Title: McDermott
Post by: mileskishnish72 on November 29, 2013, 07:33:56 PM
Assuming we're playing Creighton Sunday - what's the best way to defend McDermott? I'm thinking put somebody on him and try and prevent him from getting the ball. But who?

Box and one? Triangle and two? Need somebody not foul-prone who can play D on a big. What's the answer? Suggestions?

It will beinteresting to see what Buz does.

I think Jamil Wilson would be the best man to man option. I would not do a box and one or any other gimmick defense against Creighton. Those defenses are for cupcakes with only one good player. Creighton has other people who would light it up if we played those defenses. Stick with man to man and a two three zone if needed.

Jamils length and athleticism is the best option I would think but with how Jamil has been fouling it could be a disaster with the way Doug gets to the line.

Juan is probably our best one-on-one defender with length. Could try him as the primary while doubling when possible. Alternately, the staff could just decide McDermott will get his regardless and focus the defense on stopping the other 4 guys on the floor. Might lead to a killer statline from McDermott but could also be easier to beat one guy than five.

I agree with that concern. I just don't think the secondary options are that great. I don't think Juan or STJr are ready to take him on one on one.

I think a lot of guys are going to take turns on him.   Jamil and Juan, to be sure.   A little zone.   A little Jake and Todd in denial everywhere mode.  Everybody wants to see the frosh.   Give Deonte and JJJ a couple of possessions on him.     He is going to get 20.    Accept and limit everyone else.

If Buzz does one thing really well it's shutting down teams that rely on one heavy hitter (Tu Halloway in the tournament, Kemba at home, etc.). His approach is usually to see if someone else will beat us. Sometimes they do and that's often why no-namers have huge games against us if they get hot from three. He is going to throw a ton of people at him, run deny, have help ready and make him uncomfortable with pressure. I can't wait to see how he handles it.

I love McDermott's game. He's so good at spacing and finding angles in the half court. He doesn't do it cheaply either, very impressive.

I am hoping that we don't get to that

Regardless of the winner of the Wilson v Dawson debate neither should guard Doug.
Jake and Mayo are equally bad.
I think Gardner and Otule would be owned on the outside.
JJJ would be owned on the post
That leaves Wilson, Burton, Taylor and Juan. I see it going Wilson, Juan, Zone, Taylor, Burton

No Xavier Thames of San Diego St. They are currently beating Creighton by 12.

Hopefully Derrick can hold him down and on the other end drive hard and draw fouls like he did to Carson.

This Wragge can shoot, but is a huge defensive liability.

Yeah, I don't think he sees the court as much unless MU gets up 20.

Not sure about Fisher's horses, but they need to be going at him every possession.

Yeah who ever he guards get them the ball don't care who it is. I don't see anyway he can be out there if we got Oxtule and jamil all at same time.

Creighton is explosive on O but man they suck on D

Wouldn't surprise me if Buzz has someone face guard McDermott which, by my understanding, means essentially that defender's sole responsibility is to stick on McDermott no matter what (i.e. defender does not switch or play help defense in man-to-man defensr).  Maybe Derrick Wilson or Jamil.

Right, given McDermott's capabilities it may take two...I originally thought Derrick Wilson and Jamil, but Juan and/or Jamil would be the way to go... good call...
