We take a look at the "key" players for Ball State and a look at Deonte Burton's first 5 game performance v. second five games.

Not a Marquette fan but follow Wisconsin High School kids once they get to college. The averages over these 5 games seem a little misleading because against the best competition (Wisconsin, GW, and SDSU) he only had one good game. In fact over the last 5 games he has scored 4, 2, and 2 in three of the games. He has more fouls than rebounds 13-10 and three times more turnovers than assists at 7-2.
He will be a special talent but this screams why small samples can be a little misleading. The writer talks about throwing out Grambling but why don't you throw out a really bad IUPUI team too? Not trying to troll but just felt like the article was a little off. I watched some of the SDSU game and he really stood out and then watched the Wisconsin game and he wasn't much of a factor on offense and a huge liability on defense. Typical freshman. He will be interesting to watch come conference play. The new foul rules seem to really favor a guy like him
Excellent points and I agree about small samples being problematic. Our point behind the analysis was to show his progression and that his role is steadily getting bigger. I hope we weren't misleading. We talk about throwing out Grambling State in jest and kept it in. True, IUPUI didn't appear to be that much better. Thanks for taking the time to read and provide feedback. Always appreciated.

Makes sense. As a Badger fan I usually don't root for Wisconsin kids who end up at Marquette but Burton was never going to become a Badger so I will watch him with intrigue

That's a rather parochial attitude

Don't get me wrong I am not rooting for Marquette or anyone that the Badgers also recruited :) Burton just never seemed like he fit at UW and I am very intrigued to see how a guy with his athleticism but size limitations plays out.
It is a question that we are all watching. His height says he can't play big. His width says he can't play small. He is clearly skilled offensively, but how will he be defensively?

Just that some here are more orthodox in their thinking

He is so intriguing to me. Reminds me of Tucker but shorter and more built. He seems like a guy who will dominate if he is a on a team that can get out and run. His defense is definitely a work in progress. He was pretty rough on that end against UW

I m not sure why he cannot play small. He is quicker than he looks and he can shoot the jumper. He needs to learn not to reach on defense.
So far, it doesn't appear he can guard small. Or hit the 3.

He can. Some guys won't be good guys for him to defend, but MBD is versatile. Most def can hit the trey, but this year we need him concentrating on getting to the rack. In time, my friend.
Deonte reminds me of a young, left handed George Thompson. He is taller than George who played forward at 6'2", George could dominate any defensive player with his quickness, power and explosion to the hoop. At 6'4 or 5" Deonte may be "Brute Force II".
