must truly hate him.

Gardner doesn't start but he basically is in the game early enough that the only thing he misses is the tip. As a below the rim player this is probably a good thing.

These are his first mentioned by getting some stat. It is likely he was in earlier than these times.
Southern - first mention in Ply-by-play 17:38
Grambling - first mention is 12:21
OSU - 17:51
NHU -14:39
ASU - no play by play.
CSF - 15:33
GW - 15:38
SDSU - 13:38
Wisconsin - 15:28
Iupui - 13:21
Ball -15:13
NM - 15:41
Sam -13:06
Creighton -17:27
DePaul -started

If you want to debate he should have more playing time then ok but that he needs to start is more about ego.  Against DePaul, Gardner got 31 minutes.

Really? I'd say Jamil, Derrick, Jake, Chris, Juan and Steve are among the most likable guys to ever wear the Warrior's uniform. Todd's issues are well documented (though I like everything I've seen from him lately) and Davante's a bit goofy but a good guy. I don't know the freshmen but I wouldn't call any of them "unlikable" based on what we know so far. I think Buzz's fear is that we may be a little too nice, not the other way around.

You may be well be right and I am big Jamil fan. Just seems there is disconnect across the board this season. That coupled with lack of talent jades my thoughts. Liked Jake a helluva lot more last season as role player. Not saying the guys are not good guys, just on the court I have problems.

Goose,

Agree that there's plenty to be dissatisfied with on the court. Sorry if I misinterpreted your post.
