This team has not beaten any decent opponent.
Admittedly, I am a naysayer, and Lenny has documented it (damn him), but I have got to say I do not see the personnel or the coaching philosophy that is going to resurrect this season.
It's disappointing, given the star ratings, but they don't mean squat.
I don't see us doing better than 1-3 vs. GT & VU. We will either have to win the BE tournament or improve significantly. I don't see either happening.
If they behave like last year's team and make me look like an ass, Lenny, I will be happy for you to quote me. Looking forward to the NIT finals, assuming we will be able to get by Youngstown St.

Southern was a "decent" opponent, George Washington was a better than "decent" opponent. So, there's two.

This statement reveals the desperation of the situation.
Southern is 3-8 with losses to Middle Tennessee State, Tulane, Arkansas-Little Rock, Denver and Louisiana Tech (by 19!). If this is a decent opponent, then so is New Hampshire. Please.
George Washington was a good win. That's it. Let's not pretend otherwise.
As long as Buzz is going to go with the older, "more experienced" lineup, expected a slow development of the younger players.
I would love to win every game but if I'm going to lose, I'd rather lose with the freshmen getting time than with Jake and Derrick.

You got me on Southern, yet your statement still shows that the original post in this thread was hyperbole.

Yup, we need to keep proclaiming that Southern win--and the ass kicking of Grambling.
No team wins regularly when playing 4 vs 5 on offense. Derrick passes wide open looks continuously and his defender sinks to the lane denying half of the passing channels.

+1 - But as others have pointed out, clearly Derrick must be our best option at PG - or Dawson would be getting more minutes.
Just doesn't make any sense - we've seen the movie over and over and over, and generally it has the same conclusion - really challenged offensive play due to Derrick's offensive limitations. Perhaps Dawson isn't better, as Dawson hasn't shot it well from the perimeter either, yet the sample size is so much smaller, and Dawson's stretches of minutes have been so fragmented, usually 2-4 minutes at a time of run - it is hard to get in a flow, rhythm - you also don't just want to come in a game and immediately start throwing up shots....so it's just been really hard in my opinion for us to get a sense of what Dawson can be.
We are not very good at this point and that is fact. We have three very, very talented freshmen and that are going to make us better. I have not given up on the season just yet. 77Warriors nailed it and my gut says the young guns play more after the holidays.
You guys love that mu has been known as a tough, hard working team since buzz has been coach and then bitch about how he achieves that. He is not going to compromise how he coaches to satisfy some people on a fan board. If developing the culture buzz wants means sitting some freshmen that don't get it yet then so be it. It will help us in the long run. Buzz has proven himself since he has been here and he deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Yup, in Buzz we slurp, uh..trust.
Hairy
Agreed on Buzz and his culture. Buzz is my guy and not going to bash him for any decision he makes. That said, any great leader adapts to the situation at hand. In today's game you better be a great communicator to convince someone with JJJ's talent that sitting is best for him. Young studs want to play and you have to recruit the right kids for Buzz's culture or you might lose kids quickly.

Don Shula loved the running game. He loved pounding Csonka, Kiick and Morris into the line over and over again. In Super Bowl VII, Bob Griese threw 11 passes. In Super Bowl VIII, Griese threw 7 passes.
SEVEN passes! And Griese was considered one of his era's great QBs!!!
But when Shula got Dan Marino, he all but abandoned the running game. He had arguably the best QB in football history and he wasn't going to have that QB throw only 7 passes in a game while handing off to RBs who weren't Csonka and Morris. So Shula adapted and the Dolphins continued making the playoffs year after year.
OK, important distinction: While we might like the potential of MU's freshmen, I don't think any of us would be bold enough to claim that those kids are the college basketball equivalents of Marino, Csonka and Morris.
So while I want Buzz to adapt, I also do trust that the man who sees them every day in practice -- and the man who wants to win as much as every single one of us here -- is honestly doing what he thinks is best for the program.
It's not easy being king. That's why Buzz gets the big bucks.

heh, you just proved Hairy's point. Shula changed his ways, all but abandoned the running game, and gave Marino the keys and let him throw throw throw. how did that work out for Danny boy and coach shula?

Ha, that's true. But mu 82 is talking about something totally different. Changing your style to fit your personnel is a good thing. Compromising your culture, discipline and work ethic is a bad thing.

Yeah, true that.
As a person on jsonline.com pointed out, we are 0-5 (all of our losses) in the games Derrick and Jake have played greater than a combined 50 minutes. At some point Buzz has to throw out his trust for them and give other guys a chance. He has given Derrick and Jake chances to play in big games and important situations and they have failed every time.

Jake didn't fail last night. That's for sure. Same with both of them vs. ASU.

That's not a telling stat, IMO. Those guys play more minutes against the better teams, which of course are the teams we are more likely to lose to. You know we are 5-0 when Dylan Flood plays.
I agree guard play is our biggest problem. Right now Buzz thinks big minutes from JT + DeW gives us the best chance to win. I am not convinced he's wrong. Sometimes it is frustrating to watch.
