The 1977 Championship banner was to be thrown in the garbage once new banners were installed. Students rescued the 1977 Championship banner.
Really? Is there a story behind this? Why wouldn't they auction it off? Or cut it up into tiny squares and auction off a bunch of it?
You could get a pretty penny selling this

True story, can't say names they might get in trouble, but students who are friends of my son, and worked for MUBB Comm. have it. Son sent me the picture last night. They were ordered to throw it in the dumpster and decided to keep it. My son graduated last year and is working in Milwaukee. Still has lots of friends in school.

Got to agree with Chicos here. I mean they were selling bricks from the Lanche and there's no reason this wouldn't have equal interest.

I do not have it check post above for the story. I've been out of school for 30 yrs LOL. The students decided against selling it. They want it to remain at MU.

And not only this one, but all of the old banners. Many would like to have them, and someone is beyond stupid if they really thought to throw them out and leave a good chunk of change for the B&G fund on the table. Even find another location on campus for them, but throwing them out suggests total incompetence.

Sounds like somethin' Crean has his paws into.

Will verify this angle. I'm sure we can get him connected to this somehow!
Is this the one from the Bradley Center or from the Al? I thought the Al had a similar one, though it might been totally different in design.
This is absurd. At best this is now an urban legend. No one was "ordered" to throw a banner in a dumpster only to have it "saved." Give me a break.

From what I was told last night it is the one from Bradley, but I will check and make sure. I thought it might be the AL one, but either way I think it is a big mistake to throw either one away.

No need for urban legend. As I said son sent the picture last night is not like a friend of a friend of his. He was with the guys who have it last night. He took the picture on his phone and sent it to me. As I said I was told it was the Bradley one, but it could be the AL's. I try to make sure ask again today.
Inspired by this, I think I'll throw out my T206 Honus Wagner baseball card, too.
Is it because the banner says Warriors???

That would be interesting. Maybe they are not allowed to make money from the Warrior name would that be in the agreement?
Just talked to my son and it is confirmed that it is the Bradley Center one. I'll be awya from the computer for a while going to family Thanksgiving party.
So when will we see this bad boy in the trading post?
I sure hope they saved the 2006 CBE Classic Banner too!
That's awesome.
God bless them.
Looks like they've affixed it to the ceiling. Looks ginormous.
Tell them to get back out to that dumpster and find the Avalanche neon sign

One of my prize possessions is a 1993 'Warriors' padded bench chair from the Bradley Center. They were also thrown away because of the nickname change. Several were "rescued" at the time.

+So then the travesty of throwing away the banner would seem to be because it had Warriors! The humanity, the humanity!!
The Annex couldn't find a home for that thing? They took in Ziggy's cash register for crying out loud.
I have my doubts about this.
They've sold other banners on gomarquette.com and the annex has plenty of Warrior related things in it.
Any word on the 1970 NIT banner?

This story is nonsense. Seems to me you are trying to perpetuate the myth that Marquette wants to scrub all reference to Warriors and orders things "thrown in the dumpster." The name change was 20 years ago. This is only coming up now? I call bullshit.
I got 5 bones for the Catholic tournament banner
i find this whole story very hard to believe! just checked the calendar and it's not april 1. you can't change history! it was what it was. if this is true, it's going to really hack me off. i came to MU the year following 1977. how many schools can lay a claim to having won the national championship?? if it's because of the warrior name...why don't we just ignore (fill in the blank) didn't happen either! cheezus, would it have been better if we were the MU soldiers. that banner is a symbol of success and should never be taken down. i believe some people in this country would opt to get rid of "old glory" because they perceive it as too jingoistic?...disgusting !!-(

Nope, I just brought up the issue because it seemed senseless to me. I do not know if it had anything to do with the Warriors name or whatever. The guy who has it works with MUBB that is a fact.

Dude...calm down. They replaced it with a fresher looking one.
The issue is should they throw away the old one or simply use it elsewhere. If this story is true, and I have no reason to believe it isn't, I think it is simply wasteful. At least auction it off for a few thousand. But in the end it is simply a piece of cloth with some words sewn on. Not the end of the world.

Sounds to me like a Marquette student working for the school "borrowed the banner with no intention of returning" the piece of Marquette property.

oh, never mind then...thanks for the clarification sultan
Banners do get thrown into dumpsters. I have the Marquette Golden Eagles banner from the old Conference USA headquarters. When the league turned into a football league, moved headquarters, and schools bolted for the Big East, the banners were tossed. An employee saved the Louisville one for his dad, and the Marquette one for his dad's co-worker and friend (me).
It sits in a box until NCAA tournament time, when I pull it out and drape it over my fireplace mantle. It has the old "golden eagle" logo in the middle of it.
That is an absolutely awesome memento. Never understood schools' (not just Marquette) ability to just throw away the past.

Wow man you are bitter. You are now insinuating he stole the banner they told him to throw away LOL.
Not bitter at all. Just don't believe that Marquette would throw out a banner of such historical importance. Don't believe it at all and can't believe anyone does.

Easy to provide proof (if it exists) for Avenue Commons. Just take a picture of the banner with a made up sign in front of it, like MUScoop rules or whatever...something that shows it isn't the same picture from the Annex. No people need to be in the shot.
Just my two cents.
I'm 3,000 miles away. That was a picture taken by my son with his cell phone that he sent me via message. I'm the one who decided to post what had happened. And if they auctioned the Alaska one wouldn't it make sense that if they had the '77 one they would have auctioned by now?

He is not a student any longer, very serious about MU basketball (grew up watching it), was at the guy's apartment who is a student that works for MUBB. He did not call to tell me just messaged the photo and texted. He is now an engineer working in Milwaukee not into pranks. But believe what you want. It is like brew said in the end it is just a piece of cloth with some letters swan on it.
If proven true I'm in for $2500.
