I mentioned this in another thread:
Deonte was substituted out at the 5:24 mark when MU was down 51-50. At that point, he had been in the game about 7:30.
When he returned to the game at the 3:54 mark, it was tied at 53.
So when Deonte was out, Marquette actually went +1.
Deonte was the king of the "What the devil is he doing? YES!" game last night. Took some tough shots without a thought of passing. Impossible to complain when they go in, though...

True, but it's good to see someone on the team not afraid to take a shot. Whether or not Buzz should've kept him in.... I would've liked to see him keep playing to see what he can do/if he could have kept it going, but I'm no coach.
I too was in the group of "WTF, nothing else is working, let's let the freshmen try it." but was disappointed w/JJJ's production, and pleased w/Deonte's. I expected more out of Todd and Jamil as the game wore down. Of course, I hoped that Davante would be able to give a burst of energy and take over inside.
Love Deonte's willingness to take charge to help us win. Wish Jamil had the same attitude. Deonte's a winner!
Why the love for Deonte vs the vitriol for Todd when he plays the same way?

I like both Deonte and Todd. But for those who are frustrated with Todd, part of it might have to do with his 40% shooting percentage vs Deonte's 47%. And maybe there's the expectation that Todd should be closer to the top of his learning curve as a junior than Deonte is as a frosh.
Anyhow, I think both have a lot to offer this team....

It's all about those baskets he can get down low. Todd doesn't seem to finish much inside yet. I love Burton's potential under the rim, even if he is only 6'4 or 6'5.

Seriously? Have you not seen Todd play for 3 years. It looks like he's disinterested, and probably is. He doesn't play hard. Deonte plays hard.

I see your another one of those guys clearly not watching.
Todd is very interested. Just watch how much better the offense is with him on the floor.
GW? Made our run with Todd in.
Yesterday. 4-4 game. Todd comes in. Derrick quick layup. Toddy quick layup. Derrick I think? another lay up. Todd goes out. We go like 9 minutes of 1 fg and some fts with a lot of misses.
Todd back in....finish the half strong.
He opens up so much as teams actually have to guard him.

I'm not trying to argue here, I just don't understand. Are you saying the team is better with Todd in because they have to guard him vs. teams not having to guard Derrick? Or vs. teams not having to guard Jake? Because in your above example, Jake is the variable that changes, not Derrick. So, conceivably, we would be fine on the court with Derrick at PG as long as it's Todd and not Jake. Although, I've noticed in the last few games that whoever is guarding Jake is guarding very closely - I assume due to the 3.
Am I misinterpreting you?

In a way you are. I am not laying blame on anyone actually. I am just saying people who think Todd is disengaged or doesn't make a huge impact are wrong. There are times when Jake and Todd are both out there too.
Problem is as I have said many times. With our starting 5 only Jamil is a threat. Jake isn't because teams just guard him at the 3 point line early in games with no other shooting threat.
Bring in Todd, Ox or even JJJ and Jake gets better looks and opportunities because both JJJ and Todd can shoot it and Ox is a force down low. Most of Jakes 3s come later in games when hes playing with combos of Todd, Ox and Jamil...along with Derrick as well.
So I was basically just pointing out that we do happen to have good offense with Todd on the floor or most importantly with a mix of our "scorers"(ox, jamil, todd, maybe denote/JJJ?) with the quality role players who happen to start.

Thanks for the clarification. 100% agree.
I liked a lot of what I saw from Deonte. Really fun to watch. He needs to develop a lot as a player, but it is hard to argue about his raw talent levels.

Agreed. And he is not scary...he is not afraid to miss or fail which is probably why he is yanked so much.
But they need to leave him alone...and let him play. He is a threat every trip down and with the Otule and Gardner and Wilson front line that is what you need.
My lineup would be Jamil Wilson in the backcourt, with Todd and Juan and Otule and Devante in at the same time and see how that team runs for 4 minutes...I bet you will be surprised.
Buzz doesn't yank people for missing. He yanks people for taking bad shots. Mayo has greatly improved in that regard.

LOL! Yet, Buzz continues to put him on the floor. Seems plausible.
OK, that's great. Now what was the +/- when he was in? Maybe I missed it from an earlier thread but I don't remember seeing it.

Deonte is a freshman that is currently demonstrating significant potential, but lacks the experience and development to truly harness it. Todd was the same way when he was a freshman. The problem with Todd now is that he appears to be the same player he was as a freshman; plenty of ability and potential, but minimal development and the same problems playing team ball. That stated, I think Todd has played pretty unselfishly after coming back.
I was wondering the other night if Deonte is still done growing? A kid his age could still get another inch or two (i.e. STj)
Deonte looks full-grown. Maybe just the "grown ass man" nature of his physique, but I think what we see is what we get when it comes to his height. Seems like any time a basketball player has the potential to grow beyond the age of 18, everyone and their brother knows about it (like with Shayok).

I was amazed at what he was doing amongst the bigger guys on Sunday. When he came to the bench in front of me I could tell he was only 6'4" maybe 6'5", certainly much smaller than Otule and DG and looked smaller than ST to me. Yet, when he was in the game he didn't back off a bit. Since he was a lefty, that may have played games with the defenders heads a bit as they aren't used to seeing that angle. He certainly isn't shy, but made his looks.
