I think it is now crucial that Garrett signs as our third recruit

Not likely. Quotes from Stutz's father from a Scout article today:

QuoteMarquette is an interesting topic. Stutz's father doesn't feel the interest but his son seems to keep the Golden Eagles in the mix. "We've never talked to Coach Crean and he cancelled his home visit but Coach Buckley continues to call him and we've never had a serious conversation. I don't think there's a whole lot of interest there but Garrett thinks there is."

QuoteBy mid-July he had 40 schools from 10 conferences. Now we're down to three."

It seems O'Tule is basically the only option left at center.

The father may be down to three but its a good thing the kid isn't yet.  Remember Kentucky still hasn't offered him a schollie

it sounds like we can get him if we want him.  the kid seems to want us to be interested.  i dunno...

I think I'd rather have O'Tule.  I know nothing about Stutz, but I think O'Tule would fit well in our program.  Since he had such a late growth spurt, it probably means he played guard or a wing position his whole life.  This would give him several advantages.

First, he would see the game from a guard's perspective.  I think this is crucial when trying to gain post position, making outlet passes, passing out of a double-team, etc.

Second, a big man in our system needs to be able to run the floor (like Barro and I'm hoping Mbakwe), and he would be very used to this, if not already proficient at it.

Third, he probably has good hands for catching entry passes and making dribble-moves in the paint.  In other words, the anti-Burke.

But like I said, I know nothing about Stutz, O'Tule just seems like a good option alongside Mbakwe.

Stutz also had the late growth spurt.  He's grown 5 inches in one year and over a foot in the last 3, Otule has grown 7.

And from what I understand, Stutz was probably more skilled offensively when he was shorter, and that has carried over when he has grown.  Otule was not particularly a good guard so he doesn't have those skills.

What's Stutz' height/wingspan?  O'Tule looks like he could be a shot-blocking rebounding machine.  But your description of Stutz leaves me wanting either.

Bottom line is we need to sign one or the other now.

we needed one or the other whether or not we got shumpert.  i say we land one of the bigs and call it a day.  i don;t like our odds with swopshire now that we got fulce AND erik williams.  I know people are talking about signing a 4th guy, but our 09 class could be huge, so we may want to bank our "extra" schollie that is contingent on DJ leaving.  we are final 3 for maurice creek, high interest for erik murphy, and very much in on johnnie lacy and jamil wilson.  granted, we swung and missed on a lot of big names this year, but there is no point in just wasting a scholarship on a small timer when you ahve the potential to grab a big fish the following year...

He's seen them both practice, that's what he was doing in Texas a few weeks back.  I don't believe he has seen Fulce in a game, but he has seen Williams.

No different than you criticizing them despite never having seen them play at all.

I think the Texas guys are players that Buzz is very familiar with and if Buzz was recruiting them for Gillespie than they have talent.
