Duane Wilson should take a lesson from Junior Cadougan
It's difficult to argue one way or another whether Junior Cadougan made the smart decision in 2010 when, just four months removed from surgery to repair an Achilles injury in his left foot, he returned to the Golden Eagles lineup for the last 16 games of his short-lived freshman season. The decision was his to [...]<img alt="" border="0" src="http://stats.wordpress.com/b.gif?host=painttouches.com&blog=28348875&post=9866&subd=painttouches&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" />

OK....if "It's difficult to argue one way or another whether Junior Cadougan made the smart decision in 2010...", how come you can declare that "Duane Wilson shouldn't make that same decision?"
So while you SAY it is difficult to argue one way or another, you certainly are really only arguing one way.
That being said, Junior coming back on January 23 from a ruptured achillies I think is much different than Duane coming back on December 7 from a stress fracture. I don't think they are much comparable.

Holy cow, over two days I have agreed with two of Sultan's posts. I guess there is still hope for both of us.

Correct, it's an opinion. It's not black and white, but I'm taking a side.
And they're comparable because they are freshmen who missed the first two months of practices and games and would be set back too far to make any kind of impact.
And Dawson is going to start over Duane in 2016 according to the article?
Duane Wilson should do what is best for himself and his family. He should listen to doctors, listen to Buzz, listen to those closest to him who have his best interests at heart, and then do what is best for Duane.

But without mentioning the type of injury, and what effect that may have on how they play...and that Duane might be returning a full six weeks earlier, that makes a big difference.
But back to the first point, you say it's not black and white and you are taking a side. OK...but then you end with "If he decides to play this season, it will be the right call because it's the one he made."
Why are you arguing against yourself?
If Cadougan would have redshirted like you think he should have, it's highly likely that Duane wouldn't be here at all. He was the first point to sign and he/his people liked his odds of playing immediately and eventually supplanting Derrick. With Cadougan here as a senior, Duane may have looked for a better fit to play immediately. We'll never know.

That's the big unknown - what could he do this season? If it's 48 ineffective minutes where he doesn't make a field goal I'd hope he would trade it in for the option (whether he takes it or not) to play 1000 minutes as the team leader in 2017-18. But if he's good and caught up enough to be in the rotation and playing 15 minutes per game by the end of the year it's going to be rough to sit around until November.
This team needs all the help it can, especially at point guard. Even at the end of games, think how much better a free throw shooter he is compared to Derrick. By him coming back, it would at least make teams respect the outside shot when he's in. Unlike with Derrick where everyone crams inside because he can't shoot. I think in reading articles and interviews with Duane, he has aspirations to play at the next level and would likely not want another year. Who knows where we'll be 4 years from now... Suit up Duane and give us a boost!!
How much of the push for a Duane Wilson redshirt year is the fact that it could mean, potentially, another season playing alongside (and perhaps some extra enticement for) Diamond Stone?

Diamond Stone will likely be a one and done or at max a 2 year college player so I don't think that this would factor in at all.

You can't possibly believe that Duane Wilson is going to play tomorrow.

Good point.

Because it allows him to be right either way. Maybe I should have considered this technique when I said Blue would get drafted.

No...I think he'll actually play next week. But yeah, I didn't really compare apples to apples there....

It would be the right call for him personally; not Marquette. Maybe that wasn't clear.

And if he is back for IUPUI (which I also believe likely), it makes sense to get him in. Two weeks and three cupcakes will go a long way to finding a spot in the rotation to contribute. In Junior's case we were halfway through the conference season and the margin of error was zilch in every game so it wasn't going anywhere from the start.
Several good points by everyone but I think he plays this year and he will make the team better this year. If that is the best decision for him who really knows?
The reality is that (assuming a player stays) every freshmen should redshirt. A player will almost always contribute more as a 5th year senior then they will as a freshmen. However, even a lesser contribution as a freshmen is often needed. Imagine having Novak for a fifth year. However, you then lose his two threes against Missouri to send the game into overtime. Without those two baskets, we do not get a chance to dismantle Kentucky and go to final four. Crean did not redshirt Embakwe when he got injured, but he left so it did not matter. Buzz did not redshirt Otule when he broke his foot as a freshmen. That worked out, because he kept getting hurt and got two redshirt years after that.
Let's say we have a highly touted transfer who had to sit out the first semester but could start playing in mid-December. We'd want him on the court ASAP, even though he hasn't had very much time working with his teammates. That's doubly true if he brings a specific skill set that meshes with Marquette's top shortcomings.
I know it's not exactly the same as Duane's situation because the transfer wouldn't have the option of getting a whole 'nother year of eligibility if he sits out the rest of the year. But, as has been pointed out, the comparison between Duane and Junior is compromised by the severity of the injuries.
If Duane wants to play and is physically ready to handle the demands of playing, this is a borderline no-brainer. The timing would be excellent because of the relative ease of the schedule between the Wiscy and Creighton games.

I will say right away that I think Duane will play this year and I want Duane to play this year.
Having said that, this couldn't be a more apples to oranges comparison. Sitting the transfer doesn't add another year of eligibility for him. Also, the bolded part of your post is simply false. The transfer has been practicing for an entire year with the team, including from early November up until late December. On top of that, the transfer had at minimum a full semester of division 1 basketball experience behind him before he even transferred, which means a minimum of a year and a half of division 1 basketball experience at the point that he becomes eligible. Duane has practiced for a total of 2 practices and is just starting up in December. Missing the first month of division 1 basketball practice is a pretty big hit.

Fair enough.
Well, looks like he's at least suiting up today.
