The Big East needs DePaul to turn it around and become competitive again.  They don't need to be National Title contenders, but they should be competitive.  Oliver Purnell has not been able to recruit kids to DePaul.  They don't need the Cliff Alexanders, Jabari Parkers or Jahlil Okafors, but they should still be able to recruit some of Chicago's blue chip talent.  Chris Collins is already getting Chicago-kids at Northwestern, and he hasn't even been there a year.

Hopefully, their new arena (opening in 2016 - I believe) will attract a good head coach.  I still think it can be a very attractive job - big city, lots of history, one of the top basketball conferences, etc.

Also, you have to remember Collins was at Duke where he was already recruiting Chicago kids.

And it's Northwestern. A lot of the players know the value of the education.

Collins has laneded exactly 2 Chicago area kids at Northwestern, including ESPN # 66 Victor Law. Great start, but he's not exactly raking in the Chicago recruits. DePaul's current freshmen class includes 2 Chicago kids, including a top 100 in Billy Garrett Jr. Their current recruit class has 1 Chicago kid (Juco transfer) and they're on the final list for a couple others. They're basically on par with Northwestern. Sure, Purnell's been at DePaul longer, but he inherited an awful program and Collins was already familiar with the Chicago recruiting scene.

Now if only Purnell could coach the kids to a few wins.

Billy Garrett Jr. chose DePaul because his Dad is on staff.

Doesn't change the fact he's a Chicago guy. And Collins' has zero CPS kids.

Part of the problem is that Chicago is just not a local college sports town.  You'll find a lot more support for Big 10 teams not named Northwestern or Illinois. DePaul is filled with local students who already are invested in the Bulls, Bears, etc. and aren't adding another team to the list.  Even with a new stadium I don't think there will be support for DePaul outside of a handful of alumni.

During the tOSU/Northwestern football game, gameday noted that Northwestern ranked 10th of 12th in the B1G for the numbers of Alumni in CHICAGO!  They also noted that tOSU had the third largest alumni population in CHICAGO (did not mention who was in front of them but I'll guess the Illini and Bucky).

Question ... who is Chicago's B1G team?

If DePaul could ever build a successful program they would eventually get the support.  The just haven't been relevant in some time so of course there's not much of a following.  Consistently winning would fix all of that.

Northwestern's main undergraduate campus is also in northeast Evanston, not Chicago. When I was growing up in Chicagoland, Northwestern and the rest of the North Shore might as well have been in another state. It is socioeconomically and, in a way, geographically totally distinguishable from the rest of Chicagoland.

If you want to chuckle, do a property search of houses north of Northwestern into Wilmette. You'll be hard pressed to find one under $1 Million.

Not sure on  Chicago's Big Ten team, but everyone knows that Iowa is Chicago's Big Ten Safety School.
