Deonte Burton: Defining the undefined freshman
Deonte Burton was such an unknown entering his freshman season at Marquette that even the 6-foot-5 wing couldn't figure out where he fit in, defining himself as "undefined" when asked exactly what position he played. The shy Milwaukee native nervously laughed when asked about his best trait on the basketball court, wringing his hands and [...]<img alt="" border="0" src="http://stats.wordpress.com/b.gif?host=painttouches.com&blog=28348875&post=9853&subd=painttouches&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" />

Not saying that Bane won't be great, but here is a comparison of his production vs Mayo's for the first nine games of their freshmen seasons.

To be fair, Burton's only played in 8 games ;)

oops - my bad. It's a comparison for the first 8 games. I add an extra data point of zero for all players at the start of the season.
Mayo was also 20 years old as a freshman. Never really fair to compare any freshman's numbers to Mayo, who had an extra two years under his belt playing basketball. He was, essentially, a JuCo junior in terms of experience. No D1 time, true, but two years on any level is a lot.
Let's see what happens after the entire year is done....and let's see if Burton misses half of his sophomore year due to academics.

Yeah, because after his great first ten games, this is also what happened with Mayo the entirety of his freshman season.

Also Todd had Crowder and DJO. Nice support to have as a frosh.
Here's a comparison of all freshmen over the last three years. Burton doesn't exceptionally stand out besides the most recent game. Only Mayo was great early, but we've already established that wasn't accurate the entire season.

Now that I'm done providing some additional context (being a smart-aleck?), I will say that already this year JJJ (#1) and Burton (#3) have had two of the top three stats performances by freshmen over the last three years. Hope that it continues.
